Studies to determine the effects of dieldrin on social hierarchy of pheasants and chickens were initiated in 1970. Social interactions were observed among groups of pheasant chicks, adult cock and hen pheasants and peck-order development among groups of young pheasants. To determine the effects of dieldrin on the pecking behavior of individual birds, pairs of pheasants and pairs of chickens were placed in a neutral cage. When patterns of dominance and subordination were consistent, dieldrin in capsules (4 mg to pheasants and 6 and 10 mg to chickens twice weekly) was given to one member of each pair and birds …

A Comparison Of Aspen And Pine Communities In The Northern Black Hills, Jeremiah J. Kranz

Three study areas, each containing an aspen (Populus tremuloides) community, a pine (Pinus ponderosa) community, and a mixed aspen-pine community, were studied during the summers of 1968, 1969, and 1970. Soil chemistry, plant chemistry, overstory density, understory production, and use by whitetail deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and cattle (Bos taurus) were determined for each community in each study. Pine and aspen communities of one study area were sampled for soil and plant chemistry. Soil phosphate and potassium levels were higher in the aspen community, while soil nitrates were higher in the pine community. Soil pH was similar to the two communities. …

Progressive increases in concentration of dissolved solids in the Colorado River water from Lake Powell to Imperial Dam seem to alter plankton dynamics and biological productivity of the river. Also, changes in biological productivity and micronutrients concentrations occur within the same reservoir. Development of a digital simulation model to predict micronutrients concentrations and biological productivity is necessary for diagnosing changes in plankton population and effluent-carrying capacity of the system. This study developed from observations made during an earlier study on Lake Mead which was reported in CHE-70, Water Quality Study of Lake Mead. Results from that study indicated that poor-quality water was flowing into the Las Vegas Bay reach of Boulder Basin, Lake Mead. Also reports of deteriorating water quality, resulting in taste and odors in domestic water supplies taken from Boulder Basin as well as a reduction in the attractiveness of Las Vegas Bay for recreational uses caused by aquatic plants and algae blooms, indicated a need for a concentrated study concerning the effects of flows from Las …

A comparative limnological study was conducted at three east central Illinois farm ponds between March 15 and September 18, 1970, to determine the incidence of nitrogen and phosphorus in the ponds resulting from agricultural sources. All ponds had corn, soybean, winter wheat cropping systems on their watersheds. Corn accounted for the greatest fertilizer application. One pond had significant numbers of livestock on its watershed that contributed high amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus to its waters. The objective of this activity is to raise and stock progeny from adult Lake McConaughy rainbow trout for the purpose of: (1) establishing spawning runs of McConaughy strain rainbow trout in streams which have the potential to support reproduction, (2) develop a stocking program for streams which have a coldwater habitat but lack suitable spawning areas (these rainbow, upon reaching a size of seven to nine inches will migrate downstream to Lake McConaughy. The possible effects of proposed watershed management practices on fish resources of the Nemaha Basin were poorly understood; thus, a study was undertaken to ascertain the species of fish present and their relative abundance and distribution within the basin. Thirty-five species were collected, 34 of them from the Big Nemaha River system and 28 from the Little Nemaha River system. These data may be used as a basis for future studies of fish population changes in the Nemaha Basin and possibly as a basis for studies in other watersheds.

Plans by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to channel the Missouri River from Sioux City to Yankton are of great concern to the ecologists interested in this section of the river. The channelization of the last remaining relatively natural sketch of the Missouri River below the main stem reservoirs could prove to be ecologically disastrous. A prototype system has been developed for recording and transmitting digital data at a remote water quality monitoring station in an unattended manner. As many as eight analog signals from transducers, which measure water quality characteristics such as dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, chlorides, conductivity, redox, and turbidity, are converted to digital signals and recorded in binary coded decimal format on magnetic tape. This unit may be contacted from a central station for playback of the day's recording. The transmitted data can be recorded at the central station by teletype. Hydro-meteorological instrumentation concepts are discussed. The necessity for an economic and reliable telemetering system is recognized and ways are shown how to achieve this objective. Particular discussion is given on total-precipitation and water-content-of-snow sensing. A method is also presented showing how to make isohyetal plots of telemetered precipitation information on an x-y plotter by use of a resistance paper method in conjunction with an analog computer.

The decomposition and associated nutrient regeneration of three unialgal cultures and one mixed culture containing an indigenous population of bacteria and microscopic animals were studied under dark, constant temperature laboratory conditions. After periods of nutrient-deficient growth ranging from O to 30 days, these cultures were inoculated with decomposer populations and subjected to anaerobic and aerobic environments for the decomposition studies. The extend of decomposition was determined from the percentage volatile suspended solids and percentage particulate COD remaining after 200 days of decomposition. The average extent of decomposition was greater for aerobic than for anaerobic conditions. However, significant portions of the …

Social well-being is an accepted subset of water investment feasibility criteria. Our attempt is to isolate income redistribution impacts conferred by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation projects. Four project sites have been utilized to yield both pre and post project estimates of farm income and wealth. Production functions of the Cobb-Douglas type were estimated to yield information about factor shares, and thus enable inferences to be made about distribution of total product. Lorenz curves were developed to show changes in distribution of wealth and net income in terms of family enterprise, per acre, and per irrigated acre. Listing of individual …

We have done some work since I spoke to you last on some of the pharmacol¬ogy of SC-12937--which is an axocholesterol the active ingredient of Ornitrol.
