Forage Production From Shrubs On Saline Land, C V. Malcolm
Forage Production From Shrubs On Saline Land, C V. Malcolm
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
In the first volume of the Journal of the Department of Agriculture in the year 1900, the results of experiments at Tulare Experiment Station in California on the growing of Australian saltbushes are reported.
Seed was first sent from Australia by Baron von Mueller in June, 1881. Three species of saltbush (A. semibaccata, A. numularia and A. vesicaria) are all reported to have grown well.
Although C. A. Gardner in 1929 suggested the growing of saltbushes for forage, the earliest and clearest recommendations are those of Teakle and Burvill in 1945.
Early research tended to concentrate mainly on the possibility …

Social Costs And Benefits Of Water Resources Construction, Rabel J. Burdge, K. Sue Johnson
KWRRI Research Reports
This report analyzes and describes the process of relocating individuals and families who must move due to reservoir construction in Kentucky utilizing data collected in previous research. These data come from four separate studies: a study of community attitudes toward reservoir construction (Johnson county where the Paintsville reservoir is to be constructed), interviews with people who are slated for relocation when the Taylorsville reservoir is constructed, and two sets of interviews with people who have already been relocated due to reservoir construction (Cave Run and Carr Fork).
Psychological, social, economic and material costs and benefits associated with forced relocation are …

A Program For Developing Male Chemosterilants For Red-Winged Blackbirds, Joseph L. Guarino, Edward W. Schafer Jr.
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Red-winged Blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) are one of the primary species of birds contributing to agricultural damage throughout the United States. Methods have been developed for reducing the damage they cause to ripening corn (De Grazio et al. 1971; 1972), sprouting corn (Stickley and Guarino, 1972), ripening rice (DeHaven et al. 1971), and windrowed peanuts (Mott et al. 1972). These methods frighten or repel Redwings from crops; however, in some situations, techniques are also needed to manage specific problem-bird populations by reducing their numbers. At present, the primary methods for reducing large numbers of problem birds involve the use of chemical …

A Bibliography On The Red-Winged Blackbird, Noel J. Cutright
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Following the completion of my doctoral dissertation on the Red-winged Blackbird, I decided to compile a bibliography on the species. This bibliography updates and expands the selected bibliography on Redwings prepared by Mealey and Mitchell in 1966. No effort was made to list the many progress and final reports on various aspects of blackbird research issued by the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife. Literature citations follow the Style used in The Journal of Wildlife Management.

The Monk Parakeet In New York, Douglas P. Kibbe, Noel J. Cutright
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Attention was focused on the Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) in New York State in 1971 when the first successful breeding record was documented for the state although Monk Parakeets had been noticed in New York and New Jersey since 1968 (Bull, 1971). Since 1971 awareness of the bird’s potential for becoming an established species in New York has spread through several segments of the state’s populace. This awareness has been created primarily through two articles in the magazine published by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), The Conservationist (Trimm, 1972) (Trimm, 1973); several articles in popular magazines, …

Minimum Cost Design Of Water Distribution Systems, Don J. Wood, C. O. Charles
KWRRI Research Reports
The objective of this study was to develop the analytical tools and procedures for minimum cost design of water distribution systems. Both analog and digital means of carrying out pressure and flow calculations were developed. As a result of this effort, digital programs for pressure and flow calculations in water distribution systems were written and have been widely distributed to practicing engineers. One procedure is based on a direct solution of the basic system equations using a linearization scheme and has several advantages over conventional techniques such as the Hardy Cross method. These include avoiding the need to initially balance …

Effects Of Exercise On Serum Lactate Dehydrogenase Activity Of Catchable-Size Hatchery Rainbow Trout, Salmo Gairdneri, Gerlad T. Klar
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Effects of exercise and the relative condition of exercised fish were viii evaluated for two strains of rainbow trout. Circular tanks fitted with a paddle were used to continuously exercise the fish and a stamina tunnel was used to evaluate the condition of exercised trout. Trout were exercised continuously at one fish-length per second and one-half fish length per second. Serum LDH activity in Shephard-of-the-Hills (Missouri) rainbow trout acclimated to 10 C increased two fold during the first four days of exercise. Serum LDH activity returned to control levels by the tenth day of exercise. Serum LDH activity in Shephard-of-the-Hills …
Reproduction In The Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus Hudsonicus) In Colorado, Richard A. Dolbeer
Reproduction In The Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus Hudsonicus) In Colorado, Richard A. Dolbeer
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Information on reproduction of the red squirrel (Tamiasciumrs hudsonicus) can be gleaned from studies in the northeastern United States (Klugh, 1927; Hamilton, 1939; Layne, 1954) and in western Canada (Miller, 1970; Smith, 1968; Kemp and Keith, 1971; Wood, 1967). However, there is a paucity of information on reproduction from the mountainous regions of the western United States. This paper presents reproductive information on the red squirrel from Colorado and helps fill this void. In addition, the reproductive strategy of red squirrels is briefly compared with that of snowshoe hares.

Mathematical Modeling Of Stream Storage Potential, Hugh M. Jeffus
Mathematical Modeling Of Stream Storage Potential, Hugh M. Jeffus
Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports
Streamflow data from unregulated streams in Arkansas were processed through Moran’s Model for a dam. The process involved calculating a cumulative gamma distribution for each stream as the streamflow values were incremented in units of 0.1 cubic feet per second per square mile of drainage area. This gamma distribution was then used as input for Moran’s Model. The output from Moran's Model includes the probability of the reservoir having zero contents as the size of the reservoir is decreased. The logarithm of the probability of zero contents, 1n PO, versus reservoir size, K, is a straight line of the form …

Captan Toxicity To Fathead Minnows (Pimephales Promelas), Bluegills (Lepomis Macrochirus), And Brook Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis), Roger O. Hermanutz, Leonard H. Mueller, Kenneth D. Kempfert
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
The toxic effects of capt an on survival, growth, and reproduction of fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) and on survival of bluegiIIs (Lepomis macrochirus) and brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) were determined in a flow-through system. In a 45-week exposure of fathead minnows, survival and growth were adversely affected at 39.5 μLg/Iiter. Adverse effects on spawning were suspected but not statisticaIly demonstrated at 39.5 and 16.5 μLg/Iiter. The maximum acceptable toxicant concentration (MATC), based on survival and growth, lies between 39.5 and 16.5 μLg/liter. The lethal threshold concentration (LTC) derived from acute exposures was 64 μLg/liter, …
Preliminary Interpretations Of Coyote Population Mechanics With Some Management Implications, Frederick F. Knowlton
Preliminary Interpretations Of Coyote Population Mechanics With Some Management Implications, Frederick F. Knowlton
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
The need for control of coyote (Canis latrans) depredations and a simultaneous demand for recognition of the aesthetic and ecologic values of the species create a conflict in resource utilization that should be resolved through more intensive management. A coyote population model is proposed from current estimates of density, reproduction, population structure, and mobility. Densities of 0.5 to 1.0 coyote per square mile are frequently suggested, with occasional estimates of 4.0 or more per square mile. Reproductive rates fluctuate as functions of the proportion of females that ovulate, the average number of ova shed, and in utero viabilities. …
Modification Of A Continuous Ice Crystal Replicator, Paul D. Thornley
Modification Of A Continuous Ice Crystal Replicator, Paul D. Thornley
Reports
A continuous ice-crystal replicator was modified by the addition of a gear drive to the cating wheel. This modification utilizes a positive drive force on the coating wheel rather than the friction force between the coating wheel and the film. The coating wheel operates successfully for at least 12 hours without slippage or damage to the film. Studies have uncovered several deficiencies in the replicator design which could be corrected. The correction of these deficiencies would lead to an improved quality of ice-crystal replicas. The need for continued studies in the fluid properties of Formvar solution is pointed out. Information …
A Streamflow Simulation Model For A Semi-Arid Region, Adnan A. Saad, L. Douglas James
A Streamflow Simulation Model For A Semi-Arid Region, Adnan A. Saad, L. Douglas James
Reports
A streamflow simulation model which would reproduce the essential feature of the hydrologic regime of a semi-arid region, in this case Jordan, was developmed and described. The model is intended to fit conditions which exist in such a region. The hydrologic processes components which represent the evaporation and the base flow distinguish the Jordan model from others. Development of each function of the model and its constants was based on all the minimal amount of data available. one year of data was used to calibrate the model for Wadi Zerqa watershed. The model was then applied to simualte four years …
