Evaluating The Enzymatic Activity Of Transformed X. Cucurbitae, Emily Beger, Iris Lee, Sarah Hind
Evaluating The Enzymatic Activity Of Transformed X. Cucurbitae, Emily Beger, Iris Lee, Sarah Hind
PRECS student projects
Introduction
- The United States’ pumpkin industry exceeds one billion dollars [1], with Illinois contributing to over 90% of processing pumpkin production.
- Pumpkin growers face a rising concern due to the increasing occurrence of Xanthomonas cucurbitae , the pathogen that causes bacterial spot disease in cucurbits, including pumpkins.
- X. cucurbitae infection leads to the appearance of small, sunken, beige spots on cucurbit fruits and leaves.
- Over time, the bacterium can compromise fruit integrity by breaking down the epidermis and cuticle. • Bacterial spot disease also creates opportunities for other bacteria and fungi to infiltrate the affected fruits, leading to fruit rot …
The Effects Of False Springs And Late Freezing Events On Germination Success Of Prairie Plants, Sawyer J. Wittman
The Effects Of False Springs And Late Freezing Events On Germination Success Of Prairie Plants, Sawyer J. Wittman
2023 Midwest Ecology & Evolution Conference
Prairie ecosystems are some of the most fragmented habitats across the Midwestern USA and are susceptible to the effects of climate change. False springs occur when temperatures rise unseasonably early, followed by low temperatures returning. A late freeze is when temperatures drop drastically in early spring, potentially damaging the plants that begin to grow. This research experimentally tests how winter climate change affects the germination rates of 24 different prairie plant species (12 in Poaceae, 4 Asteraceae, 4 in Fabaceae, and 4 in Lamiaceae), where half bloom in the spring and half bloom in the summer. Seeds are cold stratified …

Preliminary Report On Fossil Marine Vertebrates From The Upper Cretaceous Hartland Shale From Republic County, Kansas, Brianna E. Ortiz
2023 Midwest Ecology & Evolution Conference
The Hartland Shale of the Upper Cretaceous Greenhorn Limestone is a rock unit broadly distributed in north-central Kansas, that formed in the Western Interior Seaway, a Late Cretaceous epicontinental seaway in North America approximately 93 million years ago. The vertebrate fossil record of the Hartland Shale of Kansas is poorly known, where previous records were confined to a tooth of the extinct lamniform shark Cretoxyrhina mantelli and skeletal remains of a plesiosaur besides taxonomically uninformative bones and teeth of bony fishes. Here, we describe additional teeth of C. mantelli as well as the discovery of multiple teeth belonging to a …
Rapid Assesment Of Aquatic Insect Diversity And Abundance Used To Evaluate The Quality Of Stream Restoration, Kaleb Stephen Kindoll
Rapid Assesment Of Aquatic Insect Diversity And Abundance Used To Evaluate The Quality Of Stream Restoration, Kaleb Stephen Kindoll
2023 Midwest Ecology & Evolution Conference
Stream and wetland restoration activities seek to improve the function of aquatic ecosystems. Measurement of the diversity and abundance of aquatic insects are commonly used to evaluate the success of restoration efforts, but these measurements are often very time consuming. In this study, we attempt to construct an efficient method that can be used to rapidly assess the diversity and abundance of aquatic insects as a measure of the quality of stream restoration. We suspended uniform sized pieces of cardboard paper coated with adhesive to trap insects in three different environments: one restored and two unrestored streams with similar characteristics. …
Evaluating Habitat Suitability In Lake Superior And Michigan Streams For The Freshwater Diatom, Didymosphenia Geminata, Nuphar Rimer
Evaluating Habitat Suitability In Lake Superior And Michigan Streams For The Freshwater Diatom, Didymosphenia Geminata, Nuphar Rimer
2023 Midwest Ecology & Evolution Conference
Didymosphenia geminata (didymo or rock snot) is a benthic, freshwater diatom that is native to North America and Europe. Although it is native, it is displaying invasive qualities through seasonal stalk production. Stalks accumulate into large, unattractive mats that have the potential to alter benthic aquatic communities. The ecology of didymo is puzzling; it has been steadily expanding outside of its native range, and seasonal mat production can be unpredictable. Michigan is well known for outdoor recreation, attracting sportsmen from around the world to fish. Fishing is an integral part of Michigan’s tourism industry, but high foot traffic increases the …

Monitoring Personal Exposure To Air Quality Gradients While Biking On An Elevated Urban Trail, Gavin Salas
2023 Midwest Ecology & Evolution Conference
Air pollution is a major global health concern, specifically as it relates to the human exposome. The EPA criteria pollutants, including particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and NOx can have severe impacts on respiratory and cardiovascular health, particularly in populations with chronic illnesses such as asthma, those facing economic hardships and individuals who frequently spend time outdoors, such as bicyclists and runners. To understand the impact of air pollution on human health, it is essential to assess personal exposure. This study aimed to investigate personal exposure to air pollution levels while biking along a former elevated …
Consumers And Eco-Labels: A Quantitative Analysis Of The Effects Of Various Sustainability Certification Models On Consumer Opinions, William F. Joseph
Consumers And Eco-Labels: A Quantitative Analysis Of The Effects Of Various Sustainability Certification Models On Consumer Opinions, William F. Joseph
Senior Theses
This research consists of an econometric analysis of the efficacy of a privatized sustainability certification model versus a proposed government-endorsed sustainability certification model within the United Sates market. Today, the widely accepted model of sustainability certification is constituted by a large market of private certifiers. By analyzing the effects of the current model and alongside the effects of a hypothetical government-endorsed system on consumer preferences for sustainably produced goods, the thesis aims to motivate further discussion into the possible benefit of adopting a government-sponsored sustainability certification system. In general, analysis of the data suggests much more promising and significant effects …

Templates To Transition: Making Solar-Generated Electricity Accessible For Lagos Residents, Adeola O. Adebajo
Senior Theses
According to the EPA, direct energy production results in at least 25% of the world’s emissions. This refers to emissions produced by burning coal, natural gas, and oil for electricity and heat. With the increasing effects of climate change, sustainable energy is becoming increasingly important as the world shifts away from fossil fuels. However, implementation of renewable energy sources is not as fast or as widespread as necessary. This paper aims to identify feasible solutions to the problem of renewable energy affordability in Nigeria especially in growing megacities like Lagos to ensure long lasting and climatefriendly energy sources. Two major …

Tourism, Mapping, Retail And Recreational Trails: A Case Study Of Connectivity Between Trails And Adjacent Downtowns In Anniston, Alabama, Usa, Jennifer Green
Theses
This study examines the estimated increase in economic impact on a geography’s local economy by creating cross-marketing efforts between expanding an established outdoor recreation trail to a closely located city downtown commerce district. This research will analyze the resulting potential rise in sales/lodging tax revenues for that city by mapping the trail and downtown district, and cross-marketing the other to users of both or either venue. Potential increase in economic impact will be estimated utilizing IMPLAN methodology by assessing the economic impact on the local economy that a percentage range of increased spending resulting from this cross-marketing effort could generate.

Fusarium Isolates Adapt To Specific Wheat Tissues, Liam Kent, Mara Krone, Santiago Mideros
Fusarium Isolates Adapt To Specific Wheat Tissues, Liam Kent, Mara Krone, Santiago Mideros
PRECS student projects
Introduction
Tissue specificity is a pathogen’s preference for infecting one section of tissue (i.e., root, stem, or head) over another. 1 Having a better understanding of a pathogen’s ability to cause disease on specific tissues could contribute to new mechanisms of disease control. This will allow growers to make the best decision on effective pathogen management. In 2022, Fusarium isolates were collected from wheat heads and roots across Illinois. These isolates were used in a pathogen aggressiveness assay on wheat roots, in an in vitro growth rate experiment , and in the development of a spore quantification protocol. The phenotypic …

Anhedonia is defined as a reduced or complete loss of pleasure from a previously pleasurable stimulus, and it is comprised of two dimensions:
- Hedonic anhedonia consists of a distinct loss of pleasure in consumption of a normally pleasurable stimulus.
- Motivational anhedonia involves the goal directed behavior to obtain a reward.
Withdrawal induced anhedonia following use of methamphetamine (METH) is thought to contribute to relapse behaviors1,2 . The anhedonic effects of drug withdrawal largely depend on dose, frequency, and the duration of drug exposure4,5,6.
The role of sex and age of exposure in this context has yet to …

The Tomato Strikes Back: Plant Response To Environmental Stress, Maya K. Davis, Erinn Dady, Esther N. Ngumbi
PRECS student projects
Introduction
- Tomato is an important vegetable. Its production is threatened due to altered weather patterns which increase environmental stressors such as flooding1, 2 and herbivory3 to crops.
- Plants respond in many ways. Stressed plants strike back to environmental stress by altering their chemistry4:
- Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) emissions
- Defensive secondary metabolites2
- Stress induced physiological changes in plants impact growth and development of insects.
- This study is broken into two experiments:
- The plant response to flooding stress
- The insect performance on flooded plants

Drylands cover 40 % of the global land surface and more than 3 billion people worldwide are dependent on the ecosystem services (ES) that they provide (Hoover et al., 2020). Dryland ecosystems are subject to multiple forces of change, including climate change, invasive plants, and increasing wildfires (Maestre et al., 2016). For example, human pressure and land use intensification can quickly induce changes in healthy drylands that lead to degradation, thus reducing their capacity to recover from extreme climate events (Gunderson, 2000, Sun et al., 2021). We define degradation as a transition from a functional native ecosystem to an undesired …
Evaluating The On-Site Impacts Of The Ambatovy Project Through The Lens Of Environmental Justice, Nick Karlik
Evaluating The On-Site Impacts Of The Ambatovy Project Through The Lens Of Environmental Justice, Nick Karlik
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
In Madagascar, sustainable development has been established and maintained by dominant foreign actors to reconcile neoliberalism with globalized conceptions of environmental protection. The Ambatovy mining and refining project has emerged as a prominent example of this developmental mode; Ambatovy is the largest economic enterprise in the history of the country and one of the largest and most productive mining operations in the world, generating billions of dollars in revenue for a country that remains among the poorest in the world while offsetting its impact on endemic biodiversity and forest habitat through conservation initiatives. At the same time, the evaluative framework …
A Comparative Life Cycle Assessment Of Cork Versus Traditional Shoe Insole Material, Alexandra Lum
A Comparative Life Cycle Assessment Of Cork Versus Traditional Shoe Insole Material, Alexandra Lum
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Shoes are conventionally produced from materials like plastic or rubber that have detrimental impacts on the environment such as exacerbating existing waste accumulation, increasing global amounts of greenhouse gasses, or releasing toxic chemicals into soils and groundwater. These impacts have pushed footwear companies to introduce more sustainable and ecologically-friendly materials in their products. Roughly half of all cork production occurs in Portugal. The present work employs a comparative life cycle assessment approach between traditional plastic and rubber insole material and cork insole material to investigate the environmental impact of each. Results show that during each stage of the insole life …

Unleash The Heat: Exploring Geothermal Energy Perspectives And Energy Literacy In São Miguel, Azores, Lena Mcdonough
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The green energy transition is moving ahead in EU countries at very different paces, and there are some key challenges that all regions currently face in trying to phase fossil fuels out of their energy mixes. One of these challenges is that most regions simply cannot harness enough renewable energy sources and simultaneously have the storage technology for creating a baseload power source as reliable as oil, coal and natural gas. That is, unless you sit in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean on the boundary of three tectonic plates, with a continuous and reliable renewable energy source beneath your …
Wishing For Water While Fleeing Their Farms: A Study Of Water Scarcity And Internal Migration In Tunisia, Tyler Rak
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
How does water scarcity and limited water access impact internal migration? I argue that water scarcity and limited access to water is likely to increase internal migration in Tunisia. The mechanism through which I will investigate this relationship is in the agricultural sector. In this research, I found that water scarcity does exist in Tunisia and that scarcity impacts the economy, employment, and perceptions of rural areas in Tunisia. This, in turn, likely contributes to internal migration, although my research could not conclude whether water scarcity acts a causative factor to internal migration. This topic has become more prevalent than …

Neoliberalismo Y La Mar: Los Efectos Del Sistema Neoliberal Y La Pesca Artesanal De Caleta Portales, Isaac Bronfine
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This study is meant to explore the fundamental conflict between the neoliberal system implemented in Chilean society and the artisanal fishing sector, represented by Caleta Diego Portales in Valparaíso, Chile. The struggle of the artisanal fishing sector has been made more salient in the minds of the general Chilean public due to the estallido social or “social explosion” in 2019 which lead to a process of drafting a new constitution, and the recent corruption scandals regarding government officials and fishing law reforms.
Beginning with how neoliberal theory gained traction in intellectual spaces around the world, this study then examines how …

A Transition Point: The Role Of The Global Power Shift In Facilitating Saudi Internal Reforms, Aidan Aguilar
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The increasing political and economic influence of China represents a pivotal point within international relations. This paper aims to explore the implications of this global power shift on Saudi Arabia’s attempted economic reforms. The Kingdom’s reliance on oil has created an unsustainable economic model, and this model is intrinsically linked to Saudi Arabia’s relationship with the United States. Its growing relationship with China could create change. As such, this paper analyzes the intersection of economics and security in relation to the Saudi Vision 2030. I argue that, not only does China serve as an important source of the investment necessary …
