The aim of the survey was fivefold,

(1) to determine the present abundance and composition of saltwater crocodile populations in Western Australia,

(2) to comment on the status of the freshwater crocodile in Western Australia following 7 years of total protection,

(3) to locate study area(s) for detailed work on crocodile biology,

(4) to investigate the feelings of people on the spot (especially shooters or ex-shooters) towards crocodile conservation, and

(5) to investigate law enforcement problems relating to crocodiles

Beggar-Tick Injury To A Northern Cricket Frog And Two Species Of Minnows, Larry A. Witt, Leonard H. Sisson

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

Various authors have reported on injury to small fishes by achenes of beggar-ticks (Bidem sp.) Reimers and Bond (1966) reported on injury by beggar-ticks to redside shiners, Richardsonius balteatus and young chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha. They suggested that presence of beggar-tick plants along banks of hatchery ponds and raceways might be injurious to young of the most aggressive feeders among fish. Allison (1967) described mortality of fingerling coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch, caused by beggar-tick, B. cernuus, achenes. He noted losses of coho salmon 51 to 90 mm in total length held in hatchery raceways. Dead and …

The purpose of this study is to investigate the extent to which soil acts as an agent in the transmission of waterborne viruses. Since many waterborne outbreaks of viral diseases have involved small wellwater supplies contaminated by effluents from subsurface wastewater disposal systems, there is a great need for such information. Results of this study show that virus adsorption by soils is greatly affected by the pH, ionic strength, and soil-water ratio of the soil-water system and various soil properties. Also, it is shown that one cannot predict the relative virus adsorbing ability of a particular soil based on the …

In the first fiscal year of this project, the Institute of Marine Sciences, University of Miami, Florida, and the Department of Agriculture, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, under Public Law 88-309, began development of a program of continuous collection of statistical information on the quantity and value of landings of commercial marine fishes and shellfishes from Puerto Rican coastal waters (Caillouet, Garcia and Higman, 1968).

This research was part of a project underway at Barren River and Nolin River Reservoirs in south-central Kentucky. The research was partially supported by a grant through the Sport Fishing Institute, Washington, D.C.

The study reported herein was concerned with the analysis of trace metal concentrations in the two reservoirs. It is believed that the fish population may in part depend upon the trace metals present in the water. It became obvious during this investigation that while much work has been done with ferrate (VI) chemistry, discrepancies existed in the literature and very little attention had been given possible engineering uses. This work attempted to fulfill these two needs in an exploratory manner.

The preparative techniques were reviewed and mechanical improvements made in one which allowed improved yields. Essentially what was done was to enlarge and improve the filtering technique of the product and use cooler temperatures throughout the preparation. This greatly shortened the time required. Limestone groundwater flows mainly in openings it has solutionally enlarged, thus an understanding of the water's state of saturation relative to calcite (the principal mineral component of limestone) is fundamental to an understanding of the nature and evolution of the limestone aquifer. This study investigated the Mammoth Cave-Sinkhole Plain (MCSP) and Cave Hollow (CH) aquifers in Kentucky, both in Missippian limestones.

Both aquifers were always undersaturated with calcite. Except for completely ventilated vadose flows (usually) and some vadose seepage (occasionally), all recharges sampled (sinking streams, vadose flows, and vadose seepage) were also undersaturated. The lack of saturation in the MCSP …

A pilot study conducted in 1963 indicated that (1) cotton yields could be increased by subirrigation, (2) drilled orifices were unsatisfactory because of internal plugging caused by burrs and drilling particles, and (3) operating pressures of 5 and 10 psi were excessive, and 5 psi probably should be considered as an upper-limit pressure. A greenhouse study of a subirrigation system indicated that 2 psi should, in general, for in-wall orifices, be considered as a lower-limit pressure when orifices are built into the pipe wall. Delphinus bairdii Dall is a species of dolphin distinct from D. delphis Linnaeus, with which it has usually been synonymized. D. bairdii has a longer rostrum relative to the zygomatic width of the skull; the ratio of these measurements falls at 1.55 or above for bairdii and 1.53 and below for delphis. In the eastern Pacific Ocean, D. bairdii is found in the Gulf of California and along the west coast of Baja California, Mexico; D. delphis is presently found in the waters off California. Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

The sharp-tailed grouse formerly inhabited much of the area which is now Nebraska. The sharp-tailed, along with its near relative, the greater prairie chicken, disappeared from parts of its former range which were put into intense cultivation. The 20,000 square mile area of the Sandhills were not suited to such cultivation and consequently is the remaining stronghold of the sharp-tailed in Nebraska. It is one of the more important sharp-tail ranges remaining in the United States.

With continuing decreases in suitable sharp-tail habitat throughout its former range in the United States, it is important to understand land use trends and …
