Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Shallow bathymetry data constitute the core foundational information underpinning the ecological, resource, and strategic values of island and coastal zones. Satellite-derived bathymetry has evolved into a key technical means for large-scale acquisition of shallow bathymetry information. Focusing on satellite-based lidar bathymetry, optical imaging bathymetry, and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) bathymetry, this study systematically summarizes the core principles, applicable scenarios, technical strengths, and inherent limitations of each technology. It is shown that satellite-derived bathymetry has undergone an evolutionary shift from theoretical construction to practical application, and from single-method, single-data-source approaches to multi-technology, multi-source data fusion frameworks. In the future, to meet …

Internal Logic And Reform Suggestions Of Fiscal And Taxation Policies Supporting Construction Of New Energy System, Junming Zhu, Bofeng Li, Jiali Wang
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Building a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient new energy system is a core strategy for China to achieve its “dual carbon” goals and promote high-quality development. This endeavor involves not only technological innovation in energy production and consumption but also requires guidance and support from the national governance system. As a key instrument of modern national governance, the fiscal and taxation policies serve as a crucial way to guide energy production and consumption, promote technological innovation, and adjust the distribution of interests. In light of the current multidimensional goals of energy transition—particularly the inherent tension between “clean and low-carbon” and …

Market-Oriented Reform In China’S Oil And Gas Industry: Current Dynamics And Strategic Pathways, Min Shi, Yuan Xue, Xunpeng Shi, Dayong Zhang
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
China’s oil and gas market-oriented reform, developed through decades of exploration, has established a structure featuring multi-entity exploration in the upstream, independent operation of the national pipeline network in the midstream, and diversified competition in the downstream. Nevertheless, systemic challenges persist. A highly concentrated supply structure poses risks to energy security, while inadequate competition and limited market openness constrain operational efficiency. The green transition is hampered by insufficient policy coordination and economic viability barriers, and R&D transformation bottlenecks impede technological innovation. Furthermore, regional disparities in public service provision undermine social equity. Resolving these contradictions necessitates a systematic approach to reconfigure …

With the continuous expansion of global maritime activities and the steady advancement of the “maritime power” strategy, marine environmental security has become a top priority for China. In deep-sea areas, various environmental parameters such as temperature, salinity, sound velocity, wave dynamics, internal solitary waves, and nearshore rip currents play a crucial role in navigation safety and underwater equipment operations. Nevertheless, traditional single-parameter forecasting models are no longer sufficient to meet the demands of multi-objective environmental protection. As a result, there is a growing need for a high-resolution, multi-objective forecasting system that integrates basic oceanographic element predictions (such as temperature, salinity, …

Forest aboveground biomass (AGB) density mapping initiatives generally use one of three remote sensing approaches: lidar, radar, or near-nadir multispectral imaging leveraging machine learning methods, or a combination thereof. However, the active instrument record is limited and near-nadir multispectral imaging data are relatively insensitive to canopy physical structure. Multiangle imaging enables annual wall-to-wall mapping with a global record that extends back to 2000 as these data are highly sensitive to forest AGB. This paper describes work to validate estimates in a published annual, wall-to-wall record of forest AGB on a 250 m grid, derived using 672 nm imagery from the …

The location of an orebody known to show regional variability in space is determined only through 3D geological modeling. A reliable 3D orebody model must be obtained to ensure resource efficiency and sustainability in the mining industry. In addition, 3D geological modeling has become indispensable in intelligent mining, smart mining, and mining 4.0. In previous years, explicit methods were widely used for 3D geological modeling. However, the validity of geological models produced with these methods has been debated. It has been understood that they are inadequate in modeling vein-type mineralizations with complex geometry in particular. For this reason, implicit modeling …

When Words Flow Like Water: How The Enbridge Line 3 Pipeline Environmental Impact Statement Failed To Prevent Hydrogeologic Harm In Minnesota, Carly Gutzmann
Journal of Earth and Life Science
For the aquifers of Minnesota, the environmental impact statement (EIS) was a promise of protection that never left the page. An environmental impact statement is meant to be an aid in the decision making process in order to ensure that projects consider potential environmental harms that may occur. However, they are often used instead as another regulatory box to check, rather than as active considerations when planning. As such, a project plan can be flawed from the start—if project developers only consider environmental impacts after they have already put considerable time, effort, and funding into their project as-is, they may …

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] is a major irrigated crop in eastern Nebraska, where recent expansions in irrigated agriculture and projected trends in irrigation demand necessitate thorough investigations of approaches that can optimize its irrigation management. In this study, the AquaCrop model was calibrated and validated using 19 variable irrigation treatments from a five-year field experiment. The model accurately simulated canopy cover, soil water content, and grain yield, with validation normalized root mean square error (nRMSE) of 12%, 7%, and 7%, respectively. The model was subsequently applied to estimate soybean yield and water requirement during a 15-year period (2010–2024) …
