Women In A Divided Church: Liberal And Conservative Catholic Women Negotiate Changing Gender Roles, Christel Manning
Women In A Divided Church: Liberal And Conservative Catholic Women Negotiate Changing Gender Roles, Christel Manning
Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
The Catholic Church in America is deeply divided, and gender issues (especially reproductive choice and women's ordination) have become a symptom of this division. This paper examines the language used by liberal and conservative Catholic women to talk about gender. It is argued that although similar divisions over gender exist within Protestantism and Judaism, Catholic women are in a unique position to confront them, Unlike conservative Protestants and Jews who have separated themselves from their more liberal counterparts by forming independent Evangelical and Orthodox denominations, conservative Catholics co-exist with liberals in the mine church. The paper shows that being forced …
The Life Stories Of A Woman From Rosebud: Names And Naming In 'Lakota Woman' And 'Ohitika Woman' (Mary Brave Woman Olguin, South Dakota), Larissa Petrillo
The Life Stories Of A Woman From Rosebud: Names And Naming In 'Lakota Woman' And 'Ohitika Woman' (Mary Brave Woman Olguin, South Dakota), Larissa Petrillo
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Lakota Woman (1991) and Ohitika Woman (1994) are the consecutive life stories of Mary Brave Woman Olguin (also known as Mary Crow Dog and Mary Brave Bird). The books portray Mary's telling of her life and its connection with Lakota history and tradition. Non-Native artist and writer, Richard Erdoes, was involved in the co-authorship of both books and recent criticism often focuses upon Erdoes' involvement in the writing process. I suggest that a reading which emphasizes Erdoes' contribution only isolates the reader from the actual subject of Lakota Woman and Ohitika Woman: Mary Brave Woman Olguin's life and the …
Romancing Visual Women: From Canon To Console, Roberta Sabbath
Romancing Visual Women: From Canon To Console, Roberta Sabbath
English Faculty Research
This dissertation juxtaposes the romantic modal treatment of powerful, admired women which canonical male authors and feminist authors and critics construct with those constructed by contemporary women for the visual mass media of video, broadcast television, and computer. The discourse of the former produces the figure of a fragmented woman who is rare, supernatural, marginalized, and impossible. The discourse of the latter produces the figure of a psychologized woman who is typical, natural, mainstream, and possible. To examine the discourse of impossibility, I use three canonical works: Augustine's Confessions; Chretien de Troyes' Perceval; and Dante's Divine Comedy. I also survey …

Manufacturing Concern: Worthy And Unworthy Victims. Headline Coverage Of Male And Female Victims Of Violence In Canadian Daily Newspapers, 1989 To 1992, James William Boyce
Manufacturing Concern: Worthy And Unworthy Victims. Headline Coverage Of Male And Female Victims Of Violence In Canadian Daily Newspapers, 1989 To 1992, James William Boyce
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This thesis examines the portrayal of male and female victims of violence in the headlines of seven Canadian daily newspapers between 1989 and 1992. Headlines were gathered from The Canadian Newspaper Index. Women's and men's victimization was found to receive different types and amounts of coverage. This coverage is inconsistent with known rates of violence against women and men, and I suggest three reasons for the disparities. I conclude by considering the possible consequences such coverage has for public perceptions and public policy.

Going By The Moon And The Stars: Stories Of Two Russian Mennonite Women, Pamela E. Klassen
Going By The Moon And The Stars: Stories Of Two Russian Mennonite Women, Pamela E. Klassen
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The stories of women's religious lives are essential to understanding religion. This thesis records and interprets two Russian Mennonite women's religious lives, using methods of feminist ethnography. The first chapter is a video which presents Agatha Janzen and Katja Enns talking about their childhoods in the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 305, their flight to Germany during World War ll, and their subsequent emigration and life in Canada. Chapter 2 tells and interprets Agatha's and Katja's experiences of marriage during the war, and the effect of their status as widow (Agatha) and single mother (Katja) upon their entry into …

It is an honor for me to have been asked to be a part of this roundtable
discussion. I join Francis Fiorenza in recognizing the enormous (that is,
radical, disturbing) contributions that feminist scholarship (in all of its variety)
has made to religious studies. I take special delight in having the
opportunity to reflect upon the influence of feminist scholarship upon biblical
studies and upon my own scholarly development and work.

Age, Gender, And Religious Differences In Moral Perspective, Samuel L. Clay
Age, Gender, And Religious Differences In Moral Perspective, Samuel L. Clay
Theses and Dissertations
An investigation was conducted to see if age and gender are related to a preference for a caring versus a justice morality. The World View Questionnaire with 40 word pairs was used to measure a preference for a caring morality. It was found that there was a significant gender difference in the caring score, with the females scoring higher than the males. There also was a significant religious difference in the caring score with religious and especially Mormon subjects scoring higher than non-religious subjects. There was not, however, a significant age difference as was predicted.
Gender And The Search For Identity In Gwendolyn Macewan’S Julian And Noman Stories, Anne Marie Martin
Gender And The Search For Identity In Gwendolyn Macewan’S Julian And Noman Stories, Anne Marie Martin
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This thesis looks at the theme of gender and the search for identity in three fictional works of Canadian poet and novelist Gwendolyn MacEwen. The works considered are her first novel Julian the Magician (1963) and her two collections of short stories Noman (1972) and Noman’s Land (1985).
The thesis examines the way self-identity is characterized and considers the way gender is presented in relation to the self. The work shows the development of MacEwen’s idea of self from a creative eternal force equivalent to the Christ image in Julian the Magician to an eternal force that finds its expression …
Feminist Ritual Healing, Transformation And Empowerment, Eileen R. Ormond
Feminist Ritual Healing, Transformation And Empowerment, Eileen R. Ormond
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
A number of contemporary Western feminists are re-defining their spiritual beliefs and creating ritual practices to reinforce feminine values in their lives. Advocates of feminist spirituality believe that the personal and spiritual dimensions of women’s lives are interrelated. The experience of transcendence and unity is often preceded by personal healing and empowerment for many women. The creation of alternative women’s rituals, a dynamic force in contemporary feminism, is well illustrated in the world of Diane Mariechild. One purpose of this work is to interpret Mariechild’s rituals from a feminist and psychological perspective and to suggest that feminist ritual may function …
Invisible Presences: Virginia Woolf And Biography, Stephanie Kirkwood Walker
Invisible Presences: Virginia Woolf And Biography, Stephanie Kirkwood Walker
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The principal concerns of this thesis are the connections that Virginia Woolf made between writing, revelation, women and biography, set in the historical and literary contexts of her life in England from the late nineteenth century to her death in 1941. Her vision of biographical form, language and the biographical self is assessed within the environment established by her father, her Victorian childhood and education, Bloomsbury attitudes and a spirituality shaped by her Anglican heritage and her experiences of gender. My contention is that her novelist’s sense of the relationship between fact and fiction, her critical analysis of the significance …

A Weave Of Women In The Context Of Contemporary Feminism And Traditional Judaism, Patricia J. Bush
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
In this thesis I discuss E.M. Broner’s novel A Weave of Women and show how she uses innovative rituals of status elevation and status reversal to focus her reader’s attention on the problems associated with the patriarchal structures of traditional Judaism, e.g., racism and religious chauvinism. In Part One I provide a description of contemporary feminist rituals to set Broner’s novel into context. Part Two is an exposition of the text of her novel comparing its feminist rites to various Jewish prayer books and descriptions of traditional Jewish rituals. In my conclusion I offer a critique of the novel. I …

Mothers And Daughters, Marianne Hirsch
Mothers And Daughters, Marianne Hirsch
Dartmouth Scholarship
In 1976 Adrienne Rich alerted us to the silence that has surrounded the most formative relationship in the life of every woman, the relationship between daughter and mother: "The cathexis between mother and daughter-essential, distorted, misused-is the great unwritten story. Probably there is nothing in human nature more resonant with charges than the flow of energy between two biologically alike bodies, one of which has lain in amniotic bliss inside the other, one of which has labored to give birth to the other."1 Since Rich demonstrated the absence of the mother-daughter relationship from theology, art, sociology, and psychoanalysis, and its …

FROM THE NATIONAL OFFICE
By Elaine Reuben
At the opening session of the 1980 NWSA Convention, Dale Spender urged U.S. feminist educators to educate themselves beyond national boundaries. She called for an extension of our consciousness-raising efforts to understand and appreciate differences within an international feminist movement: for our own sakes, as well as for our sisters around the globe.
In the Spring Newsletter editorial, Florence Howe noted the large questions and hard choices posed by a growing awareness of international developments in women's studies. "Should we be institution-building in the U.S. or helping, advising, missionizing, urging—and learning from—women's studies …
Feminist Publishing In Israel, Marcia Freedman
Feminist Publishing In Israel, Marcia Freedman
Women's Studies Quarterly
Israel has a population of 3½ million people who, for the most part, speak, read, and write an ancient, patriarchal language recently revived and fortified by an infusion of new terms and even some new syntactic constructs. The result of this self-imposition of a parochial language upon a people who, as a people, had been at home in at least one European language as well as Yiddish and Ladino, was to transform the People of the Book into a rather ill-informed and culturally isolated society. The few channels of information from the West that do existmainly films and books-are institutionally …

"Liquor, the slaying of women and Shudras ... are all minor offences," according to Manu, the Hindu lawgiver. "To rape is human," asserts Mr. Joshi, Chief Minister of the province of Madhya Pradesh.
V. Meera calls on these voices of tradition to open her article, "Prisoners of Inequality: Sexual Abuse of Dalit Women," in an excellent new feminist bimonthly magazine called Manushi: A Journal about Women and Society. Manushi, whose title means "woman" in Hindi, first appeared in January 1979, as the pioneer publication of its kind in India. It is produced in Delhi by an independent feminist collective …

A Note On Jewish Women's Studies In The United States, S. F.
Women's Studies Quarterly
As Israeli feminists attempt to connect with the women's movement outside Israel, Jewish feminists in the United States are attempting to connect with them and with the Jewish heritage both groups share. Due to the peculiarities inherent in that heritage, "Jewish Women's Studies" in the United States is as much in its infancy as feminist publishing in Israel. This past year, however, at the First Annual NWSA Convention, a session on Jewish Women's Studies: Theory and Practice took place, as well as a roundtable discussion on Feminism and Judaism, and a spontaneously organized Shabbat service that was inspiring for those …

Report From The February 4/1/1979 Coordinating Council Meeting, Elizabeth Baer
Women's Studies Quarterly
As regional and caucus representatives gathered for the opening session of the semiannual NWSA Coordinating Council meeting on the College Park campus of the University of Maryland on February 15, they were asked to respond to two questions in introducing themselves: "What is your vision of the future of NWSA?" and "Have you and/or your program paid your 1979 dues?" Juxtaposed, the questions reflected the experience of the organization in its first two years—encompassing the idealism of NWSA's founding and the pragmatic exigencies of supporting national organization. The questions, asked and answered on Susan B. Anthony's birthday, began a meeting …

In a women's college, it seems to us, it is unnecessary, and in fact redundant, to have a Women's Studies Program. The Faculty Institute on the Education of Women, September 1-2, 1971, sensitized all those responsible for the educational process to the particular needs, interests, socialization effects which women experience.

The following notes, prepared by J. J. Wilson, reflect the Women's Studies Program at Sonoma State College, Rohnert Park, Calif. 94928. In our Women's Biography course one afternoon, discussion turned to the kinds of questions we wanted biographies of women to answer—for example, what do women fear most? We decided to begin immediately by asking those questions of ourselves. For twenty minutes the whole class wrote. A loving sister, not ashamed to admit to her secretarial skills, took these papers home and typed them onto dittos; someone else ran them off; others collated them. We could then begin to answer …

Progress on a national roster of women and minorities—that "national directory of women scholars" we have been talking about in women's groups within our various professional associations for close to two years now—is "standing still," according to Janet Brown, director of the new Office of Opportunities in Science at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). The American Council on Education has written a proposal for an Equal Opportunity Register—a national directory of women and minorities in higher education—and is seeking funding (one estimate tags the cost at three-quarters of a million dollars), but to date no funding …
