Western Water Law in Transition (Summer Conference, June 3-5)

Conference organizers and/or faculty included University of Colorado School of Law professors James N. Corbridge, Jr., Lawrence J. MacDonnell, Richard B. Collins, David H. Getches and Charles F. Wilkinson.

The prior appropriation doctrine has governed the allocation and use of water in the western United States since the 1850s. The shifting nature of water demand is bringing about changes in the traditional legal system. This conference will consider the fundamental principles of the prior appropriation doctrine together with the important new developments in the law now underway throughout the West.

Wood Of Giant Sequoia: Properties And Unique Characteristics, Douglas D. Piirto May 1985

Wood Of Giant Sequoia: Properties And Unique Characteristics, Douglas D. Piirto

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

Wood properties of giant sequoia (Sequoia gigantea [Lindl.] Decne.) were compared with those for other coniferous tree species. Wood properties such as specific gravity, various mechanical properties, extractive content, and decay resistance of young-growth giant sequoia are comparable to or more favorable than those of coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens [D. Don] Endl.). It is recommended that giant sequoia be considered for planting stock in managed production forests to increase future supplies of wood having the characteristics so highly valued in coast redwood and other decay-resistant species

Pollution In The Mediterranean: A Regional Response, Antony O. Heimer May 1985

Pollution In The Mediterranean: A Regional Response, Antony O. Heimer

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Pollution of the Mediterranean Sea has been an issue of significant political, economic and environmental concern for more than a decade. It has more recently become a regional issue with politically diverse coastal states and a wide variety of international agencies implementing cooperative programs of scientific research, education and training, planning, and treaty drafting. Being a regional issue, the pollution problem has facilitated discussions between nations on several levels and governments have found it politically advantageous to use the issue for a variety of purposes. This paper will provide an overview of the Mediterranean pollution problem, covering the nature of the …

The Feasibility Of A Zone Of Peace, P. R. Kendrick May 1985

The Feasibility Of A Zone Of Peace, P. R. Kendrick

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Starting in 1964 there has been a movement to declare the Indian Ocean a "Zone of Peace." In an age when many in the world feel threatened by the potential of nuclear holocaust this is not striking in and of itself. What the Zone of Peace proposal provides is more valuable than the actual resolution. Empirically, it is obvious that nuclear free zones and peace zones have little validity. Historically, the weak have been vanquished by the powerful; their proclaimed neutrality notwithstanding. Consequently, a study of the peace movement in the Indian ocean may be utilized to investigate why proclamations …

Middle Miocene To Recent Stratigraphy And Paleogeography Of Western Nebraska, James B. Swinehart, Vernon L. Souders, H. M. Degraw, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. Apr 1985

Middle Miocene To Recent Stratigraphy And Paleogeography Of Western Nebraska, James B. Swinehart, Vernon L. Souders, H. M. Degraw, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Two generally distinctive suites of sediments occur in western Nebraska, one dominantly volcaniclastic in origin deposited from the Oligocene through Early Miocene, and the other mainly epiclastic in origin deposited from the Middle Miocene through the Holocene. We have combined the epiclastic deposits usually placed in the Hemingford and Ogallala groups into an expanded Ogallala Group and have abandoned the member subdivisions of the Broadwater Formation.
