Seasonality Of Precipitation In The Southwestern United States During The Late Pleistocene Inferred From Stable Isotopes In Herbivore Tooth Enamel, Matthew J. Kohn, Kathleen B. Springer, Jeffrey S. Pigati, Linda M. Reynard, Amanda E. Drewicz, Justin Crevier, Eric Scott
Seasonality Of Precipitation In The Southwestern United States During The Late Pleistocene Inferred From Stable Isotopes In Herbivore Tooth Enamel, Matthew J. Kohn, Kathleen B. Springer, Jeffrey S. Pigati, Linda M. Reynard, Amanda E. Drewicz, Justin Crevier, Eric Scott
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The late Pleistocene was a climatically dynamic period, with abrupt shifts between cool-wet and warmdry conditions. Increased effective precipitation supported large pluvial lakes and long-lived spring ecosystems in valleys and basins throughout the western and southwestern U.S., but the source and seasonality of the increased precipitation are debated. Increases in the proportions of C4/(C4+ C3) grasses in the diets of large grazers have been ascribed both to increases in summer precipitation and lower atmospheric CO2 levels. Here we present stable carbon and oxygen isotope data from tooth enamel of late Pleistocene herbivores recovered …

Innovative Measure On Achieving Common Prosperity: Carbon Transfer Payment, Peili Lu, Lanling Peng, Jiaqi Shen, Yanrui Jin, Yong Geng
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
To achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality, as well as common prosperity, is the key decision of the Chinese government. By addressing coordinated regional development and based upon balanced and reasonable distribution of income and carbon emission rights principles, the study aims to develop an equilibrium model to achieve regional carbon transfer payment. Carbon transfer payment can help adjust regional fiscal revenues so that the income distribution system is more in line with the scientific normal distribution characteristics under the common prosperity goal. Such a measure can address both equity and efficiency, balance carbon emission rights and development rights, contribute …

Systematic Study On Carbon Emission Reduction Of Municipal Solid Waste Treatment, Jisheng Long, Hailiang Du, Xin Zou, Jingying Huang
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Under the context of China's carbon peak and carbon neutrality, the treatment of municipal solid waste (MSW) is facing new challenge to reduce carbon emission. This study suggests that significant carbon emission reduction and dual cycle of mass and energy can be realized, under the context of MSW classification, by the collaborative treatment of multi-source solid waste in Eco-Industrial Park. Results showed that in 2020, the incineration and landfilling of MSW in China reduced 5.18 million tons of CO2 emission, at the same year, 15 million tons of CO2 emission could have been reduced if the wet waste was treated …
Forest Fire Effects On Landscape Snow Albedo Recovery And Decay, Max Gersh, Kelly E. Gleason, Anton Surunis
Forest Fire Effects On Landscape Snow Albedo Recovery And Decay, Max Gersh, Kelly E. Gleason, Anton Surunis
Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
Surface snow albedo (SSA) darkens immediately following a forest fire, while landscape snow albedo (LSA) brightens as more of the snow-covered surface becomes visible under the charred canopy. The duration and variability of the post-fire snow albedo recovery process remain unknown beyond a few years following the fire. We evaluated the temporal variability of post-fire snow albedo recovery relative to burn severity across a chronosequence of eight burned forests burned from 2000 to 2019, using pre- and post-fire daily, seasonal, and annual landscape snow albedo data derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MOD10A1). Post-fire annual LSA increased by 21% …

Sewage released from lakeside development can reshape ecological communities. Nearshore periphyton can rapidly assimilate sewage-associated nutrients, leading to increases of filamentous algal abundance, thus altering both food abundance and quality for grazers. In Lake Baikal, a large, ultra-oligotrophic, remote lake in Siberia, filamentous algal abundance has increased near lakeside developments, and localized sewage input is the suspected cause. These shifts are of particular interest in Lake Baikal, where endemic littoral biodiversity is high, lakeside settlements are mostly small, tourism is relatively high (~1.2 million visitors annually), and settlements are separated by large tracts of undisturbed shoreline, enabling investigation of heterogeneity …

Collateral Damage: Anticoagulant Rodenticides Pose Threats To California Condors, Garth Herring, Collin A. Eagles-Smith, Rachel Wolstenholme, Alacia Welch, Chris West, Barnett A. Rattner
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are widespread environmental contaminants that pose risks to scavenging birds because they routinely occur within their prey and can cause secondary poisoning. However, little is known about AR exposure in one of the rarest avian scavengers in the world, the California condor (Gymnogyps californianus). We assessed AR exposure in California condors and surrogate turkey vultures (Cathartes aura) to gauge potential hazard to a proposed future condor flock by determining how application rate and environmental factors influence exposure. Additionally, we examined whether ARs might be correlated with prolonged blood clotting time and potential mortality …

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is presumed to have originated from wildlife and shares homology with other bat coronaviruses. Determining the susceptibility of North American bat species to SARS-CoV-2 is of utmost importance for making decisions regarding wildlife management, public health, and conservation. In this study, Brazilian free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis) were experimentally infected with two strains of SARS-CoV-2 (parental WA01 and Delta variant), evaluated for clinical disease, sampled for viral shedding and antibody production, and analyzed for pathology. None of the bats (n = 18) developed clinical disease associated with infection, shed infectious virus, or …

Limited Rigor In Studies Of Raptor Mortality And Mitigation At Wind Power Facilities, Tara J. Conkling, Christopher J.W. Mcclure, Sandra Cuadros, Scott R. Loss, Todd E. Katzner
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Wind power is an expanding source of renewable energy. However, there are ecological challenges related to wind energy generation, including collisions of wildlife with turbines. Lack of rigor, and variation in study design, together limit efforts to understand the broad-scale effects of wind power infrastructure on wildlife populations. It is not clear, however, whether these types of limitations apply to groups of birds such as raptors that are particularly vulnerable to negative effects of wind energy. We reviewed 672 peer-reviewed publications, unpublished reports, and citations from 321 wind facilities in 12 countries to evaluate methods used to monitor and mitigate …

Increasing human-wildlife conflicts worldwide are driving the need for multiple solutions to reducing “problem” wildlife and their impacts. Fertility control is advocated as a non-lethal tool to manage free-living wildlife and in particular to control iconic species. Injectable immunocontraceptives, such as GonaCon, stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies against the gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which in turn affects the release of reproductive hormones in mammals. Feral cattle (Bos indicus or Bos taurus) in Hong Kong are an iconic species whose numbers and impacts on human activities have increased over the last decade. Previous studies have proven that a …

Absence Of Visitors During Lockdown Reveals Natural Variation In Carbon Dioxide Level In The Glowworm Cave, Waitomo, New Zealand, David J. Merritt, Chris Hendy Dr, Shannon Corkill Ms
International Journal of Speleology
Waitomo Glowworm Cave is a highly visited cave where the highlight is viewing the bioluminescence display of a large colony of glowworms. Anthropogenic carbon dioxide build-up in the cave is prevented by management of chimney-effect ventilation aided by a network of microclimate sensors. A cave door prevents ventilationunder drying conditions and promotes it when necessary to clear CO2 and when inflowing air has high relative humidity. A COVID-19-related nationwide “lockdown” in New Zealand from March 2020 resulted in neither staff nor visitors being present in the cave for 60 days, and provided an opportunity to assess the natural microclimate …

Exposure to extreme heat is a known risk factor that is associated with increased heat-related illness (HRI) outcomes. The relevance of heat wave definitions (HWDs) could change across health conditions and geographies due to the heterogenous climate profile. This study compared the sensitivity of 28 HWDs associated with HRI emergency department visits over five summer seasons (2011–2016), stratified by two physiographic regions (Coastal and Piedmont) in North Carolina. The HRI rate ratios associated with heat waves were estimated using the generalized linear regression framework assuming a negative binomial distribution. We compared the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) values across the HWDs …

Evaluating The Potential Effect Of Nitrogen And Toxicological Responses Of Juvenile Lampsilis Reeveiana (Mollusca: Unionidae) In The Buffalo National River, Anna Marie Pieri
Student Theses and Dissertations
The Buffalo National River (BUFF) was established as the first national river in 1972 and later designated as an Extraordinary Resource Water and Natural and Scenic Waterway. This thesis seeks to address the potential threat of elevated nutrients and its association with freshwater mussel declines in the BUFF through laboratory and in situ exposures. Water and sediment chemistry data were collected, and relevant thresholds were used to extrapolate lab-to-field toxicity during low-flow events. Acute toxicity was not observed; however, low-concentration chronic toxicity may be influencing mussel assemblages with rising temperatures. Water quality degradation is likely the result of combined sources …

Assessment Of Water Quality, Fish Diversity, And Lead (Pb) In The Agriculturally Dominated Upper Cache River Watershed, Arkansas, Amelia K. Atwell
Student Theses and Dissertations
Freshwater is an important, finite, commodity necessary for nearly all facets of human life. Due to its vast usage, a large portion of freshwater has become impaired, impacting water quality. Worldwide, pollution from rivers and streams are causing eutrophication in marine environments into which they flow, negatively affecting aquatic life. The hypoxic zone in the Gulf of Mexico has reached record size in the last decade with agricultural activity within the Mississippi River Basin, including the Cache River Watershed of northeast Arkansas, contributing to the cause. Over 70% of the Cache River Watershed is used for agriculture and the upper …

The archaeological survey, located on campus property, exists as part of ongoing research conducted by the “Furman Landscapes Archaeological Project” in order to garner a better understanding of the land-use and occupation history of the current Furman campus. Our focus this season was on the remains of a historic structure visible in aerial photos from the 1940s, but with only a foundation are surrounding debris visible today. Our survey and test excavations …
Investigating The Causes Of Stope Instability At Golden Valley Mine, Ashley Ruvimbo Sabao, Prosper Munemo, Peter Kolapo
Investigating The Causes Of Stope Instability At Golden Valley Mine, Ashley Ruvimbo Sabao, Prosper Munemo, Peter Kolapo
Journal of Sustainable Mining
The study is based on mining operations that are concentrated in a ground exposed to flooding with varying stope dimensions. Stope stability was assessed in the four stopes, which resembled the mine’s different ground conditions using the stability graph complemented by the equivalent linear over break slough (ELOS) stability approach. The stability graph showed that the stopes in rock masses exposed to flooding fell in the potentially unstable and caving zones whereas the ones that were not affected by flooding fell in the stable zones. The ELOS approach showed that mining the previously flooded rock masses resulted in high over-breaks …

Supporting Dataset For Observed And Projected Global Warming Pressure On Coastal Hypoxia, Michael M. Whitney
Department of Marine Sciences
This archive contains the supporting dataset for the Biogeosciences article “Observed and projected global warming pressure on coastal hypoxia” by Michael M. Whitney. The main objective of the article is studying global patterns exacerbating coastal hypoxia by analyzing linear trends in SST, surface oxygen capacity (saturation concentration), and (vertical-minimum) oxygen concentration. Observations from a satellite-derived SST global climate dataset are analyzed to provide a context of coastal SST and oxygen-capacity trends observed over the last four decades. New analysis of 21st century projections from the Community Earth System Model (CESM) Large Ensemble Project is completed for coastal areas. Observed and …
