Saturating Growth Rate Against Phosphorus Concentration Explained By Macromolecular Allocation, Gabrielle Armin, Jongsun Kim, Keisuke Inomura Aug 2023

Saturating Growth Rate Against Phosphorus Concentration Explained By Macromolecular Allocation, Gabrielle Armin, Jongsun Kim, Keisuke Inomura

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

The saturating relationship between phytoplankton growth rate and environmental nutrient concentration has been widely observed, yet the mechanisms behind the relationship remain elusive. Here, we use a mechanistic model of phytoplankton and show that the saturating relationship between growth rate and phosphorous concentration can be interpreted by intracellular macromolecular allocation. At low nutrient levels, the diffusive nutrient transport linearly increases with the phosphorous concentration, while the internal phosphorous requirement increases with the growth rate, leading to a non-linear increase in the growth rate with phosphorous. This increased phosphorous requirement is due to the increased allocation to biosynthetic and photosynthetic molecules. …

Agricultural irrigation practices have changed through time as technology has enabled more efficient conveyance and application. In some agricultural regions, irrigation can contribute to incidental aquifer recharge important for groundwater return flows to streams. The Henrys Fork Snake River, Idaho (United States) overlies a portion of the Eastern Snake Plain Aquifer, where irrigated agriculture has occurred for over a century. Using irrigator interviews, aerial and satellite imagery, and statistical streamflow analysis, we document the impact of farm-scale decisions on basin-scale hydrology. Motivated to improve economic efficiency, irrigators began converting from surface to center-pivot sprinkler irrigation in the 1950s, with rapid …

Environmental DNA studies have proliferated over the last decade, with promising data describing the diversity of organisms inhabiting aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The recovery of DNA present in the sediment of aquatic systems (sedDNA) has provided short- and long-term data on a wide range of biological groups (e.g., photosynthetic organisms, zooplankton species) and has advanced our understanding of how environmental changes have affected aquatic communities. However, substantial challenges remain for recovering the genetic material of macro-organisms (e.g., fish) from sediments, preventing complete reconstructions of past aquatic ecosystems, and limiting our understanding of historic, higher trophic level interactions. In this review, …

Managed Aquifer Recharge: Installation And Early Evaluation Of Infiltration Galleries In The Cache River Critical Groundwater Area, Northeast Arkansas, Allegra Christiane Pieri Aug 2023

Managed Aquifer Recharge: Installation And Early Evaluation Of Infiltration Galleries In The Cache River Critical Groundwater Area, Northeast Arkansas, Allegra Christiane Pieri

Student Theses and Dissertations

Arkansas ranks third in the nation for irrigated land, with water primarily sourced from the Mississippi River Valley alluvial (MRVA) aquifer. Intensive irrigation combined with limited natural recharge due to the region’s geology has led to the designation of critical groundwater areas. The Cache River Critical Groundwater Area (CRCGA) has undergone severe declines, impacting agricultural production and threatening aquifer depletion. This thesis outlines the construction of two infiltration galleries for managed aquifer recharge (MAR) and investigated the early stages of their capacity to recharge the MRVA aquifer. The infiltration galleries and MRVA aquifer were physically capable of accepting reservoir water …

The Implications Of Solidarity For Food Ethics, John Sniegocki Aug 2023

The Implications Of Solidarity For Food Ethics, John Sniegocki

The Journal of Social Encounters

This essay examines numerous ways in which commitments to solidarity have relevance in the area of food ethics. Among the topics explored are food insecurity and hunger, workers’ rights, ecology, and the treatment of animals. Particular attention is paid to the impacts of the production and consumption of animal products. These issues are examined through the lens of the developing understanding of solidarity present in the tradition of Catholic social teaching (CST). The ethical framework provided by CST, it is suggested, could be further enhanced by insights drawn from the growing tradition of “Black veganism” and its holistic, intersectional understanding …

Mining-Induced Shear Deformation And Permeability Evolution Law Of Crushed Rock Mass In Fault Zone, Li Qiang, Ma Dan, Zhang Jixiong, Liu Yong, Hou Wentao Aug 2023

Mining-Induced Shear Deformation And Permeability Evolution Law Of Crushed Rock Mass In Fault Zone, Li Qiang, Ma Dan, Zhang Jixiong, Liu Yong, Hou Wentao

Coal Geology & Exploration

To explore the mechanism of water inrush induced by fault activation under mining, experimental studies were conducted on the shear deformation and permeability evolution of crushed rock mass in fault zone. Specifically, a set of compression-shear-seepage test system for crushed rock mass was designed according to the principle of fluid-solid coupling, with the coupling process of shear deformation and seepage realized. On this basis, the shear-seepage coupling test was carried out for the crushed rock mass under the influence of multiple factors. Thus, the influence of particle size distribution and initial porosity of crushed rock mass on porosity and permeability …

Stimulation Effect Of Pulsed Ultrasonic Excitation On Coal Pores With Full-Scale Pore Sizes, Lin Haifei, Qiu Yue, Han Shuangze, Gao Haidong, Yang Erhao, Wang Ruizhe, Yan Min

Coal Geology & Exploration

This study aims to further investigate the stimulation effect of pulsed ultrasonic excitation on coal pore structures. Using an ultrasonic excitation test system for gas-containing coals, this study conducted ultrasonic excitation tests on coals under continuous and interactive pulses with ultrasonic power of 800 W and 1000 W. Through low-pressure CO2 adsorption tests, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption tests, and the mercury injection capillary pressure (MICP) tests, this study explored the evolutionary patterns of parameters of various coal pores with full-scale pore sizes, including macropores (> 50 nm), mesopores (2‒50 nm), and micropores (< 2 nm). The test results are as follows: (1) Pulsed ultrasonic waves can expand coal pores. The pore volume of coals was primarily provided by micropores and macropores, with mesopores representing a small proportion. The specific surface area of various coal pores was in the order of micropores > mesopores > macropores. (2) Compared with those having …

Sealing Performance Analysis And Structure Optimization Of Pressure-Preserved Controller For Pressure-Preserved Coring In Deep Coal Mine, Wang Tianyu, Li Jianan, Zhang Yiwei, Li Ju, Xie Heping Aug 2023

Sealing Performance Analysis And Structure Optimization Of Pressure-Preserved Controller For Pressure-Preserved Coring In Deep Coal Mine, Wang Tianyu, Li Jianan, Zhang Yiwei, Li Ju, Xie Heping

Coal Geology & Exploration

As the pressure-preserved controller is a core component of the deep coal in-situ pressure-preserved coring device, its sealing design plays a decisive role in the effect of pressure-preserved coring. In order to obtain the optimal sealing structure, a two-dimensional axisymmetric nonlinear contact model was established for the sealing structure of the pressure-preserved controller. On this basis, the effects of different groove design, cone angle selection and friction coefficient on the sealing performance were analyzed by orthogonal test method. Meanwhile, the stress changes of the sealing ring under different closing stages and medium pressures were studied. The results show that: the …
