Land Use Patterns In Relation To Lake Water Quality In The Lake Wesserunsett Watershed, Problems In Environmental Science Course (Biology 493), Colby College, Colby Environmental Assessment Team, Colby College
Colby College Watershed Study: Other Area Studies
The Colby Environmental Assessment Team (CEAT) engaged in an extensive data collection and analysis effort from September to December of 2000 to produce a comprehensive evaluation of the ecological health of the Lake Wesserunsett ecosystem. CEAT examined several factors related to lake water quality, including land use within the watershed, the impacts of residential and commercial development, and physical and chemical measurements of the lake itself. Lake water quality was the primary focus of the study due to its predictive value regarding overall watershed function and viability. The accumulation of nutrients in a lake due to surface runoff and erosion …
Oxygen Budget For Lake Ogallala, Kyle D. Hoagland, John C. Holz, Tadd M. Barrow, Richard J. Ruane
Oxygen Budget For Lake Ogallala, Kyle D. Hoagland, John C. Holz, Tadd M. Barrow, Richard J. Ruane
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Lake Ogallala, located below Kingsley Dam which impounds Lake McConaughy in Keith County, Nebraska, is a 260-surface hectare lake with an average depth of approximately eight meters. The lake provides mUltiple uses including a sport fishery and a hydropower and irrigation regulation basin. Since the installation of the hydroelectric generating plant in 1984 (Kingsley Dam was constructed in 1942) and the continued eutrophication of Lake McConaughy, dissolved oxygen concentrations have generally declined in Lake Ogallala. Hypolimnetic withdrawal from Lake McConaughy results in depressed oxygen levels in Lake Ogallala during the mid to latter part of the summer, particularly in certain …

The Spectral Contribution Of Carotenoids To Light Absorption And Reflectance In Green Leaves, Y. Zur, A. A. Gitelson, O. B. Chivkunova, M. N. Merzlyak
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Absorbance and reflectance spectra in the visible and near infrared range of the spectrum, acquired for maple (Acer platanoides L.) leaves were studied. Standard deviation of absorbance spectra showed that in yellow to green leaves, with chlorophyll content at least up to 30 nmol/cm2, there is a spectral feature at 520 nm attributable to carotenoids. Reflectance around 520 nm also correlates closely with carotenoids content in yellow to green leaves. Thus, this spectral feature at 520 nm could be used as a measure of carotenoids content in green leaves and plants.
Breeding Season Demography And Movements Of Eastern Towhees At The Savannah River Site, South Carolina, David G. Krementz, Larkin A. Powell
Breeding Season Demography And Movements Of Eastern Towhees At The Savannah River Site, South Carolina, David G. Krementz, Larkin A. Powell
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
The Eastern Towhee (Pipilo erythrophthalmus) has undergone population declines across much of its range, especially in New England. Despite being a widespread and, at one time, a common species, relatively little is known about its natural history, ecology, or demographics. We conducted baseline research on Eastern Towhees at the Savannah River Site, South Carolina, in 1995 and 1996 to estimate breeding season survival rates, nest success rates, breeding densities, and daily movements. We also were interested in whether towhees had differences in survival and movement rates between young and mature managed pine stands. We found that survival rates during the …
Remote Monitoring Of Selected Ground-Water Dominated Lakes In The Nebraska Sand Hills, David C. Gosselin, Donald C. Rundquist, Stuart K. Mcfeeters
Remote Monitoring Of Selected Ground-Water Dominated Lakes In The Nebraska Sand Hills, David C. Gosselin, Donald C. Rundquist, Stuart K. Mcfeeters
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
The Landsat-Multispectral Scanner (MSS) data were used to measure lake area fluctuations (1972-1989) for 130 groundwater dominated lakes in the Western Lakes Region of the Nebraska Sand Hills. In general, the pattern shown in lake area hydrographs was similar to that for in-situ lake elevations. In-situ lake-elevation data verify that remote monitoring of surface- area fluctuations, even at relatively coarse spatial resolution, is not only practical and useful, but also it elucidates the hydrologic characteristics of groundwater-dominated lakes of the Sand Hills. The apparent differences in behavior between lakes in the northern and southern portions of the study area may …

Process-Oriented Environmental Change Curriculum-Development Workshops, David C. Gosselin, Sherri Lowrey, Steven John Meyer
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
To improve scientific literacy, K-12 educators need to: develop the ability to use and analyze data, incorporate data into their curriculum, and interact with teachers from other disciplines to create interdisciplinary units. A Process-Oriented Environmental Change Education workshop was conducted for eleven interdisciplinary teams, consisting of 21 teachers, in 1997 and 1998. The National Science Standards provided the criteria for the organization of the workshop. Inquiry and interpretation exercises helped to expand scientific knowledge and skills as well as the teachers’ use of technology. We explicitly discussed the uncertainty of science through group discussions and problem-solving activities. More than 85% …

Water Resources Issues In The Arkansas Delta, Kenneth F. Steele
Water Resources Issues In The Arkansas Delta, Kenneth F. Steele
Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports
Despite its location in Northwest Arkansas, the Arkansas Water Resources Center (AWRC) is active state-wide. This fact is underscored by the focus of the Center’s session on "Water Resource Issues in the Arkansas Delta" during its recent joint Conference. Water issues in the Delta include declining water tables, salt water intrusion, and water quality (especially suspended sediment, nitrate and pesticides). Presented papers focused on best management practices for cotton production, economics of on-farm reservoirs, chloride content of irrigation water, and landowner education. The AWRC short course was an excellent one on chemical transport in the vadose zone by Dr. Glenn …
Desert Solitaire: Using Literature To Develop A Sense Of Place And Stewardship Of Wilderness In High School Students, Cindy Lee Falsken Zacks
Desert Solitaire: Using Literature To Develop A Sense Of Place And Stewardship Of Wilderness In High School Students, Cindy Lee Falsken Zacks
Theses Digitization Project
The Desert Solitaire curriculum was designed as a basis for exploring Edward Abbey's book, of the same name, in a high school field ecology class. Students read the book over a period of six weeks during the middle of the school year. Lessons were designed to aid students in exploring their home ecosystem, the Mojave Desert, via comparison with Arches National Monument as described in Desert Solitaire. This exploration fosters in students a sense of place and connection with their home environment. With little alteration, the curriculum can be used by students to examine their own ecosystem, even if it …
Management Of Pest Birds In Urban Environments, Ron J. Johnson
Management Of Pest Birds In Urban Environments, Ron J. Johnson
Other Publications in Wildlife Management
A number of bird species may cause nuisance or damage problems in urban areas. These include European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), house sparrows (Passer domesticus), feral pigeons or rock doves (Columba livia), and others. Recently, increasing numbers of resident Canada geese (Branta canadensis) have resulted in conflicts in urban areas, particularly around golf courses, parks, and developments that have lakes or ponds surrounded by grass. Bird damage management programs are increasingly expected to provide effective solutions in a humane and socially acceptable way. Management approaches and products are affected by clientele preferences and public opinion nationwide, which, along with small markets, …
The Relationship Of Animal Protection Interests To Animal Damage Management: Historic Paths, Contemporary Concerns And The Uncertain Future, John Hadidian
Conservation Biology and Animal Welfare Collection
More than a decade ago Schmidt (1989) called for consideration of animal welfare to become a "firstorder" decision rule in wildlife management concerns, including animal damage control. Although there has been movement in that direction, this clearly has not yet come to pass. This paper takes a brief look at the interests we call animal damage management, animal welfare and protection, animal rights, and environmentalism in order to speculate about their shared concerns and the uncertain future before them. Since animal damage and the management of that damage cannot be abstracted from the environmental context in which they occur, this …

Assessing Interconnections Between Wilderness And Adjacent Lands: The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Utah, Janice L. Thomson, Dawn A. Hartley, Gregory H. Aplet, Peter A. Morton, Usda Forest Service Proceedings
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
Wilderness managers have traditionally managed wilderness lands based on the ecological and social content of wilderness areas. The authors propose a framework to systematically account for the biophysical, socioeconomic, and wildness characteristics of the broader landscape context. The method was applied to the proposed wilderness lands of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in southern Utah. The results illustrate patterns of interdependencies across the landscape. Spatial data demonstrate links between the integrity of proposed wilderness lands and the management of adjacent land units, and links between the economic health of local communities and the management of proposed wilderness and adjacent federal …

First-Year Movements By Juvenile Mexican Spotted Owls In The Canyonlands Of Utah, D. W. Willey, C. Van Riper
Canyonlands Research Bibliography
We studied first-year movements of Mexican Spotted Owls (Strix occidentalis lucida) during natal dispersal in canyonlands of southern Utah. Thirty-one juvenile Mexican Spotted Owls were captured and radiotracked during 1992-95 to examine behavior and conduct experiments related to the onset of natal dispersal. Juvenile Spotted Owls dispersed from their nest areas during September to October each year, with 85% leaving in September. The onset of movements was sudden and juveniles dispersed in varied directions. The median distance from nest area to last observed location was 25.7 km (range = 1.7-92.3 km). Three of 26 juveniles tracked (11%) were alive after …
Agroforestry In The United States: Research And Technology Transfer Needs For The Next Millennium
Agroforestry In The United States: Research And Technology Transfer Needs For The Next Millennium
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
If society's needs and aspirations for forestderived goods, services, and amenities truely are to be met, we must find ways of augmenting traditional forestry by gleaning some portion of these benefits from agricultural lands. For example: windbreaks, riparian forest buffers, hybrid poplar trees, farm woodlots, and grazing/timber systems.
Back To The Garden: The Redemptive Promise Of Sustainable Forestry, 1893-2000, Char Miller
Back To The Garden: The Redemptive Promise Of Sustainable Forestry, 1893-2000, Char Miller
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
As we struggle at the turn of the century to define and implement “sustainable forestry”— the next stage in the evolution of forest management in North America and the world—it is important to realize that its components have strong roots in the forestry profession. This article examines the relationship of forests and forestry with social equity issues during the last century. In the end, the author leaves us with a question: can sustainable forestry as we understand it today lead to conflict resolution? If not, what lies beyond sustainable forestry?
Incorporating Uncertainty Into Management Models For Marine Mammals, Barbara L. Taylor, Paul R. Wade, Douglas P. De Master, Jay Barlow
Incorporating Uncertainty Into Management Models For Marine Mammals, Barbara L. Taylor, Paul R. Wade, Douglas P. De Master, Jay Barlow
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
Good management models and good models for understanding biology differ in basic philosophy. Management models must facilitate management decisions despite large amounts of uncertainty about the managed populations. Such models must be based on parameters that can be estimated readily, must explicitly account for uncertainty, and should be simple to understand and implement. In contrast, biological models are designed to elucidate the workings of biology and should not be constrained by management concerns. We illustrate the need to incorporate uncertainty in management models by reviewing the inadequacy of using standard biological models to manage marine mammals in the United States. …
