Winter And Summer Sediment Nutrient Exchange Rates In Hillsborough Bay, Florida, City Of Tampa Department Of Sanitary Sewers

Winter and summer in-situ measurements of sediment oxygen demand (SOD) and nutrient exchange rates (NERs) were taken from sandy and muddy sediments in Hillsborough Bay during 1986. The summer-mud SOD rate of 0.23 g 02/m²/hr was roughly twice the summer-sand, winter-sand and winter-mud SOD rates. In general, nutrient flux rates into the water column were usually greater from mud relative to sand, and during the summer compared to the winter. Reservations in the application of the SOD/NER data and recommendations for future SOD/NER measurements are discussed.

Ecological Assessment, Classification And Management Of Tampa Bay Tidal Creeks, Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council (Tbrpc)

The final product is a detailed restoration and management plan for three minor tributaries in the Tampa Bay watershed and one general application. It is the intent of the Council to implement all elements of the four plans wherever feasible during Developments of Regional Impact (DRI's) and Intergovernmental Coordination and Review (IC&R) reviews and through coordinat.ion with the DNR gill-net license fee habitat restoration program, as well as local government initiatives. The efforts of the Council's Agency on Bay Management will also be critical in implementing the findings and recommendations of this project.

Preliminary Study Of The Seagrasses In Middle Tampa Bay Between Apollo Beach And Simmons Park, Mangrove Systems, Inc.

Comparison of recent (1986) and earlier (1983) aerial photography indicated that an apparent recovery of seagrasses was occurring on the subtidal shelf north of Simmons Park (Ruskin) and south of Apollo Beach, in Middle Tampa Bay (Fig. 1). This was suggested by the numerous circular patches of grass observed on the offshore portions of the shelf. This observation provided the incentive to undertake a preliminary assessment of seagrass species composition, percent cover, and shoot density along transects in this area. This study was a cooperative effort between the Bay Study Program (City of Tampa) and Mangrove Systems, Inc.

Interference Competition In A Heteromyid Community In The Great Basin Of Nevada, Usa, Cliff A. Lemen, Patricia W. Freeman

Removal experiments with three species of heteromyid rodents were performed during two summers in the Great Basin of Nevada, USA. These experiments were designed to determine the importance of interference competition in these species by quantifying the short-term responses to the removal of one or more of the species. Our results indicate that the removal of a large species (Dipodomys merriami) does have a positive effect on a smaller species with a similar diet (Perognathus longimembris). These results and others presented are consistent with a hypothesis of interference competition. However, while there is short-term increase in …

A major effort, costing in the neighborhood of $2 billion, is under way to restore the environmental quality of Boston Harbor. While Boston Harbor is unquestionably one of the most polluted urban estuaries in the world, it is also one of the least understood with respect to the basic physics, chemistry, and biology involved. This information is essential for the purpose of identifying processes that control the transport, effect, and fate of contaminants entering the estuary. The conference chairman was University of Colorado School of Law professor Lawrence J. MacDonnell.

During the past ten years Congress has made the regulation of hazardous waste a priority. This conference focuses on the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, as amended in 1984, and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act.

This conference attracted about 100 registrants from 16 states plus the District of Columbia. John G. Welles, Regional Director for EPA Region 8, presented a luncheon address.

Quantitative measurements were made of the physical and chemical properties of two virgin prairie soils, Crowley and Jay, that remain in their native Arkansas environments and of similar soils that had been tilled extensively. Comparisons were made of soil properties at several depths. When compared with the tilled soils the virgin soils had higher organic matter contents, saturated hydraulic conductivities and water retained at several applied pressures. Bulk densities and hydraulic resistances were lower in the virgin soils. For the Crowley silt loam, values of pH and elemental contents of the virgin soil were higher than those of the tilled …

Meyer and Green (1984) demonstrated the probable inhibition of algal growth potential by heavy metals in upper Beaver Lake. Upper Beaver Lake receives water from three tributaries. One contains a small reservoir and the combined streams receive sewage input. Collections were made approximately monthly at eight sites for the Algal Assay Bottle Test (AABT) and heavy metal analysis. In general, AABT results indicated that the collections above the sewage lnput were phosphorus limited while those below were nitrogen or combined nitrogen and phosphorus limited. The nation's fishery management regime has three primary sets of players: the scientific advisors, the managers, and the fishermen. The advisors include federal agencies, state agencies, universities, regional and interstate bodies, and international bodies. The National Marie Fisheries Service (NMFS) has the lead role as scientific advisor. As used here "management" is defined broadly to include the instructions and funding that the researchers are given. "Fisheries research" is also defined broadly for the purposes of this paper. It means the collection of any biological, economic, or social information which is relevant to fisheries management.

The Effects Of Recreation Specialization And Motivations On The Environmental Setting Preferences Of Backcountry Hikers, Randy J. Virden

This study explored how recreation specialization and different types of motivations were related to environmental settings preferred by backcountry hikers. A questionnaire was developed that measured the level of hiking specialization, desired psychological outcomes, and preferred environmental setting attributes. Questionnaires were mailed to 619 backcountry hikers from three Intermountain West hiking areas; a response rate of 68 percent was attained.

Results of the study revealed significant associations between the level of hiking specialization and the psychological states desired by backcountry hikers. In general, increased hiking specialization served to increase the importance of specific psychological outcomes such as autonomy, exercise, achievement …

The southern Western Australian Shark Working Group was formed to investigate the southern shark fishery and advise the Minister for Fisheries on options for future management. Membership comprised six fishermen from regional professional fishermen's associations and two Fisheries Department officers. The Working Group considered that each shark fisherman obtaining an entitlement should then be restricted in the length of fishing gear he can use and the number of months he can fish. The individual's time and gear entitlement would be approximately that length of gear being used and time spent fishing in a period shortly before the bench mark date. …
