Grain Sorghum In The Ord Valley : Three Crops A Year?, P J. May Jan 1971

Grain Sorghum In The Ord Valley : Three Crops A Year?, P J. May

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

High temperatures and ample irrigation water allow grain sorghum to be grown throughout the year on the Ord River Irrigation Area, and observations in 1969-70 indicated that it may be possible in this area to produce three crops in one year from one planting, by ratoon cropping.

This article describes the technique and discusses its possibilities on the Ord.

The sorghum midge, one of the worst pests of sorghum, could well make ratoon cropping impossible, but the midge has not yet been seen in this area.

Environmental Changes Produced By Cold-Water Outlets From Three Arkansas Reservoirs, Carl E. Hoffman, Raj V. Kilambi Jan 1971

Environmental Changes Produced By Cold-Water Outlets From Three Arkansas Reservoirs, Carl E. Hoffman, Raj V. Kilambi

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Water qualities of two natural streams (Buffalo and Kings Rivers), one new coId-tailwater (Beaver), and two old coId-tailwaters (Norfork and Bull Shoals) in northwestern Arkansas were studied from July 1965 through October 1968. The essential difference between the old cold-tailwaters and natural streams is a change in water quality which allows the development of a new productive ecological environment. Features which typify the old tailwaters are as follows: (1) relatively homioithermal temperatures; (2) stream beds scoured by strong hydoelectric power generation currents; (3) abundant phytoplankton and benthic macroinvertebrates; and (4) absence of warm water game fishes. Environmental factors characterizing natural …

Impoundment Effects On Water Quality As Reflected In Parasitism Of Reservoir Basses, David A. Becker Jan 1971

Impoundment Effects On Water Quality As Reflected In Parasitism Of Reservoir Basses, David A. Becker

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Our aquatic environments are rapidly becoming useless as natural resources through pollution from various sources. It is therefore necessary for us to further understand the various means which relate to this process. The interrelationships between the physico-chemical and biological water qualities undergo marked changes during the ageing of a reservoir. Eutrophication of these impoundments render them rela-tively useless as natural resources. It thus becomes apparent that we must gain further knowledge of these processes if we are to devise methods for proper reservoir management.

Fisheries Report No 9 - The Fauna And Flora Of Monte Bello Islands, A. A. Burbidge Dr

Fisheries Research Reports

Two visits were made to the Monte Bello Islands in 1970 and 1971.

The aim of the visits was to examine the islands for the presence of native mammals and other fauna, and to explore the possibility of re-establishing fauna now extinct,

The first survey was carried out in conjunction with a more detailed examination of the Dampier Archipelago. The fisheries patrols vessel "Dampier" was used to reach the islands and as a base. Personnel were R. Johnstone (W.A. Museum), E.J. Little and J.D. Harman (crew of the "Dampier"), R.F. Dear and A.A, Burbidge, all from the Department of Fisheries …

Fisheries Report No Vii (7) - Results Of A Biological Survey Of The Millstream Area, A. A. Burbidge Dr

Fisheries Research Reports

Millstream has long been recognised as an unique and outstanding area, both scenically and from a biological aspect. The area of prime interest consists of a series of deep pools in the bed of the Fortescue River (about 15 miles long including Gregory Gorge) and the springs and streams which feed them. Most of the springs are in the sides of the river bed but one of the largest is about 1% miles to the south. This feeds a swift flowing stream running north into the river bed.

The first Europeans to see the area were the exploring party led …

The Flathead Catfish In Unchannelized And Channelized Missouri River, Nebraska, Larry A. Morris, Ralph Langemeier, Arthur Witt Jr. Jan 1971

The Flathead Catfish In Unchannelized And Channelized Missouri River, Nebraska, Larry A. Morris, Ralph Langemeier, Arthur Witt Jr.

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Flathead catfish, Pylodictus olivaris (Rafinesque), were studied in approximately 83.7 km of unchannelized and 67.6 km miles of channelized Missouri River. Growth rates were slower in the unchannelized section than they were in the channelized section. The oldest fish in the unchannelized section was 25 years old, while in the channelized study area the oldest was 10 years. In the pectoral spines of progressively older fish from both sections, enlargement of the lumen obliterated early annuli. Much of the annual increment of growth was accomplished during June, July and August. Males became sexually mature at 3 to 4 years of …

Growing Plants With Salty Water, C V. Malcolm, S. T. Smith Jan 1971

Growing Plants With Salty Water, C V. Malcolm, S. T. Smith

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

LACK of good quality water in many parts of Western Australia often forces people to use salty water for irrigation and gardening.

This article gives some hints on how to reduce salt damage to plants when salty water must be used for irrigation or gardening.

It includes a table of plants which may be irrigated with water of varying degrees of salinity and lists precautions which should be taken for each group.

Anclote Environmental Project Report 1970, Marine Science Institue, University Ofsouth Florida

Reports

A comprehensive environmental study involves lengthy and complex research and this report presents results which are preliminary in nature. The sampling period was limited to the fall (September-November) of 1970 in an area which shows marked seasonality. The results however represent a considerable body of information on the Anclote environment and valuable conclusions can be drawn from them. Included in the reports of each sub-discipline which follow are comments on future objectives, especially those for the coming year.

Anclote Environmental Project Report 1971, Marine Science Institute, University Of South Florida Jan 1971

Anclote Environmental Project Report 1971, Marine Science Institute, University Of South Florida

Reports

The sub-discipline reports which follow represent a considerable body of data on the Anclote environment. In general the results provide additional support for many of the conclusions stated or implied in the Annual Report for 1970 (op. cit.). The considerable diversity and complexity of the Anclote estuary and Anchorage including the major role of the grassbeds is now documented in some detail. The overall results also support previous recommendations concerning power plant construction and design (op. cit.).

Seasonal Movements And Behavior Of Ring-Necked Pheasants In Eastern South Dakota, Arthur V. Carter Jan 1971

Seasonal Movements And Behavior Of Ring-Necked Pheasants In Eastern South Dakota, Arthur V. Carter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Information was gathered on mobility, behavior, and related activities of pheasants from July 1966 to July 1968 by banding and/or marking 160 birds with backtags and radio transmitters. Food was readily available since the winters were mild with little snow. Birds moved less than 1/4 mile from roosting areas to cornfields and weed patches to feed. Numbers of birds dispersing from the study area in spring varied each of the years, but 60 to 70 remained there during the two reproductive seasons. Adult cocks traveled less than 1/4 mile when dispersing-and adult hens moved less than 1/2 mile. Movements by …

Effects Of Chick Stimuli And Dieldrin On Adoptive Behavior Of Penned Hen Pheasants, K. L. Cool Jan 1971

Effects Of Chick Stimuli And Dieldrin On Adoptive Behavior Of Penned Hen Pheasants, K. L. Cool

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Studies to determine the effect of chick stimuli and dieldrin on adoptive behavior of penned hen pheasants were conducted in 1969 and 1970. Results indicated that whether caged hens saw or heard chicks had no effect on adoption or killing of chicks. Hens receiving sound stimuli and sight-and-sound stimuli from chicks responded similarly to hens receiving no stimuli. Sub-lethal doses of dieldrin also had no effect on chick adoption under the conditions of this study. Results demonstrated that non-incubating pheasant hens will adopt and brood orphan chicks. During the 2 years of the study, respectively, 37 and 49 percent of …

Phytoplankton Dynamics Of Two Northern Prairie Lakes And Possible Relations To Dissolved Nutrients, Alan B. Hauber Jan 1971

Phytoplankton Dynamics Of Two Northern Prairie Lakes And Possible Relations To Dissolved Nutrients, Alan B. Hauber

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Phytoplankton populations in Enemy Swim Lake were observed to be quite different. Although these lakes lie within the same geographic area (Coteau des Prairies), major differences in water quality were recorded. The differences in water quality were reflected in the phytoplankton populations and appeared to be influenced by the agricultural practices on the watersheds. Enemy Swim Lake was basically a diatom lake while Lake Herman contained mostly blue-green algae. Genera of algae found in Enemy Swim Lake were: Anabaena, Aphanizomenon, Lyngbya, Pediastrum, Staurastrum, Dinobyron, Asterionella, Fragilaria, Melosira, Stephanodiscus, and Ceratium. All of the above genera occurred in Lake Herman except …

Population Dynamics Of The Mourning Dove In South Dakota, Leslie A. Rice Jan 1971

Population Dynamics Of The Mourning Dove In South Dakota, Leslie A. Rice

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mourning dove bandings in South Dakota totaled 44,842 from 1917 through 1970. Adult bandings totaled 44.4 percent of all bandings while immatures, juveniles, locals, and unknown age were 41.3, 0.8, 12.8, and 0.7 percent, respectively. Recoveries totaled 2.8 percent of the banded population, 2.5 percent from hunting and 0.5 percent from non-hunting. Annual mortality estimates of local (nestling) bandings from 1956-61 were between 54.4 and 64.5 percent. Subsequent adult mortality from local bandings was between 51.0 and 52.4 percent. Mean annuals mortality estimates of flying doves banded from 1964-69 were calculated using composite dynamic, composite time-specific, relative recovery rate, a …
