Organic Matter Quality Influences Aerobic And Anaerobic Respiration Rates In Peatland Soils, Rachel Shaw, Lauren Bryan, Madison Smith, Christian Lundy, Alexis Koehl, Grace Behrens, Mackenzie Dole, Madeleine O'Donnell
22nd Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2023)
The vulnerability of peatland carbon reservoirs to decomposition in a warming climate remains a key uncertainty in Earth System Models. This will be determined in part by the "quality" of the peatland organic matter, i.e. the ease by which it is decomposed by the microbial community. We developed an index of organic matter quality based on the biochemical composition of the peat. The index uses a principal components analysis of proxies based on the carbohydrate composition, hydrolysable amino acids, C:N, pH, and nutrient availability in the peat porewater. The index was compared with measurements of aerobic and anaerobic respiration rates …

Temperature Sensitivity Of Nitrogen Mineralization In Peat From A Southwestern Michigan Bog, Madison Smith, Lauren Bryan, Rachel Shaw, Mackenzie Dole, Madeleine O'Donnell
22nd Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2023)
In this study, we measured inorganic nitrogen (nitrate and ammonium) released from peat cores from Miner Lake bog at two temperatures to analyze the impact of climate warming on the peatland nitrogen cycle. We hypothesized a higher nitrogen release in samples incubated at warmer temperatures. Furthermore, previous research indicates shallow peat decomposes faster than deeper peat. Therefore, we hypothesized faster nitrogen mineralization in shallow samples. We collected peat cores from two locations from Miner Lake Bog in Allegan County, Michigan: a plot in the center of the bog and a sedge meadow site near the edge. Two samples for each …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Severe nuclear accidents, including the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident, can lead to the discharge of large amounts of radionuclides into aquatic environments. Some radionuclides such as 137Cs and 90Sr have long half-lives and can remain in the environment for a long period of time. These radionuclides can be detrimental to humans and the environments because they can cause human and environmental exposure to ionizing radiation and because they can be bioaccumulated and biomagnified. Therefore, in case of a severe accident and a radioactive spill, it is important to quickly clean up and treat radioactively contaminated water to …

The 7 maar lakes of San Pablo are a cluster of small volcanic lakes on Luzon Island; Philippines. These lakes; which are heavily utilized for aquaculture and ecotourism; usually experience fish kills that coincide with the northeast monsoon (NEM). This study explores limnophysical processes; particularly mixing regimes; in the lakes in relation to prevailing monsoons. We monitored monthly vertical and seasonal profiles of water temperature; salinity; conductivity; and dissolved oxygen from October 2016 to December 2018. Three types of mixing regimes were observed among the lakes; which have similar surface areas but different depths: polymixis in the shallowest; warm monomixis …

Climate warming and related drivers of soil thermal change in the Arctic are expected to modify the distribution and dynamics of carbon contained in perennially frozen grounds. Thawing of permafrost in the Mackenzie River watershed of northwestern Canada, coupled with increases in river discharge and coastal erosion, triggers the release of terrestrial organic matter (OMt) from the largest Arctic drainage basin in North America into the Arctic Ocean. While this process is ongoing and its rate is accelerating, the fate of the newly mobilized organic matter as it transits from the watershed through the delta and into the marine system …

Phragmites Australis Seeds From Great Salt Lake Have A Lower Salinity Tolerance Than Expected, Sandra Johnston
Phragmites Australis Seeds From Great Salt Lake Have A Lower Salinity Tolerance Than Expected, Sandra Johnston
Student Research Symposium
The Great Salt Lake is an important part of Utah’s natural resources. However, Great Salt lake wetlands are becoming overtaken by Phragmites australis, an invasive species originating from Eurasia. Introduced into North America, this plant has spread to create dense monocultures, quickly taking over native species and degrading avian habitat. Several P. australis populations have been found to survive in salinities up to 45-60 parts per thousand (ppt). However, there are multiple studies with conflicting results about the maximum salinity tolerance of P. australis (i.e., 23-60 ppt). This experiment will compare the salinity ranges of native species and non-native P. …
Here Come The Floods: Classification Of Rain-On-Snow Induced Flooding In Nevada, Emma Watts
Here Come The Floods: Classification Of Rain-On-Snow Induced Flooding In Nevada, Emma Watts
Student Research Symposium
Given Nevada’s history of destructive flooding resulting from rain falling on mountainous snowpack, often called rain-on-snow (ROS) events, there is a great need to incorporate these events and their residual effects in infrastructure design methods. Examining relationships between USGS streamflow measurements and climate variables (specifically precipitation, temperature, and snowpack) obtained from neighboring SNOTEL stations provides means by which to classify ROS-induced floods from ROS events. Using both temperature and snowpack-based criterion to classify ROS events, this project differentiates between non-ROS and ROS-induced floods in a subset of USGS stations across the Sierra Nevada and reveals that ROS-induced floods produce, on …

Non-technical summary. The United Nations’ sustainable development goals (SDGs) articulate societal aspirations for people and our planet. Many scientists have criticised the SDGs and some have suggested that a better understanding of the complex interactions between society and the environment should underpin the next global development agenda. We further this discussion through the theory of social–ecological resilience, which emphasises the ability of systems to absorb, adapt, and transform in the face of change. We determine the strengths of the current SDGs, which should form a basis for the next agenda, and identify key gaps that should be filled.

Deficit Irrigation Management For Irrigated Corn In Nebraska: Economically Viable?, Lia Nogueira, Cory Walters, Emily O'Donnell, E. Wesley F. Peterson, Suat Irmak
Cornhusker Economics
In this study we determine the economic value of deficit irrigation management using both technological and methodological advancements. The use of soil moisture probes represents the technological improvement. We provide improvements in the methodology as follows. Regarding data, we employ a field-size study, instead of plots, where the irrigation decision is determined by the moisture level in the soil measured through a soil moisture probe. Regarding the understanding of the yield response to water, although we examine the commonly used quadratic function, we improve upon this specification by also examining an alternative response function, the linear response stochastic plateau. Our …

Plant diseases significantly reduce crop yields, threatening food security and agricultural sustainability. Fungi are the most destructive type of phytopathogen, and they are responsible for major yield losses in some of the most crucial crops grown across the world. In this study, a fungus isolate was detected from infected tomato plants and molecularly identified as Pythium aphanidermatum (GenBank accession number MW725032). This fungus caused damping-off disease and was shown to be pathogenic. Moreover, the expression of five pathogenesis-related genes, namely PR-1, PR-2, PR-3, PR-4, and PR-5, was quantitatively evaluated under the inoculation of tomato with …

Predicting Groundwater Spring Locations From Topographic And Climatic Data Using Maxent Modeling, Ayten Ece Koc
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The World Resources Institute reveals that 17 countries face extremely high levels of water stress. Moreover, with increasing population and industrialization, the gap between water supply and demand increases day by day around the world. Groundwater is a key freshwater source, and springs are important resources as they enable to access groundwater. Therefore, it is crucial to monitor, protect, and manage groundwater springs. The first step in spring management is to recognize and define freshwater resources and to determine the locations of groundwater springs that serve as natural discharge points. Traditionally, field studies have been employed to determine the locations …

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a danger to every household that has access to chemical products such as air fresheners or select cleaning products. VOCs are dangerous when people are around high concentrations for any extended period. This experiment was conducted to examine the ability of sansevieria plants to filter VOCs added from normal household products. The plants used in this experiment were propagated into smaller pieces in order to fit into capsules. To begin testing, the contaminants were added to the capsules and the VOC levels were measured overtime with the Ion Science Tiger sensor. The basic trend of …

Spot-Fire Distance Increases Disproportionately For Wildfires Compared To Prescribed Fires As Grasslands Transition To Juniperus Woodlands, Victoria M. Donovan, Dillon T. Fogarty, Dirac L. Twidwell Jr
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Woody encroachment is one of the greatest threats to grasslands globally, depleting a suite of ecosystem services, including forage production and grassland biodiversity. Recent evidence also suggests that woody encroachment increases wildfire danger, particularly in the Great Plains of North America, where highly volatile Juniperus spp. convert grasslands to an alternative woodland state. Spot-fire distances are a critical component of wildfire danger, describing the distance over which embers from one fire can cause a new fire ignition, potentially far away from fire suppression personnel. We assess changes in spot-fire distances as grasslands experience Juniperus encroachment to an alternative woodland state …

Urban neighborhoods with locations of environmental contamination, known as brownfields, impact entire neighborhoods, but corrective environmental remedial action on brownfields is often tracked on an individual property basis, neglecting the larger neighborhood-level impact. This study addresses this impact by examining spatial differences between brownfields with unmitigated environmental concerns (open site) and sites that are considered fully mitigated or closed in urban neighborhoods (closed site) on the US census tract scale in Wayne County, MI. Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s leaking underground storage tank (LUST) database provided brownfield information for Wayne County. Local indicators of spatial association (LISA) …

Forecasting Winners And Losers Of Climate Change: Insights From The Interactions Between Organisms And Their Microclimates, Michael Sears
Forecasting Winners And Losers Of Climate Change: Insights From The Interactions Between Organisms And Their Microclimates, Michael Sears
Sustainability Seminar Series
Meaningful forecasts of the responses of organisms to climate require an explicit understanding of how organismal behavior and physiology are affected by environmental heterogeneity. Such predictions are complicated because physiology and behavior vary over different time scales, vary across different life stages, and do not operate in isolation of one another. In this talk, I review case studies from my lab to highlight progress that has been made along these fronts and provide generalizations that might be made to other systems, particularly in the context of predicting responses to climate change.
