Multi-Scale Perspectives On Paddlefish Populations: Implications For Species Conservation And Management, Brenda M. Pracheil
Multi-Scale Perspectives On Paddlefish Populations: Implications For Species Conservation And Management, Brenda M. Pracheil
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The Order of fishes containing paddlefish and sturgeon has been named the most endangered group of organisms on the planet by the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Population trajectories of paddlefish, whose native range is entirely encompassed within the United States of America, are currently unknown, although the IUCN has considered them to have a high extinction risk in the wild. The declaration of the vulnerability of paddlefish to extinction, coupled with the global plight of other sturgeon species create urgency to establish population and species-level population trajectories. Moreover, this declaration creates a great need for swift management …

Current Status And Long-Term Trends In Water Quality And Living Resources In The Virginia Tributaries And Chesapeake Bay Mainstem From 1985 Through 2009, Daniel M. Dauer, Harold G. Marshall, John R. Donat, Michael F. Lane, Suzanne C. Doughten, Frederick A. Hoffman, Raghavendra Kurada
Status and Trends for Virginia Chesapeake Bay
The period prior to the implementation of the Chesapeake Bay Monitoring Program was characterized by a marked decline in the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay. The disappearance of submerged aquatic vegetation in certain regions of the Bay, declines in the abundance of some commercially and recreationally important species, increases in the incidence of low dissolved oxygen events, changes in the Bay's food web, and other ecological problems have been related to the deteriorating water quality (e.g. USEPA, 1982,1983;Officer et al.,1984; Orth and Moore, 1984). The results of concentrated research efforts in the late 1970s and early 1980s stimulated the …

Accelerated Erosion Of Saltmarshes Infested By The Non-Native Burrowing Crustacean Sphaeroma Quoianum, Timothy Mathias Davidson, Catherine E. De Rivera
Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
Lateral erosion of saltmarshes is affected by many abiotic and biotic factors. While abiotic factors are typically regarded as primary drivers of erosion, biotic influences such as burrowing or bioturbating taxa can also extensively modify the physical structure of this marine habitat. Many estuaries on the Pacific coast of North America have been invaded by populations of the burrowing non-native isopod Sphaeroma quoianum, which are thought to exacerbate the erosion of saltmarshes. We conducted a mensurative experiment to examine the relationship between populations of S. quoianum and lateral erosion rate of saltmarshes in Coos Bay, Oregon, USA. After 1 …
Effects Of Hurricane Katrina On Freshwater Fish Assemblages In A Small Coastal Tributary Of Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, Martin O'Connell
Effects Of Hurricane Katrina On Freshwater Fish Assemblages In A Small Coastal Tributary Of Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, Martin O'Connell
Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications
Hurricane Katrina struck southeastern Louisiana on 29 August 2005 and thereby created an opportunity to examine the effects of a catastrophic storm on fish assemblages in a coastal stream. Bayou Lacombe is a small (46.1 river kilometers), primarily freshwater stream that drains into the northeastern portion of Lake Pontchartrain, a large oligohaline estuary located north of New Orleans. In summer 2005 (prior to the hurricane), three upstream and three downstream reaches of Bayou Lacombe were surveyed by electrofishing. These same six reaches were resurveyed in the summer of 2006 to assess the effects of the hurricane on fish assemblages. There …
Solar Radiation Damage To Human Skin Mitochondria, Luciene Zanchetta
Solar Radiation Damage To Human Skin Mitochondria, Luciene Zanchetta
Doctoral
The central objective of this study was to assess solar radiation-induced changes in cellular function, mitochondrial function and mitochondrial DNA to further investigate the role of these energy-dedicated and metabolically essential organelles in the response to the main environmental stressor associated with skin cancer initiation. An in vitro approach was chosen employing the human malignant melanoma (A375) and human amelanotic melanoma (C32) cells and the human spontaneously immortalized keratinocytes (HaCaT). A Q-Sun Solar Simulator was used to expose cells to low-level simulated solar radiation (SSR) as it provides a mimic of solar radiation that is environmentally relevant in the UV …

The spider mite Tetranychus evansi Baker & Pritchard can cause severe damage to tomato crops. The predatory mite Phytoseiulus longipes Evans was recently reported in association with T. evansi in Uruguaiana, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of P. longipes on the population of T. evansi on tomatoes under screenhouse condition. The study consisted on four experiments, in each of which 80 potted plantlets were distributed in two plots of 40 plantlets each. Two weeks later, each plantlet of both plots was infested with eight adult females of T. …
2010 Warbonnet Ranch Botanical Survey, Robert F. Steinauer
2010 Warbonnet Ranch Botanical Survey, Robert F. Steinauer
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
The Nebraska Natural Legacy Project (Schneider et al, 2005), a statewide comprehensive wildlife conservation strategy developed by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC), identified the Pine Ridge and Oglala Grasslands of northwestern Nebraska as “Biologically Unique Landscapes” (BULs). Native plant community and rare plant surveys were conducted on the approximately 8,000-acre privately-owned Warbonnet Ranch. The Ranch occurs within both of the above mentioned BULs and is topographically and geologically diverse. The primary goal of this survey was to document the botanical resources of a well-managed, privately-owned, western Nebraska range and determine its potential for conservation of Nebraska’s biological diversity. …

Understanding, Modeling And Valuing Ecosystem Services, Robert Costanza
Understanding, Modeling And Valuing Ecosystem Services, Robert Costanza
Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series
Ecosystem services (ES) are the direct and indirect contributions of ecosystems (in combination with other inputs) to human well-being. An ES-based approach can assess the trade-offs inherent in managing humans embedded in ecological systems. Evaluating trade-offs requires both an understanding of the biophysical magnitudes of ES changes that result from human actions, as well as an understanding of their impact on human well-being, broadly conceived. This talk discusses the state of the art of ES assessment, valuation, and modeling, including the potential of integrated ecological economic modeling. Valuation is about assessing trade-offs – not necessarily about trades (exchanges) in markets …
Predator Functional Response Changed By Induced Defenses In Prey, Edd Hammill, Owen L. Petchey, Bradley R. Anholt
Predator Functional Response Changed By Induced Defenses In Prey, Edd Hammill, Owen L. Petchey, Bradley R. Anholt
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
Functional responses play a central role in the nature and stability of predator‐prey population dynamics. Here we investigate how induced defenses affect predator functional responses. In experimental communities, prey (Paramecium) expressed two previously undocumented inducible defenses—a speed reduction and a width increase—in response to nonlethal exposure to predatory Stenostomum. Nonlethal exposure also changed the shape of the predator’s functional response from Type II to Type III, consistent with changes in the density dependence of attack rates. Handling times were also affected by prey defenses, increasing at least sixfold. These changes show that induced changes in prey have a real defensive …
