This assignment introduces students to conceptual models of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and guides them through a structured investigation of their physical and mathematical foundations. Students analyze the recharge–oscillator and delayed–oscillator frameworks, explore how differential equations capture ocean–atmosphere interactions, and evaluate parameter-driven changes in oscillatory behavior. A key component of the work is the guided use of generative AI as a research tool: students employ AI models to locate peer-reviewed literature, interrogate model extensions, and refine their understanding of complex mechanisms, while synthesizing all final explanations in their own words. By blending classical climate modeling with modern AI-supported inquiry, …
A Predictive Model For Multi- Week Respiratory Risk From Red Tide On Florida’S Gulf Coast., Elmer S. Ochaeta
A Predictive Model For Multi- Week Respiratory Risk From Red Tide On Florida’S Gulf Coast., Elmer S. Ochaeta
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
Florida’s Gulf Coast red tide (Karenia brevis) can put toxins into the air, making people cough, irritating the throat, and worsening asthma or other breathing problems especially when winds blow from the ocean toward the beach. Right now, most public updates don’t really help with the question people actually ask when planning a weekend or vacation: “Will going to or close to the beach be risky in the next few weeks?”.
In this project, I build a weekly early warning system that estimates respiratory risk for specific beaches and predicts that risk 2 to 4 weeks ahead. The study covers …

Environmental Risk Assessment Of Textile Waste From Bio-Engineered Fibers In The Fashion Industry, Aayush Pankaj Agarwal, Harshit Soral, Irmak Aktan, Karol Montserrat Gonzalez Saad, Maria Daniela Saa Espinosa, Sheetal Suhas Dhanuka, Yi Yang
Harrisburg University Dissertations and Theses
The global fashion industry generates over 92 million tons of textile waste annually, a figure projected to increase significantly by 2030. Bio-engineered fibers, including bacterial cellulose, mycelium-based leather, and recombinant protein textiles emerge as sustainable alternatives to conventional fibers. Despite their promise, recent evidence suggests that these fibers may pose environmental risks at the end-of-life stage, such as incomplete biodegradation in landfills, microfiber shedding, and chemical leaching from dyes and coatings. The purpose of this study is to examine how these risks are represented through scientific literature, corporate sustainability reports, and policy frameworks, and to identify strategies for integrating risk …

The management of municipal solid waste (MSW) in swiftly urbanizing Philippine cities has emerged as a critical concern in both energy and governance. Dependence on landfills is approaching critical thresholds as disposal sites near saturation, transportation costs escalate, and host communities increasingly resist garbage transfers. In response, this study proposes a comprehensive Waste-to-Energy (WtE) assessment framework that integrates engineering evaluation with policy and stakeholder analysis to support sustainable decision- making.
Using Baguio City as a case study, the framework applies a Triple Bottom Line (TBL) approach to evaluate three waste management scenarios: (1) current landfill-dominated practices, (2) engineered landfill with …

Unsaturated Fatty Acid Oil-Based Microdroplets: A Promising Novel Class Of Microdroplets, Ramiz S. Alejilat
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Droplet-based microfluidics has rapidly advanced numerous fields, including chemistry, biology, materials science, medicine, food science, and cosmetics. In these systems, fluorocarbon oil combined with fluorinated surfactants is the preferred medium for fluid encapsulation, offering exceptional stability and biocompatibility essential for sensitive biological and chemical processes. However, growing concerns about the environmental and biological risks associated with fluorinated chemicals have prompted a search for alternatives.
This study is the first to explore the use of unsaturated fatty acids derived from emu oil for microdroplet formation. We characterized droplet formation based on flow rates and the presence non-fluorinated surfactant at a certain …

Road sediment is an underutilized medium in the investigation of environmental pollution, yet it serves as both a source and sink for a wide array of pollutants. In urban areas especially, contaminants present within road sediment have the potential to pose human health risks depending on the abundance, chemical, and physical nature of these contaminants as well as the duration (i.e. acute or chronic) of exposure. Las Vegas, Nevada is currently one of the fastest growing urban areas in the United States and is therefore a prime location for the investigation of potential environmental contaminants and pollutants in road sediment. …

The Price Of Priorities: How Human Choices Fuel Climate And Ecological Decline, Keisha Hickman
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis examines the ways in which human priorities and behaviors contribute to the escalating climate crisis and ecological systems. We will first analyze the role of social media in shaping public discourse on climate change and critically evaluate the priorities of institutions that have the means to assist in wildlife conservation. Both speak to the current behaviors of humankind prioritizing their own entertainment over meaningful efforts to mitigate climate change and preserve biodiversity. We will then shift to exploring the profound impact of human population growth and its associated activities on other species and ecosystems. Finally, the thesis will …

North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW), the return flow component of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), is a major inter-hemispheric ocean water mass with strong climate effects but the evolution of its source components on million-year timescales is poorly known. Today, two major NADW components that flow southward over volcanic ridges to the east and west of Iceland are associated with distinct contourite drift systems that are forming off the coast of Greenland and on the eastern flank of the Reykjanes (mid-Atlantic) Ridge. Here we provide direct records of the early history of this drift sedimentation based on cores collected …

Indigenous communities in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania (referred to as the northeastern United States) face disproportionate environmental pollution, with mortality rates 60 % higher than their white counterparts –an inequity that extends beyond formal recognition categories. While previous research has revealed pollution from facilities that cause severe health issues in Indigenous communities, broad geographic studies examining the spatial correlation between Environmental Justice (EJ) indicators and Indigenous populations remain limited. This study addresses this gap by examining contamination patterns across the northeastern United States, focusing on Superfund sites, drinking water violations, oil spills, and natural gas releases. Our analysis …

Significant water pollution caused by flooding due to heavy precipitation and extreme weather events has become a considerable problem, and changing weather patterns and sea level rise attributable to global climate change stand to further exacerbate the issue. During heavy precipitation events, combined stormwater and untreated sewage may be diverted to adjacent water bodies via combined sewer overflows (CSOs), resulting in contamination and water pollution that can be harmful to human and environmental health. Though water quality effects of CSO discharges have been studied, the socio-economic aspects of this infrastructure have not received much scientific attention. This study provides an …

Geologic records support a short-lived carbon release, known as the pre-onset excursion (POE), shortly before the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM; ~ 56 Ma). However, the source and pace of the POE carbon release and its relationship to the PETM remain unresolved. Here we show a high-temporal-resolution stratigraphic record spanning the POE and PETM from the eastern Tethys Ocean that documents the evolution of surface ocean carbon cycle, redox and eutrophication, confirming the global nature of the POE. Biomarkers extracted from the sedimentary record indicate a smaller environmental perturbation during the POE than that during the PETM in the eastern Tethys …

Community and Regional Planning Program: Theses
Wetlands provide essential ecological, social, and economic benefits for our society. In the United States, states and tribes play crucial roles in wetland protection, restoration, and management. However, no research has systematically measured state-level wetland planning efforts towards national conservation goals. This study is the first to comprehensively evaluate how state-level Wetland Program Plans (WPPs) align with national missions, particularly the "no-net-loss" of wetlands goal. Our research assesses the EPA-approved state-level WPPs from 42 out of 50 states in the United States during the period from 2015 to 2024. Using a protocol of 30 indicators across five categories, this study …
Molecular Design And Engineering Of Luminophores For Aggregation Induced Electrogenerated Chemiluminescence, Jesy Alka Motchaalangaram
Molecular Design And Engineering Of Luminophores For Aggregation Induced Electrogenerated Chemiluminescence, Jesy Alka Motchaalangaram
Dissertations
Most conventional luminophores produce intense emissions in solutions but suffer from weak emissions or quenching when aggregated in poor solvents due to intermolecular interactions, such as π-π stacking. This phenomenon is known as aggregation caused by quenching (ACQ), limits their applications in their solid state. In contrast, aggregation induced emission (AIE) is a phenomenon in which luminophores are weak- or non-emissive in solution but emit intensively in their aggregated or solid states. AIE has enabled significant advancements in various real-world applications and has inspired new areas of research. The combination of AIE with electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) has resulted in a …

The management of coastal blue carbon ecosystems can contribute to mitigate anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. However, limited information on soil organic carbon (OC) decay rates in tidal marsh, mangrove, and seagrass soils hinders their inclusion in climate strategies and carbon-crediting schemes. Here, we analyzed downcore OC trends in 3761 soil cores from blue carbon ecosystems worldwide. A decrease in OC content with soil depth was measured in 63% of the cores, whereas stable and increasing trends were observed in 22% and 15% of the cores, respectively. Based on 85 profiles where OC decay could be modelled, the OC decay rate …
