The Dildo Question: When Sex Positivity And Patriarchy Clash In The Classroom, Kate Maddalena
Feminist Pedagogy
This Critical Commentary describes how sex positivity can be a Trojan Horse for uncritical and toxic behavior in the classroom and suggests a pedagogical approach to help avoid the co-opting of sex positive ideologies for patriarchal power.

Lessons From A First Year Seminar: Teaching “Mean Girls” To Become “Nasty Women”, Elif S. Armbruster Phd
Feminist Pedagogy
This essay explores what happened in a First Year Seminar on "Nasty Women in American Literature" when a group of students, instead of embracing the strength and independence that the phrase "nasty woman" came to embody, turned into a group of "mean girls"--led by a "queen bee"--and dominated the course through alliance-building, gossip, and distraction. The Suffolk University English professor teaching the course explains the challenging environment that ensured and what she learned from the experience, enabling her to make important changes in her teaching of the course the following semester.

The purpose of this article is to critically examine the story of the number 41 as a queer signifier in Mexican culture from a decolonial perspective, taking into account archival records in the development of hegemonic masculinity in the 20th century. An examination of hegemonic masculinity and homophobia of early 20th century Mexico is provided by reviewing colonial accounts of indigenous sexuality, as well as uncovering the hidden stories of the corrido/ballad of El Baile de los 41 Maricones. The corrido was used as satire to ridicule the homosexual practices by the bourgeoisie, creating a rift between social classes, and …

Background Transgender men (TGM) are underrepresented in genital microbiome research. Our prospective study in Birmingham, AL investigated genital microbiota changes over time in TGM initiating testosterone, including the development of incident bacterial vaginosis (iBV). Here, we present lessons learned from recruitment challenges encountered during the conduct of this study. Methods Inclusion criteria were assigned female sex at birth, TGM or non-binary identity, age ≥18 years, interested in injectable testosterone but willing to wait 7 days after enrollment before starting, and engaged with a testosterone-prescribing provider. Exclusion criteria were recent antibiotic use, HIV/STI infection, current vaginal infection, pregnancy, or past 6 …

Finding And Filling The Inkwell: Gathering, Cultivating And Writing In An Intersectional Feminist Scholarly Community, Danika Medak-Saltzman
Gatherings
The author describes feminist writing collectivities inspired by Michelle Boyd's InkWell Academic Writing Retreats. The collectivities are an example of feminist placemaking where members relish each other’s career or personal wins, and triage writing roadblocks, all while nurturing and reinforcing individual writing endeavors and sustaining writing practices.
Black Feminine Performance Meets Feminist Placemaking, Cassandra Scherr
Black Feminine Performance Meets Feminist Placemaking, Cassandra Scherr
Gatherings
From the clothing we adorn ourselves with to the playful role of our eyes or the careful words of accusation, we all engage in performances. In an ideal world, these performances would reflect or share our authentic selves. But in spaces burdened by social hierarchies and power dynamics for many BIPOC people, and particularly for black women, these personal performances become a necessary self-protective tool. This raises the question of how we effectively engage in feminist placemaking when we know that some people participating in these places are engaging in a self-protective performance. This essay will explore one answer to …

Where Is The Place For Muslim Feminists? Placemaking In The Ruptures Of The North American Academy, Wafaa Hasan, Besan Jaber, Nadiya N. Ali, Asmaa Malik, Farha Ternikar
Gatherings
This reflection explores both solidarities and ruptures in feminist placemaking at the National Women's Studies Association 2023 soon after October 7. As Palestine had become a source of tension and critical reflection in many feminist spaces, this collective of Muslim feminist scholars also found it to be a source of transnational and intersectional solidarity work. This piece is written by tenured and untenured Palestinian, South Asian and Black Muslim feminist scholars as a model of feminist praxis challenging individual knowledge-making and redefining collective care.
Feminist Community-Building In Transient Places, Lisa J. Cunningham
Feminist Community-Building In Transient Places, Lisa J. Cunningham
Gatherings
Cunningham discusses mentoring students to co-create intersectional and action-oriented feminist communities within and beyond the college campus. Using both a regional and national conference as brief case studies, she examines attempts at silencing student voices in purportedly inclusive places and exemplifies the necessity of modeling speaking out in response to oppression. Through a politics of refusal, she argues that a central part of her role as a Gender and Sexuality Studies professor is to help students develop their ability to respond to marginalization wherever they find it, even and especially when it exists in places that claim to be feminist …

Introducing Volume 1 Of Gatherings: Lessons In Feminist Placemaking In The Present Time, Jill Swiencicki
Gatherings
Placemaking has been a central feature of feminist agency and action. In Volume 1 of Gatherings, scholars identify such horizons of potential, and we see new concepts emerge in these reflections–terms like vulnerability, rupture, performance, vigilance, humility, violence, care, listening, and virtual/digital modes of presence. The contributors in this volume attend to the simultaneity of the questions that make up feminist placemaking.

Japan’S “Big Lie": The Negation Of Oral Testimony Of Sexual Violence, Robert O'Mochain, Yuki Ueno
Japan’S “Big Lie": The Negation Of Oral Testimony Of Sexual Violence, Robert O'Mochain, Yuki Ueno
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
In recent years, powerful actors in Japan’s political elite have consistently denied the oral testimony of so-called “comfort women.” The denial of this and related historical crimes is made in the service of a claim we denote here as the “big lie.” This is the erroneous assertion that the Asia-Pacific War was a straightforward war of liberation by the Japanese Imperial Army, inspired by a blameless Emperor and carried out by morally exemplary military forces. This denial of historical realities, especially those related to “comfort women,” has constituted a contributory factor for a pattern of denial regarding all historical crimes. …

Everything And Nothing: Exploring The Connection Between Gender Microaggressions In The Family Of Origin And Intimate Adult Relationships, Stephanie Dizenzo-Priestley
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Experiences with gender microaggressions have been shown to negatively impact mental health and self-esteem in women. Cisgender women are faced with pervasive gender microaggressions throughout life, including within their homes and families. This study sought to explore cisgender women’s experiences with gender microaggressions within two critical family systems, the family of origin and intimate adult relationships. Utilizing Postmodern Feminist Theory and Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, three overarching themes were identified related to how cisgender women experience and make meaning of gender microaggressions: 1) Rigid Roles and Expectations for Women; 2) Impact of Power Dynamics; and 3) Identifying Pathways to Lasting Change. …
Understanding The Livelihood Diversification Of Arkansas Women Involved In Agricultural Production, Oluwatoyin Elizabeth Abati
Understanding The Livelihood Diversification Of Arkansas Women Involved In Agricultural Production, Oluwatoyin Elizabeth Abati
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Agriculture as a livelihood activity entails significant risks and uncertainties, which expose agricultural households to a low standard of living, poverty, and a lowering of their food security status. Women's responsibilities in agriculture are expanding and becoming more critical, and farm women are now broadening their duties to include roles off-farm. More research is needed in Arkansas about agricultural women's roles, challenges, and essential job characteristics. Using a quantitative survey, this research aimed to provide a resource on how women involved in agricultural production diversify their livelihoods. Participants were asked to describe their livelihood diversification by identifying their activities on …

“Koláče In The Blogosphere: Cultivating Food Expertise Through Domesticity, Femininity, And Ethnicity”, Cathryn Janka
Institute for the Humanities Master's Papers, Projects, and Capstones
Koláče in the Blogosphere is an analysis of food blogs to determine how female food bloggers cultivate food expertise through domesticity, femininity, and ethnicity. Their readership are predominately the adult children and grandchildren of immigrants seeking rediscovery of lost recipes or the completion of partial recipes of loved ones that have passed on. The bloggers are typically recent immigrants themselves or native writers in their home countries sharing recipes with those seeking rediscovery. Gender and food studies scholars have studied women as guardians of domesticity, ethnicity, the world of ethnic cuisine, and food authenticity along with the matrilineal transmission of …

Other Faculty Research and Publications
This article explores two literary texts written by two Chilean trans or non-binary individuals in which the processes of constructing and subjectivizing the Self are framed by their material and symbolic conditions of existence, differentiated by class, the type of work (labor) performed, and the political and aesthetic expectations of their own writing project. In the case of Monalisa Ojeda, the autofiction narrative (journal) responds to the reality of travesti/trans migrant, sex-working communities in 1990s NYC, while in the case of Ariel Florencia Richards, the novel explores the complex relationships between an upper middle class mother and her trans daughter …

Praying To Tiktok, Seeking The Self: How Rhetoric Reveals And Conceals The World’S Most Powerful Guru Of The Postindustrial Age, Samantha L. Gillespie-Hoffman
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Imagine a world where the most powerful leader is a wellness guru that runs an elaborate church with millions of followers. The guru is so powerful that everyone believes they can read minds and make ordinary people rich and famous. The guru controls forms of communication, media channels, consumer tastes, and what people eat, drink, say, and even think. What if this guru was not human but actually an algorithm? Does this sound like the plot of a science fiction novel? I argue that this scenario is closer to reality than most will admit. In this project, readers encounter a …

Razorblade Swing: Sympathy For The Dead, Game Design Document, Matthew Sparksman
Postgraduate
Sydney of the late 20s was a world of dark, crisp shadows and flashing blades. The war has recently ended, and there is a hunger, a mania, to forget and bury the ghosts and spirits. But the dead, and things inhuman, do not like to be forgotten.
Razorblade Swing is a tabletop roleplaying game that seeks to explore this world through the eyes of street-level, everyday, vulnerable people, particularly women. The main conceit is that the Razor Wars were the product of the ghosts and spirits of war. Those who come back often deal with this through addiction, vice and …

Animation mirrors society, reflecting its values, beliefs and challenges, becoming a tool to enable cultural improvement by recognising diversity and critiquing socio-political issues. Inspired by traditional Eastern European animation, renowned for its surrealism and socio-political narratives, this research aims to expand the medium’s potential. Directors like Jan Svankmajer and Jiri Trnka created masterpieces based on folklore, mythology and political commentary. This research aims to intertwine and shape animated works' content and context by honouring this tradition.
The research explores the multifaceted role of contemporary animation, which embeds Eastern European stylistic techniques to disrupt popular story structures and shape social discourse. …

This dissertation examines the importance of Online allyship through a newly coined term in Memetics and Mis- and Disinformation: “Counter-Memeship.” This work combines previous contributing works on “memes,” “counter-memes,” “counter-stories,” and “allyship” through the lens of feminist, white, and communication theories. Internet memes and studies are explored by looking at how Online participants in internet spaces interact with each other in modern-day protests in memetic ways. The researcher utilizes descriptive and exploratory methods to articulate better how internet memes work between 2015 and 2024. The primary purpose of this research is to see whether Online protests can be considered non-performative …
How Housing Insecurity And Welfare Systems Retraumatize Women In Southern California, Yesika Menera
How Housing Insecurity And Welfare Systems Retraumatize Women In Southern California, Yesika Menera
McNair Summer Research Program
Studies show that individuals experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity also experience trauma and mental illnesses. Despite this evidence, many resources provided through state welfare services seldom allocate sufficient funds and personnel to help address mental health. This study investigates the relationship between housing insecurity and trauma for adult women who have tried to access assistance throughout Southern California. To do this, I conducted in-depth interviews and DSM-5 questionnaires with twenty-six women during the summer of 2023 and 2024 via Zoom. My findings show that adult women who have experienced homelessness and housing insecurity in Southern California were more susceptible to …

Employing Reflexivity In Sexuality Socialisation Research: A Methodological Contribution From Psychosocial Studies, Lisa Saville Young Dr, Yanela Ndabula Ms, Catriona Ida Macleod Prof
The Qualitative Report
In this paper, we describe and demonstrate the value of adopting a psychosocial methodology to explore unique sexual socialisation experiences emphasising the role of reflexivity. Psychosocial methodology emerges from Psychosocial Studies, a “transdisciplinary” area interested in phenomena from “both” a social and personal perspective and in this paper is employed to investigate how sexual socialisation is shaped by psychological processes “and” social relations, and how these can be “thought together” (Frosh & Vyrgioti, 2022). Psychosocial data analytic strategies involve applying narrative and discursive psychology alongside psychoanalytic concepts to understand the possible reasons for a participant’s investment in particular discourses, understanding …
Queer Coding And Representation: The Motion Picture Production Code And Its Impact On The Lgbtq Community, Amber Leech
Queer Coding And Representation: The Motion Picture Production Code And Its Impact On The Lgbtq Community, Amber Leech
English and Creative Writing Summer Fellows
The Motion Picture Production Code was a set of guidelines for films imposed between 1934 and 1968 that prevented them from depicting immoral themes such as profanity, blasphemy, and glorification of criminal activity. While homosexuality was never explicitly mentioned, it was banned in films through a rule prohibiting the depiction of sex perversion. This resulted in many films using a technique called queer coding in which they could imply that a character was queer without alerting the Production Code Administration. Because queer characters could not be depicted without glamorizing homosexuality, however, many of these characters were villains, died in the …

Social Media As A Coping Strategy For Indonesian Migrant Mothers In Hong Kong To Maintain Mothering Roles, Irfan Wahyudi, Panizza Allmark
Journal of International Women's Studies
In Hong Kong, Indonesian migrant domestic workers (IMDWs) are forced to leave behind young children in their home country. Often spending the majority of their time in their employer’s households, they must manage their limited personal time to maintain connections with their families back home. Many women IMDWs try to overcome distance limitations by performing transnational mothering using any available media to reach their children and to manage and witness their development. By using communication tools such as Internet-mediated calls for distance nurturing, they are able to keep up with their children’s lives and monitor day-to-day developments. This research examines …

Marginalization And Environmental Risk: Women’S Roles In Making Plastic Woven Bags In Indonesia, Salsabila Damayanti, Siti Mas’Udah, Asia Ashfaq, Sudarso, Herdiyanti, Citra Asmara Indra, Merlia Indah Prastiwi
Journal of International Women's Studies
The plastic woven bag has become a symbolic representation of Indonesian women’s identity since the trend increased in 2021. The plastic woven bag represents femininity and the image of women as a result of socio-cultural construction. The activity of weaving paradoxically puts women in both a central and a marginal role. The weaving industry is characterized by an increasing number of platforms for women to generate income and improve their economic welfare. Nevertheless, women are still faced with patriarchal domination, because the demands of their domestic role limit their ability to move freely in public space. Therefore, their status as …

Domestic violence is a serious social problem, and the number of domestic violence cases are increasing each year in Indonesia. This study aims to explore marital discord and types and triggers of domestic violence experienced by career women who worked from home during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2021). In this qualitative research, the researchers interviewed professional working women who experienced domestic violence perpetrated by their husbands in East Java. This study shows that marital discord escalated into domestic violence due to complications experienced when they were staying at home because of the lockdown. Daily engagement between husbands and wives had an …
