Hydraulic Resistance Of Grass Media On Shallow Overland Flow, David K. Tao, Billy J. Barfield, Austin E. Lyons

Simulated dense vegetation with random blade arrangements and different blade flexibilities were used to determine the hydraulic properties of flow of small, non-submerging depths. With the water flowing among the randomly patterned vegetation blades, drag resistance becomes the dominant force that retards the flow. An equation of flow was established based on the momentum balance in the system. Experimental results were used to determine the coefficient of blade resistance, R_D, and plotted in terms of blade width and flow depth Reynolds number respectively.

Assessment Of The Water Quality In The Salt River Prior To Its Impoundment In Anderson And Spencer Counties, Kentucky, Andrew C. Miller, Louis A. Krumholz, Stuart E. Neff, Darly E. Jennings, Patricia B. Olmes, David S. White

Monthly water samples were taken and analyzed to determine the water quality of the Salt River in Anderson and Spencer counties Kentucky prior to the river's impoundment. Sediments from the area watershed were analyzed to total acid digestion, barium chloride extraction, and aqueous extraction methods. Rainwater and runoff water were collected and analyzed for major cations and anions from two sites in the watershed.

The Salt River at Taylorsville is characterized by hard water with high levels of calcium (33.5-74.8 mg/1), bicarbonate (136-236 mg/l), specific conductance (200-535 μmhos/cm), and sulfate (16.5-71.5 mg/l). Nitrates (0.6-5.7 mg/l), phosphates (0.2-2.4 mg/l), sodium (3.2-20.3 …

The washing of a solute from filter cakes was investigated for both saturated and unsaturated washing conditions. Systems used in this experimental study were 0.065 NaCl solution as the filtrate in an aluminum hydrate filter cake and 0.1 Normal HCL solution as the filtrate in a column packed with glass beads. The filtrate concentration as a function of the flow rate of wash water and of the volume of effluent from the packed bed was measured. The amounts of filtrate removed from the bed during saturated washing, and washing employing repetitive steps of saturation followed by evacuation were compared. Also, …

The Lake Mead Monitoring Program has continued to develop information on the limnological condition of Lake Mead. We have significantly increased our analytical capabilities this year by developing a cooperative project with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and continuing our cooperative program with E.P.A. We also were able to derive significant benefit from the reviews of the Pollution Abatement Project written by Clair Sawyer and Charles Goldman. Partially as a result of these reviews we have had the opportunity to interpret and more fully explain the significance of our work to a wider public audience than would otherwise have been …

The Buffalo River originates in the Ozark plateau in Newton County, Arkansas. This magnificent Ozarkian wilderness river is about 238 km long and flows north-eastward to its confluence with the White River. The Buffalo River drains 3,465 km² and has some 30 named tributaries. In its upper reaches, huge multicolored cliffs extend nearly 213 m above the river as it flows through mountainous countryside which reaches an elevation of 732 m. Within its watershed may be found 700 species of plant life, a habitat for 250 species of birds, and a variety of game animals. In its aquatic habitat …

This study was initiated to determine operational characteristics of runoff control facility components for beef cattle feedlots.

A runoff control facility was designed and constructed for a 3,000 head capacity feedlot in eastern Nebraska. Components of the runoff control facility included debris basins inside the pen and outside the pen, a holding pond, and a disposal system.

Results indicated that design volumes for the debris basins and holding ponds were effective in controlling runoff from the lots caused by snowmelt and rainfall for climatic conditions within eastern Nebraska. Characteristics of runoff transported solids from this large lot compared favorably with …

This study was designed to be a long term ecological study. Effects of nutrient removal through time on productivity is expected to be shown.

As the treatment progresses from primary to secondary, to nitrification, to denitrification, we expect to be able to document corresponding drops in productivity levels.

Commercial plankton were monitored in the vicinity of Florida Power Corporation's Ancolote power plant from January through December, 1976 in order to assess the entrainment potential for ichthyoplankton and planktonic stages of commercially important invertebrates and to estimate the annual standing crop of these organisms.

The purpose of this report is to present commercial plankton data collected at anclote from January through December of 1976. Additional data gathered by Florida Power Corporation and the University of South Florida during 1975 is also discussed. Phytoplankton samples were collected monthly (August 1974-June 1975) at two stations in the Back Bay system of southeastern Virginia. Measurements of phytoplankton productivity and potentially influencing environmental parameters (water and air temperature, turbidity, depth, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen) accompanied sample collections. A total of 106 phytoplankton species, representing six algal divisions and 54 genera were identified. Cyanophyta species were dominant at both stations in the warmer months of August, September, October, and June, and in April at one station only. In all remaining months, Chlorophyta species were dominant, indicating a seasonal shift in phytoplankton composition during winter and spring. The …

An Investigation Of Using Derivation Reaction Gas Chromatography To Measure Anionic Water Quality Parameters, Richard H. Hanson

A new analytical method has been developed which provides researchers with another way to measure orthophosphate content in aqueous samples. The reaction gas chromatographic system was capable of analyzing orthophosphate in the range from 0.25 - 5.0 micrograms of P in 50 microliters of aqueous sample. Flame ionization proved to be the most successful detector. The primary advantage of this technique was the small volume of sample required.

The Southern Nevada Water Project, a water supply system for the Las Vegas area, was authorized by the Acts of October 22, 1965, and July 19, 1966 (Public Laws 89-292 and 89-510). These acts authorized staged development. The first stage, completed in 1971, consists of intake facilities at Lake Mead, eight pumping plants, a main aqueduct 2-1/2-miles long, a 4-mile-long tunnel, and 30 miles of pipelines and laterals. The State of Nevada constructed the Alfred Merritt Smith Water Treatment Facility in conjunction with the first stage. The first stage system has the capacity to deliver 132,200 acre-feet per year.

Samples for water quality analyses and phycological studies were taken from the nine standard sampling locations on the Buffalo River nine times during the period from March 1976 through February 1977. The April-June 1976 samples represent nearly identical conditions throughout the spring period; therefore, emphasis was placed on taxonomic research. As the early January sample was considered sufficient~y reflective of stable winter conditions, the December and February periods were. used for detailed microscopic examination of the rich and diverse diatom flora that was found in the river this year. The affect of the Anclote Power Station on the plankton community was evaluated by (1) determining differences among stations, (2) comparing results from the post-operational plankton monitoring program, 93) examining any major changes in seasonal cycles from those expected of plankton communities in shallow-water, subtropical estuaries and (4) determining the frequency of occurrence and extent of temperatures known to adversely affect the copepods Acartia tonsa and Oithona spp.

As part of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has required that Florida Power Corporation (FPC) demonstrate that .operation of the Anclote Power Station does not adversely affect the aquatic community of the Anclote River and Anchorage. In response to this requirement FPC initiated the Anclote Post-operational Ecological Monitoring Program and contracted with Westinghouse Environmental Systems Department to conduct the plankton monitoring portion of the program.

Flood retention basins are commonly used in urban areas to reduce the impact of urbanization on downstream flooding. When more than a few acres are developed, systems of retention basins are often required. A procedure has been developed whereby the optimum (least cost) system of basins can be determined to meet a given downstream flow requirement. The method considers several design options including basins on all subwatersheds, basins on only some of the subwatersheds, basins of various sizes and basins with various stage-discharge characteristics. Lake Mead is a deep, subtropical, moderately productive, desert impoundment with a negative heterograde oxygen profile occurring during; the summer stratification. investigations of the Boulder Basin of Lake Mead by the University of Nevada were initiated in November 1971. The primary objective of the study was to determine what effects industrial and sewage effluent from the Las Vegas metropolitan area, discharged into Las Vegas Bay, have had on the water quality and limnological conditions of Boulder Basin. In light of the growing demand for imported oil, the accelerated offshore development program and the recent series of tanker incidents, many states have enacted, or plan to enact, legislation to protect their coastal lands and waters from oil pollution. The purpose of this paper is to outline present state legislation that deals with controlling oil pollution, and stating how this legislation would coexist with existing and proposed federal legislation and the International Conventions. The results of this study point to areas where state legislation would be useful and where overlapping or unnecessary legislation does exist.

Preliminary Report On A Pleistocene Pond, Garden County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

Discontinuous Pleistocene pond deposits occur along the valley sides of Dankworth Canyon southeast of Lewellen, Nebraska. At one locality the beds exposed in a channel-fill up to six feet thick consist of sand-sized carbonate-rich sediments deposited in alter nating light and dark layers resembling varves. Microscopic examination of disaggregated samples reveals that most of the sediment consists of sand and silt often cemented into tubes. Other components include several kinds of freshwater ostracodes, gastropods, charophyte gyrogonites, and bone-like debris probably from fish.

presented his Report on the Arid Lands of the United States with a More Detailed Account of the Lands of Utah to Secretary of the Interior Carl Schurz. The report was not so much a careful scientific report, but a distillation of Powell's experiences in the arid regions and a compilation of his recommendations. The paper "was less a report than a program - even, some western congressmen would begin to say, a manifesto, a revolution" (Stegner 1962). Stegner wrote:
