Roads negatively impact wildlife through habitat fragmentation, loss of habitat connectivity, and wildlife-vehicle collisions, thus road mitigation structures, such as wildlife crossing structures (WCS), wildlife guards (WG), and fencing are commonly used to address this issue all over the world, including in the United States. In South Texas, such structures were built or modified along a State Highway in an effort to address road mortality for the endangered ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) and non-target wildlife species. This study, following Xi Jinping’s ecological civilization philosophy and the two mountains concept, explores pathways for realizing ecological value and mechanisms for ecological GDP in the Yellow River Basin. The research demonstrates that the two mountains concept breaks through the limitations of traditional development paradigms, providing a foundational guide for ecological conservation and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin. The research shows that constructing an ecological asset system and incorporating it into GDP accounting is the key to addressing the challenges of ecological value transformation. “Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets” concept (hereinafter referred to as two mountains concept) serves as the important component for China’s ecological civilization construction, breaking the dilemma of traditional development and environmental protection, and fostering the synergy between economy and ecology. Based on a framework integrating conceptual evolution, institutional construction, and practical implementation, this study examines the three stages: the awakening of paradigm and local breakthroughs during the ice-breaking period (2005–2012), system construction and national promotion in the establishment period (2013–2017), and value transformation and global contribution in the sublimation period (2018–present). As the country with the largest mountainous area in the world, China’s research on two mountains (“lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets”) concept in mountainous sustainable development holds significant theoretical and practical implications for unleashing green productivity, fostering new quality productive forces, and advancing the modernization of harmonious coexistence between humans and mountains. In the new era, the advancement of Chinese path to modernization places new demands on the development of a protected areas system with national parks as the mainstay. In 2007, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) pioneered China’s 2050 science and technology development strategy and roadmap research, published the “Innovation 2050” strategic research series in 2009. The Regional Development Research in China: A Roadmap to 2050 (hereafter referred as to Roadmap) was one of these 19 reports. The notion that “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets” serves as a basis of thinking for embracing ecological civilization in China’s new era. This study makes an effort to define both ecological economization and economic ecologization, identify the typologies, and elaborate on the theoretical logic of interaction between them. Summary

  • Future climate presents conflicting implications for forest biomass. We evaluate how plant hydraulic traits, elevated CO2 levels, warming, and changes in precipitation affect forest primary productivity, evapotranspiration, and the risk of hydraulic failure.
  • We used a dynamic vegetation model with plant hydrodynamics (FATES-HYDRO) to simulate the stand-level responses to future climate changes in a wet tropical forest in Barro Colorado Island, Panama. We calibrated the model by selecting plant trait assemblages that performed well against observations. The inhalation of windblown particulate matter (PM) derived from abandoned uranium mines (AUMs) is a potential environmental health risk to Native American communities that live in proximity to these sites. However, the aeolian transport of metal-bearing PM from AUMs, as a potential exposure pathway, has not been investigated in any detail. In this study, we sampled airborne particulate matter within the Jackpile Mine located on the lands of the Pueblo of Laguna, New Mexico using passive sampling methods to understand the characteristics of dust within the mine site. In order to feed a growing global population, agricultural practices must utilize pesticides to maintain high yields. Responsible use of pesticides should be based on literature confirming their efficacy and safety. When pesticides are not adequately investigated prior to their release, there can be severe consequences. Many highly effective pesticides, such as the class neonicotinoids, were allowed to be used commercially prior to thorough assessment of their environmental risks, resulting in consequences that largely have fallen to the exposed pollinator populations.
