Outdoor Recreation: Promise and Peril in the New West (Summer Conference, June 8-10)
Co-sponsored by the Natural Resources Law Center and the Colorado Bureau of Land Management.
The conference will explore several components of the “promise and peril” of the ongoing outdoor recreation explosion. The conference will begin on the morning of June 8 with a series of introductory presentations designed to place the outdoor recreation movement in a useful historical and socioeconomic context. This material will be followed in the afternoon session by a discussion of environmental impacts of outdoor recreation, recognizing that the diversity and magnitude of impacts is as broad as the industry itself. This discussion will be followed on …

Photoadaptation Rate Of Synechococcus Wh7803 Cultures At Two Iron Concentrations, Jon Daniel Moulton
Photoadaptation Rate Of Synechococcus Wh7803 Cultures At Two Iron Concentrations, Jon Daniel Moulton
Dissertations and Theses
The marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus WH7803 adapts to changes in light intensity by changing its photosynthetic physiology. This work is a study o f the rate o f photoadaptation of Synechococcus WH7803 in laboratory cultures. Cultures were shifted from constant 8 µEm-2s-1 light to constant 80 µEm-2s-1 light, from constant 80 µEm-2s-1 light to 8 µEm-2s-1 light and from different light regimes to a single fluctuating light regime. The response of high iron cultures grown in modified aquil culture medium at 5*10-6M Fe was compared with the …

In October 1995, epidemic “hemorrhagic fever,” without jaundice or renal manifestations, was reported in rural Nicaragua following heavy flooding; 2259 residents were evaluated for nonmalarial febrile illnesses (cumulative incidence, 6.1%) and 15 (0.7%) died with pulmonary hemorrhage. A case-control study found that case-patients were more likely than controls to have ever walked in creeks (matched odds ratio [MOR], 15.0; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.7–132.3), have household rodents (MOR, 10.4; 95% CI, 1.1–97.1), or own dogs with titers ≥ 400 to Leptospira species (MOR, 23.4; 95% CI, 3.6–`). Twenty-six of 51 case-patients had serologic or postmortem evidence of acute leptospirosis. Leptospira …

Inventory Of Sensitive Species And Ecosystems In Utah, Endemic And Rare Plants Of Utah: An Overview Of Their Distribution And Status, Utah Division Of Wildlife Resources
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR), under an agreement with the U.S. Department of the Interior, began work in March 1994 to develop a study plan for a statewide inventory of sensitive species and ecosystems. Activities enumerated in the plan include (1) completing a literature review for vertebrate, invertebrate, and plant species, (2) conducting field studies on sensitive species identified in the plan, and (3) using information obtained from the literature review and field studies to enhance UDWR's central database. UDWR's study plan was approved by the Utah Reclamation Mitigation and Conservation Commission (Mitigation Commission) in February 1995, and …
A Management-Oriented Classification Of Pinyon-Juniper Woodlands Of The Great Basin, Neil E. West, Robin J. Tausch, Paul T. Tueller, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station
A Management-Oriented Classification Of Pinyon-Juniper Woodlands Of The Great Basin, Neil E. West, Robin J. Tausch, Paul T. Tueller, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
Pinyon-juniper woodlands occupy about 18 percent (7.1 million ha, 17.6 million acres) of the land area of the Great Basin (Tueller and others 1979). The associated tree species are found over a wide range of environmental conditions extending from communities representative of the upper fringes of the Mohave Desert to communities found at the lower fringes of high mountain forests. Over this spatial and elevational range, communities associated with pinyon-juniper woodlands are highly variable, with complex distribution and compositional patterns. This variability is due to climatic changes occurring over the last 10,000 years and to variation in current environmental conditions …

The main aim of the document is to present a seires of recommendations to enable effective future management of this resource. The paper provides a brief introduction to the JANSF, followed by an examination of the resource base of the fishery (primary species, stock distribution and stock assessment).
