Guide To Nebraska’S Wetlands And Their Conservation Needs: Second Edition, 2005, Ted Lagrange Sep 2005

Guide To Nebraska’S Wetlands And Their Conservation Needs: Second Edition, 2005, Ted Lagrange

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

Wetlands — a source of great interest, and at times conflict. Wetlands represent different things to different people. At times they’re viewed as shallow, muddy nuisances while at other times they’re viewed as wonderful, varied and productive assets. This is because wetlands take on many roles as part of a complex and dynamic system. Understanding wetlands and wetland issues requires understanding the complex and varying roles that wetlands can play. To aid in this understanding, this guide defines wetlands, discusses their importance and dynamics, identifies threats and losses, describes conservation programs, and takes an in-depth look at Nebraska’s regional wetland …

Normal Hematologic And Biochemical Values For Prelaying Greater Sage Grouse (Centrocercus Urophasianus) And Their Influence On Chick Survival, Mike R. Dunbar, Michael A. Gregg, John A. Crawford, Mark R. Giordano, Susan J. Tornquist

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Declines in greater sage grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) productivity and population numbers throughout their range demand a better understanding of how nutrition influences sage grouse populations. During March and April 1999–2001, blood samples were collected from 158 female (73 adult, 85 yearling), free-ranging, prelaying, greater sage grouse from an area in northwestern Nevada, USA, and southeastern Oregon, USA. These blood samples were evaluated to establish normal blood values for sage grouse and ascertain if certain blood parameters, as indices of nutrition, are useful for predicting if sage grouse hens would raise at least one chick to 1 August. Results of logistic …

Center for Lakes and Reservoirs Publications and Presentations

Water quality in many Northwest lakes has declined over the past century due, in part, to increased anthropogenic nutrient loading (Edmonson and Lehman, 1981). Under the Clean Water Act, resource managers such as the Washington Department of Ecology, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, and tribes are responsible for restoring and protecting the integrity of these waters. Targets for restoration or criteria for impairment are not well defined, however, and may naturally vary by geology, hydrology, morphometry, and climate.

One way to determine whether lakes are impaired and to identify restoration targets is to assess lake reference conditions (EPA 2000). Reference …

Development Of Micro-Scale And Automated Membrane Extraction Systems For Water Analysis, Xiaoyan Wang Aug 2005

Development Of Micro-Scale And Automated Membrane Extraction Systems For Water Analysis, Xiaoyan Wang

Dissertations

Monitoring of trace level contaminants in water involves the extraction and enrichment of analytes. Over the years several techniques have been developed for this purpose. Currently there is an urgent need for the development of micro-scale extraction techniques that can lead to simple, fast trace analysis. Automated instruments that can be used for continuous, on-line analysis are also important. Membrane extraction can address both these needs, because it can be carried out in a continuous fashion and can also be miniaturized. This research addresses these two aspects of membrane extraction for the next generation of sample preparation.

Micro-Scale Membrane Extraction: …

Effect Of Heavy Metals On Salt March Biota, Kallaya Suntornvongsagul Aug 2005

Effect Of Heavy Metals On Salt March Biota, Kallaya Suntornvongsagul

Dissertations

Environmental restoration of disturbed, degraded and potentially contaminated wetland sites aims for the persistent and sustainable re-establishment of biological communities and important wetland functions. An ecologically informed restoration strategy presupposes some understanding of these system processes, but also of potential impacts on contaminants in the environment for risk assessment, long-term management, and potential cost-effective mitigative measures. In this study, potential effects of moderate heavy metal contamination in sediments of the urban salt marsh Harrier Meadow, NJ, were evaluated on growth performance of the common salt marsh plant S. patens and associated arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) colonizing its roots. Growth performance …

Assessing The Health Of Fringing Salt Marshes Along The Fore River And Its Tributaries, Pamela A. Morgan, Lucas Curci, Cayce Dalton, Jeremy Miller

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Casco Bay has experienced two significant oil spills in recent history - the Tamano Tanker spill in 1972 and the Julie N spill in 1996. In addition, the Fore River and its tributaries have experienced numerous small spills over the years, including the August 2002 fuel oil spill (2,900 gallons) and the April 2003 jet fuel spill (6,000 gallons). The impacts of these spills on the fringing salt marshes that line the edges of the Fore River and its tributaries are not well understood. Are these salt marshes resilient enough to withstand these impacts and still act as healthy marshes …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A Company's Online Health And Safety Training Program By Assessing Its Employees Perceptions And Knowledge., Jo Nell Maynard Mullins Aug 2005

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A Company's Online Health And Safety Training Program By Assessing Its Employees Perceptions And Knowledge., Jo Nell Maynard Mullins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate a company’s online H & S training program. The ABC Company’s online 8-hr HAZWOPER refresher course is based on current OSHA standard topics required for certification and principles flexible to fit site- or task-specific situations and conditions.

An 18-question survey was used to evaluate employee perceptions of online training compared to traditional classroom training. Perceptions were compared by demographic variables (e.g. gender, position, race, age and longevity with the ABC Company), which suggested that only age had an influence on employee response. Fifty-five percent of the employees surveyed preferred online training as compared …

Raptor Strike Avoidance At Seattle-Tacoma International Airport: A Biological Approach, Clifford Anderson, Steve Osmek Aug 2005

Raptor Strike Avoidance At Seattle-Tacoma International Airport: A Biological Approach, Clifford Anderson, Steve Osmek

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 7th (2005)

In June 2001 we initiated a Raptor Strike Avoidance Program to monitor raptor activity and develop a biologically-based approach to reduce raptor densities at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), King County, WA. Weekly surveys established the species, sighting frequencies, and distributions of raptors. Red-tailed Hawks (RTHAs), our most common raptor, occur as both resident and migrant/wintering hawks. We attached colored leg bands, backpack radio-transmitters and wing-tags to 8 of 12 resident RTHAs to identify individuals, locate nests and to assist in defining territories. These adult RTHAs were released onsite with the expectation that they would act as “sentinel” hawks by driving …

The Biological Protection Of The Czech Air Force´S., Milan Žuffa-Kunčo

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 7th (2005)

This contribution compares all known collisions of the Czech Air Force’s aircraft with birds, from 2000 to 2004. In the course of this period we have assayed 122 cases altogether. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been possible to obtain all needed data due to whether objective or subjective reasons. We have got information: * on the collision time in 115 cases (94% of all cases), * on the velocity of aircraft by the collision in 98 cases (80% of all cases), * on the altitude of aircraft by the collision in 105 cases (86% of all cases), * on location of the …

Wildlife Risk Management At Vancouver International Airport, Gary F. Searing Aug 2005

Wildlife Risk Management At Vancouver International Airport, Gary F. Searing

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 7th (2005)

The Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is the second busiest airport in Canada. YVR is located on Sea Island in the Fraser River Estuary - a world-class wintering and staging area for hundreds of thousands of migratory birds. The Fraser Delta supports Canada’s largest wintering populations of waterfowl, shorebirds, and raptors. The large number of aircraft movements and the presence of many birds near YVR pose a wide range of considerable aviation safety hazards. Until the late 1980s when a full-time Wildlife Control Program (WCP) was initiated, YVR had the highest number of bird strikes of any Canadian commercial airport. Although …

Affordable, Real-Time, 3-D Avian Radar Networks For Centralized North American Bird Advisory Systems, Peter Weber, Tim J. Nohara, Sidney A. Gauthreaux Jr. Aug 2005

Affordable, Real-Time, 3-D Avian Radar Networks For Centralized North American Bird Advisory Systems, Peter Weber, Tim J. Nohara, Sidney A. Gauthreaux Jr.

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 7th (2005)

Affordable avian radar systems are being developed for Natural Resource Management (NRM) and bird aircraft strike hazard (BASH) applications. Recently [I], the authors have reported on mobile avian radar system requirements and on a system design that is state-of-the-art. In the present paper, the system design of a single avian radar is expanded in scope to address 3-D avian radar networks. These are essential to fully realize an affordable yet high-performance North American bird advisory system. The proposed avian radar network design includes antenna, transceiver and signal processor designs for the avian radar sensor, network design, sensor integration, and system …

Percentage Of Wildlife Strikes Reported And Species Identified Under A Voluntary Reporting System, Sandra E. Wright, Richard A. Dolbeer Aug 2005

Percentage Of Wildlife Strikes Reported And Species Identified Under A Voluntary Reporting System, Sandra E. Wright, Richard A. Dolbeer

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 7th (2005)

Reporting of wildlife strikes with civil aircraft in the USA is voluntary but strongly encouraged by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) through Advisory Circulars and FAA publications. The National Wildlife Strike Database contained 59,196 strike reports for civil aircraft, 1990-2004. An initial analysis of independent strike data from an eastern USA airport in 1994 indicated that less than 20% of strikes were actually reported to the FAA for inclusion in the National Wildlife Strike Database. To obtain an improved estimate of the percent of strikes reported, we obtained 14 sets of wildlife strike data maintained by three airlines and three …

Efficacy Of Aircraft Mounted Lighting To Reduce Bird Strikes, Scott T. Philibin Aug 2005

Efficacy Of Aircraft Mounted Lighting To Reduce Bird Strikes, Scott T. Philibin

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 7th (2005)

A question has lingered over the Aviation Industry for over 30 years. Can we improve the visibility of aircraft to birds so as to reduce the probability of bird aircraft collisions? At the outset, I want to make clear that reducing bird hazards to aircraft is a comprehensive and systemic problem which can be mitigated in part by active control of causative factors in and around airports. However, aircraft rapidly transition out of the airport boundary in a matter of seconds and are still transitioning miles away from the airport at altitudes where birds may still be commonly found. It …
