Broadcast History Gaps When Archival Material Exists: Inserting Peg Lynch And Ethel And Albert Into Sitcom History, Lauren Bratslavsky
Broadcast History Gaps When Archival Material Exists: Inserting Peg Lynch And Ethel And Albert Into Sitcom History, Lauren Bratslavsky
Journal of 20th Century Media History
Lucy and Desi. Burns and Allen. Ozzie and Harriet. Ethel and Albert? The first three television couples tend to be the familiar husband-wife pairs that typify American 1950s sitcoms. These characters and their namesake programs, along with the Andersons in Father Knows Best and the Cleavers in Leave it to Beaver, are credited as templates for the domestic sitcom genre, where the narrative logic oscillates between morality lessons and outlandish plots to escape domestic life. When we study or reminisce about 1950s television, Ethel and Albert and their namesake program do not readily come to mind. However, the popularity …

Undergraduate Experiences Of Black Women At Pwi Campuses, Nilsa Laine
Honors Projects in History, Literature, and the Arts
Black women in modern-day American society face various forms of oppression as a result of misogynoir, the disliking of or bias against black women. This research will answer the question: are there commonalities between Black women in their undergraduate experiences at PWI campuses? Qualitative research will be conducted with methodology including archival research and interviews to collect data. Intersectionality theory, Invisibility theory, and Black feminist thought/theory will be used as …

The Goose
This essay uses queer mycologies to advocate for radical rest in the face of anti-queer organizing and hate. The author explains how a burnout diagnosis forced her out of the office and into the woods with her dog. Learning to walk the dog on a leash precipitated a deep queer kinship with the dog, mushrooms, and slide molds in the Acadian forest.

From Empowerment Movement To Hijacked Hashtag: A Thematic Analysis Of #Shoutyourabortion, Sidney R. Reynen
LSU Master's Theses
This study delves into the digital landscape of the contentious abortion debate, focusing on the use and hijacking of the Shout Your Abortion hashtag. Drawing parallels to previous research on digital feminism, hashtag activism, and hashtag hijacking, this study further expands such literature by revealing shifts in anti-abortion rhetoric and strategies post-Dobbs. I identified seven themes within the supportive discourse: abortion narratives, pro-choice and other feminist rhetoric, calls to action, feminist art and shareables, reproductive health information and resources, positive-to-neutral mentions of the movement, and engagements with anti-abortion users. Within the hijacked posts, I identified five themes: Shout …

Graphic Identities: Creating Places For Queer Belonging Through Comics, Victoria Payne
Graphic Identities: Creating Places For Queer Belonging Through Comics, Victoria Payne
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis explores how queer comics create spaces and places of belonging for the LGBTQIA+ community. Queer comics occupy a complex and liminal space. This thesis considers three different types of comics commonly theorized as separate: the embodied, digital, and the literary. It is the tension between the physical nature paired with the intangible nature of the worlds created in these stories that makes them a perfect place for building spaces that are queer, safe, and interactive for queer and non-queer readers alike. This is the case with print comics and graphic novels, as well as digital comics and webcomics. …
Woman, Life, Freedom, And The Question Of Multiculturalism In Iranian Studies, Yalda N. Hamidi
Woman, Life, Freedom, And The Question Of Multiculturalism In Iranian Studies, Yalda N. Hamidi
Gender and Women's Studies Department Publications
The vast uprisings across Iranian cities in the fall of 2022 caught many of Iranian studies scholars and academic feminists in the diaspora off guard. My first confrontation was with trauma. Like many others, I worried about the lives and safety of my loved ones, political dissidents and prisoners from different ethnic backgrounds, feminists and queer activists on the ground, and, of course, the millennials and Gen Z, who unexpectedly emerged as the new revolutionaries. However, with the first wave of emotional encounters settled, the uprising unlocked another level of cognitive puzzlement critical to my academic life. I struggled to …

The Bible And Normative Experiences Of Queer Marriage In The United States: The Interconnected Influences Of Scripture, Law, And Queer Context, Ross H. Potter Jr.
Theses
This thesis explores the relational influences between scripture, law, and queer context as they drive understandings of queer marriage norms in the United States. Emphasis is placed on the role that particular scriptures play in teasing out meaning from the various lived experiences of queer communities over the last century. These lived experiences, in turn, have influenced both approaches to scriptural interpretation and religious and legal norms surrounding the acceptance of queer people and their marriages within society. By utilizing queer biblical interpretation in dialogue with these influential biblical passages and legal and social norms that have developed in the …

Mothers In Law: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Mothers In Law School, Sarah M. Jordon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mothers are an increasing student population in higher education but an extensively under-researched population. While research examining motherhood is limited, the dearth of studies examining motherhood in higher education is especially limited, with even less available in the legal field and the institutions that provide legal education. This study examined how mothers in law school made meaning of their experiences utilizing a postmodernist epistemological framework, postmodernism and performance as a theoretical framework, and critical discourse analysis as a methodology. Data collection took place over the 2022-2023 academic year. Eight mothers participated in this qualitative study representing a range of ability …

The Role Of Pregnant Women’S Attachment Relationships In Predicting Maternal Adjustment During Pregnancy, Mahshid Zamani, Parisa Sadat Seyed Mousavi, Ali Reza-Pezhman
Journal of International Women's Studies
Maternal adjustment is a woman’s response to the challenges she experiences from the moment pregnancy is discovered until the baby is born. This adjustment is achieved gradually during pregnancy and has considerable importance. Studies in the field of maternal adjustment have mainly focused on the importance of this factor in maternal postpartum experience, whereas less attention has been paid to the identification of predictors of this adjustment in pregnant women. The aim of this study was to explain the role of pregnant women’s attachment relationships in predicting maternal adjustment during pregnancy. The methodology was correlational, and the statistical population consisted …

“I’M Different From You But Very Much Like You”: Religious Women Activists And Their Father Figures, Ayelet Makaros, Edith Blit-Cohen
Journal of International Women's Studies
This study examined activist women in religious society in Israel in order to gain in-depth insights into their lived experience and coping strategies in advocating for change in their society. The article is based on thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with fourteen such women. Contrary to the expectation that there would be a dominant mother figure influencing the activists’ lives, the findings show that the influence of mothers was marginal and even an impeding factor, while father figures were the most significant in these women’s childhood and development into activists. All religious activists perceived their fathers as highly influential, in …

Older Women As Active Online Agents: Diversifying Cultural Conceptions Of “Grannies” Through Social Media, Hanna Varjakoski
Journal of International Women's Studies
With the advent of social media, the media environment has become more participatory for its users, making it possible for older adults to produce content for social media and be agential in online spaces. This article observes a group of older women known as Activist Grannies (Aktivistimummot in Finnish) and 60+ Finnish women bloggers who identify as “grannies” to discover what kind of agency social media potentially enables for older women. In addition, this article explores the cultural knowledge produced by older women’s self-representations as activist grannies and “granny bloggers.” I demonstrate that social media offers a space to …
Triumphant Or Trapped Pakistani Women? A Feminist Critique Of Mueenuddin’S “Nawabdin Electrician” And Haq’S Song “Chamkeeli”, Amna Khan
Journal of International Women's Studies
In patriarchal societies, women are traditionally subjugated and suppressed in one way or another. Men are privileged and kept at the center. They speak, express, and dream while benefiting from the autonomy provided to them by the phallogocentric system. By contrast, women are marginalized. Patriarchal writers define women as weak, fragile, helpless, docile, submissive, and emotional. However, this paper reveals that in Daniyal Mueenuddin’s “Nawabdin Electrician” and Abrar-ul-Haq’s song “Chamkeeli,” regardless of a change in times and “gender performativity,” Pakistani male writers continue to stigmatize women. This study shows that although gender roles are changing, women remain subjugated. My paper …
