The Disabling Nature Of The Hiv / Aids Discourse Among Hbcu Students: How Postcolonial Racial Identities And Gender Expectations Influence Hiv Prevention Attitudes And Sexual Risk-Taking, Bruce H. Wade
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
This analysis reveals how some African American college students respond to the discourse on HIV / AIDS as a social disability. The methodology includes surveys (n = 217), focus groups and interviews with convenience samples of students attending a consortium of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the U.S. The findings show that the perceived risk of HIV is high in this community, that nearly half of students use condoms inconsistently even though they are well aware of the risks of unprotected sex and their levels of HIV / AIDS knowledge are high. Social stigma, gender role expectations, an …

(Re)Shaping “Homes” In Kashmir: The Impact Of War On Kashmiri Pandit Women’S Lives In The Name Of Nation, Christine Show
(Re)Shaping “Homes” In Kashmir: The Impact Of War On Kashmiri Pandit Women’S Lives In The Name Of Nation, Christine Show
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
The state of Kashmir is positioned betweenIndia,PakistanandChina. The region has been the site of four wars since 1947 in the name of claiming a nation. There is an ongoing ethnic and religious battle betweenIndia(Hindu majority) andPakistan(Muslim majority) over who can claim the state ofKashmir. As part of this battle, the people ofKashmirhave been deeply affected as targets of militancy. In particular, Kashmiri Pandit women, those who are religiously rooted as Hindus, have seen violence and trauma as Muslim militant forces have invaded women’s “homes” inside the state and within their physical “homes” to inflict violence in the name of the …
Journalists In Feminist Clothing: Men And Women Reporting Afghan Women During Operation Enduring Freedom, 2001, Corinne Fowler
Journalists In Feminist Clothing: Men And Women Reporting Afghan Women During Operation Enduring Freedom, 2001, Corinne Fowler
Journal of International Women's Studies
The following discussion is based on an extensive survey of UK mainstream television news reports broadcast between September and December 2001 during the military attacks on Afghanistan, known as Operation Enduring Freedom. Also conducted was a survey of British radio and print media published and produced within the specified period. I argue that the 2001 news media coverage of Afghanistan was an important precursor to current debates about Muslim women in Europe and the United States since it highlights many of the contradictions and hypocrisies housed within western public discourses on women’s rights. Detailing numerous examples, I contend that the …

Meridians: Feminism, Race, Transnationalism
When the renowned Egyptian physician-psychiatrist, writer, and activist Nawal el Saadawi first told me of her plans to hold a conference entitled "Women, Creativity, and Dissidence" in Cairo, Egypt, in 2005, I immediately envisioned devoting a special issue to the proceedings. At the time, Dr. el Saadawi—whom I had first met some years before as a board member of Meridians-was a visiting Neilson Professor at Smith, and I eagerly anticipated receiving the papers from the conference that would be coedited by both she and Dr. Obioma Nnaemeka...

Ain’T I A Woman? Revisiting Intersectionality, Avtar Brah, Ann Phoenix
Ain’T I A Woman? Revisiting Intersectionality, Avtar Brah, Ann Phoenix
Journal of International Women's Studies
In the context of the second Gulf war and US and the British occupation of Iraq, many ‘old’ debates about the category ‘woman’ have assumed a new critical urgency. This paper revisits debates on intersectionality in order to show that they can shed new light on how we might approach some current issues. It first discusses the 19th century contestations among feminists involved in anti-slavery struggles and campaigns for women’s suffrage. The second part of the paper uses autobiography and empirical studies to demonstrate that social class (and its intersections with gender and ‘race’ or sexuality) are simultaneously subjective, structural …
