The Sustainability Institute Publications

Sustainable food systems education (SFSE) is rapidly advancing to meet the need for developing future professionals who are capable of effective decision-making regarding agriculture, food, nutrition, consumption, and waste in a complex world. Equity, particularly racial equity and its intersectional links with other inequities, should play a central role in efforts to advance SFSE given the harmful social and environmental externalities of food systems and ongoing oppression and systemic inequities such as lack of food access faced by racialized and/or marginalized populations. However, few institutional and intra-disciplinary resources exist on how to engage students in discussion about equity and related …

Characterization Of Cdom In The Elkhorn Slough Estuary Using Eem Spectroscopy And Its Potential For Macrophyte Monitoring, María Vila Duplá

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The Elkhorn Slough estuary is an upwelling-influenced system located in Monterey Bay, California. It is of great ecological importance, as it provides essential habitat to over 750 species, and is one of the largest estuaries in California. The sources and distribution of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (cDOM) in Elkhorn Slough are strongly influenced by geochemical processes linked to the transition between sea and continent, and to anthropogenic activity from adjacent lands. In 2016, water samples were collected from across the Elkhorn Slough estuary to assess the sources and spatial dynamics of cDOM and its components throughout the system. Using EEM …

We consider the opportunities and challenges associated with organizing a conference online, using a case study of a medium-sized (approx. 400 participants) international conference held virtually in August 2020. In addition, we present quantifiable evidence of the participants’ experience using the results from an online post-conference questionnaire. Although the virtual meeting was not able to replicate the in-person experience in some aspects (e.g. less engagement between participants) the overwhelming majority of respondents found the meeting an enjoyable experience and would join similar events again. Notably, there was a strong desire for future inperson meetings to have at least some online …

A Drone-Based Survey For Large, Basking Freshwater Turtle Species, Amy P. Bogolin, Drew R. Davis, Richard Kline, Abdullah Rahman

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Conservation concerns are increasing for numerous freshwater turtle species, including Pseudemys gorzugi, which has led to a call for more research. However, traditional sampling methodologies are often time consuming, labor intensive, and invasive, restricting the amount of data that can be collected. Biases of traditional sampling methods can further impair the quality of the data collected, and these shortfalls may discourage their use. The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs, drones) for conducting wildlife surveys has recently demonstrated the potential to bridge gaps in data collection by offering a less labor intensive, minimally invasive, and more efficient process. Photographs and …

Expansion-Contraction: Spatial And Temporal Variability In Connectivity In A Stream-Wetland Flow Network, Savannah Fransbergen Oct 2021

Expansion-Contraction: Spatial And Temporal Variability In Connectivity In A Stream-Wetland Flow Network, Savannah Fransbergen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The seasonal expansion and contraction in a stream-wetland flow network is often difficult to characterize due to a lack of accurate mapping products, but proper characterization is important for the management of these resources. A new approach to mapping hydrography, resulting in a Regional Hydrography Dataset (RHD), may offer additional insights not provided by the national standard, the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD). The RHD can be customized to provide seasonal or monthly hydrograph, whereas the NHD is static. We conducted field validation (241 sites) and geospatial analyses to assess the accuracy of these products in the northern Tampa Bay Area. …

Coal Geology & Exploration

Mining activities are bound to produce enormous mine water drainage. Mine water in China shows relatively poor water quality and high cost of water treatment and other problems. Firstly, the main characteristics of mine water quality in China's typical mine areas are clarified in this paper: conventional ions are the main chemical components causing poor mine water quality; mine water has a small proportion of toxic and harmful substances, which is generally better than the quality standard of class Ⅲ groundwater. Secondly, some scientific issues on the formation and evolution of mine water quality are discussed in detail, including the …

Distribution Characteristics And Paleo-Climatic Significance Of Continental Climate-Sensitive Sediments In The Late Cretaceous In China, Bin Xu, Fang Xiang, Shuxia Li Oct 2021

Distribution Characteristics And Paleo-Climatic Significance Of Continental Climate-Sensitive Sediments In The Late Cretaceous In China, Bin Xu, Fang Xiang, Shuxia Li

Coal Geology & Exploration

The Cretaceous is a typical period for studying the greenhouse climate and the earth system interactions, and the world's most extensive terrestrial strata are mainly in East Asia, especially in China. Continental sediments can effectively reflect the paleo-climate change, but the previous studies of the Late Cretaceous paleo-climate, based on the combined characteristics of continental climate-sensitive sediments, were barely found in China. To obtain the Late Cretaceous paleo-climate characteristics of China, the distribution characteristics of different continental climate-sensitive sediment types in the early, middle and Late Cretaceous in China were studied in detail. According to the distribution and combination characteristics …

Remediation Techniques For Cadmium-Contaminated Dredged River Sediments After Land Disposal, Zhang Changsong

Coal Geology & Exploration

The remediation of heavy metal Cd contamination in municipal waste is one of the urgent environmental problems in China. To determine the best Cd pollution remediation technology, this paper investigates the applicability of various cadmium(Cd) remediation techniques in river treatment. These remediation methods are compared and analyzed based on the dredged river sediments after land disposal in a city in East China. Three remediation techniques of stabilization, soil leaching, and phytoremediation, are compared by analyzing the performance of the techniques for Cd-contaminated soil remediation. The experimental results show that the stabilization technique reduced the leaching rate of soil Cd from …

Maize-forage grasses intercropping systems have been increasingly adopted by farmers because of their capacity to recycle nutrients, provide mulch, and add C to soil. However, grasses have been shown to increase nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. Some tropical grasses cause biological nitrification inhibition (BNI) which could mitigate N2O emissions in the maize cycle but the reactions of the N cycle and the microbial changes that explain the N2O emissions are little known in such intercropping systems. With this in mind, we explored intercropping of forage grasses (Brachiaria brizantha and Brachiaria humidicola) with distinct …

Crossing The Great Divide: Bridging The Researcher–Practitioner Gap To Maximize The Utility Of Remote Sensing For Invasive Species Monitoring And Management, Kelsey Parker, Arthur Elmes, Peter Boucher, Richard A. Hallett, John E. Thompson, Zachary Simek, Justin Bowers, Andrew B. Reinmann

Advanced Science Research Center

Invasive species are increasingly present in our ecosystems and pose a threat to the health of forest ecosystems. Practitioners are tasked with locating these invasive species and finding ways to mitigate their spread and impacts, often through costly field surveys. Meanwhile, researchers are developing remote sensing products to detect the changes in vegetation health and structure that are caused by invasive species, which could aid in early detection and monitoring efforts. Although both groups are working towards similar goals and field data are essential for validating RS products, these groups often work independently. In this paper, we, a group of …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The Kimberley marine environment in Western Australia is widely recognised for its outstanding natural features, vast and remote sea and landscapes, and Indigenous cultural significance. To ensure that adequate baseline information is available to understand, monitor and manage this remote and relatively understudied region, scientific exploration was undertaken between 2012 and 2018 as part of the Kimberley Marine Research Program (KMRP). Whilst this program generated significant amounts of new knowledge about the region, important research gaps remain, that if answered, should improve the capacity of managers to conserve the region's values more effectively. Here, we apply established participatory horizon scanning …

Combatting The Effects Of Greenhouse Gas Emissions By Cattle To Decrease Global Warming, Grace Stockmal Oct 2021

Combatting The Effects Of Greenhouse Gas Emissions By Cattle To Decrease Global Warming, Grace Stockmal

D.U.Quark

Greenhouse gases (GHG), specifically methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrous oxide, contribute to eutrophication and global warming. Large amounts of these gases are released by beef and dairy farms. The misconception is how and why greenhouse gases are emitted from cows. It is hypothesized that greenhouse gas emissions from cattle can be reduced through mitigation strategies in beef and dairy production along with farmers’ contributions to their livestock’s emissions. The reduction of emissions and increase in milk production comes from increased activity and care of the cows, including medicating lesions and diseases. It is also concluded that waste management and records …

Evaluating Otter Reintroduction Outcomes Using Genetic Spatial Capture-Recapture Modified For Dendritic Networks, Sean M. Murphy, Jennifer R. Adams, Lisette P. Waits, John J. Cox

Forestry and Natural Resources Faculty Publications

Monitoring the demographics and genetics of reintroduced populations is critical to evaluating reintroduction success, but species ecology and the landscapes that they inhabit often present challenges for accurate assessments. If suitable habitats are restricted to hierarchical dendritic networks, such as river systems, animal movements are typically constrained and may violate assumptions of methods commonly used to estimate demographic parameters. Using genetic detection data collected via fecal sampling at latrines, we demonstrate applicability of the spatial capture–recapture (SCR) network distance function for estimating the size and density of a recently reintroduced North American river otter (Lontra canadensis) population in …
