Most enforcement cases involving our laboratory deal with the identification of a blood stain or meat sample which is suspected to be deer. Determining whether it is, indeed, from deer is not difficult. But, if the sample is not deer, exact identification can prove to be a more time consuming and tedious process. To eliminate the need to obtain antiserum for each individual species and aid identification, we undertook an investigation on which species and the extent to which several species may cross react with antisera of some common birds and mammals, especially deer. Deer, cow, and raccoon were selected …

Laboratory Apparatus For Providing Diel Temperature Regimes For Aquatic Animals, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, G. Davis
Laboratory Apparatus For Providing Diel Temperature Regimes For Aquatic Animals, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, G. Davis
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
In studies of the effects of elevated temperature on aquatic organisms, little emphasis has been placed on modeling the fluctuating temperatures to which organisms are exposed in nature. To some extent this may be related to problems of design and maintenance of apparatus for fluctuating temperature control. The complexity of apparatus used to provide cycled temperatures has ranged from manually controlled valves for introducing water of different temperatures into aquariums (Kelso 1972), to a complex and expensive feedback system, regulated by rotating cams, that controls the temperature of influent water (Honeywell Cam Programmer Thermometers, Fort Washington, Pennsylvania). To facilitate studies …
Use Of Stockpods For Nesting By Giant Canada Geese, Paul M. Bultsma
Use Of Stockpods For Nesting By Giant Canada Geese, Paul M. Bultsma
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A study of giant Canada geese (Branta canadensis maxima) nesting on stockponds in western South Dakota was conducted during 1974 and 1975. Analysis of 10 selected variables at nests on natural sites indicated that distance of water below high water level and percent slope from wetland to horizon, contributed the most to the use of the site. Distance from wetland to horizon and disturbance factors were two important variables measured to determine use of artificial nesting structures. First nests were initiated on 1 April 1974 and 8 April 1975. Twenty-five nests (16 percent) were located on artificial nesting structures, and …
Analysis Of Aerial Surveys And Tolerance Of Landowners For A Canada Goose Flock In Northeastern South Dakota, Thomas C. Tacha
Analysis Of Aerial Surveys And Tolerance Of Landowners For A Canada Goose Flock In Northeastern South Dakota, Thomas C. Tacha
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Four hundred rural landowners were interviewed in Day and Marshall counties in South Dakota in 1974 and 1975. These 400 interviews included 200 interviews with landowners living within 6.4 km of the three major summer-fall goose concentration areas and 200 interviews from a random sample of landowners living in the study area. Eighty-six percent of the interviewed landowners indicated that it was a good idea to expand the northeastern South Dakota Canada goose flock from 2,000 to 5,000 birds. Only 6 percent of the landowners had complaints about the geese, despite the fact that 23.5 percent of them had received …

Productivity Of A Resident Giant Canada Goose Flock In Northeastern South Dakota, J. David Hilley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
. A 2-year study (1974-1975) of a resident Canada goose (Branta canadensis maxima) flock is reported. Twenty-four percent of the artificial nest structures (ANS) available were used by nesting geese. Artificial nesting structures, islands, muskrat houses and peninsulas were used by geese as nesting sites. Mean clutch size of completed nests was 5.14 in 1974 and 5.26 in 1975. Mean clutch size was 5.38 on ANS and 4.89 on NNS for the 2-year study. At least one egg hatched in 87 percent of the 283 nests located during the study. Larger clutches had a higher hatchability. Nest success was greater …
Sharp-Tailed Grouse Nesting And Brooding Habitat In Southwestern North Dakota, Stanley C. Kohn
Sharp-Tailed Grouse Nesting And Brooding Habitat In Southwestern North Dakota, Stanley C. Kohn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The habitat of nesting and brooding sharp-tailed grouse (Pedioecetes phasianellus) was studied 1 April to 25 August 1973 and 1974. The objective of the study was to determine the quality and quantity of vegetation at nest and brood locations of sharp-tailed grouse in relation to available vegetation within pastures. Five range sites, lowland draw, rolling grassland, upland grassland, rocky outcropping, and claypan were studied. Thirty-four females were trapped on dancing grounds and equipped with radio transmitters. Seventeen nests were located by monitoring the movements of transmitter-equipped hens and 26 nests were located through use of cable-chain drag. Height of vegetation …
Supply And Demand In Water Planning: Streamflow Estimation And Conservational Water Pricing, D. I. Carey, C. T. Haan
Supply And Demand In Water Planning: Streamflow Estimation And Conservational Water Pricing, D. I. Carey, C. T. Haan
KWRRI Research Reports
Recent studies indicated the need for development of surface water supplies in Kentucky. Rising resource costs make economically efficient reservoir designs increasingly important. This study was undertaken to provide methods in water supply reservoir design that increase system benefits.
Two major factors influencing reservoir design were studied: estimated future streamflow into the reservoir and demands placed on the reservoir. Standard reservoir sizing methods rely on historical streamflow data. This data is frequently limited and uncertainty in required storage estimates may result. To assess the reliability of a design, the use of mathematical models in simulation studies was proposed. Existing stochastic …

Effects Of P.L. 566 Stream Channelization On Wetlands In The Prairie Pothole Region, Ronald E. Erickson
Effects Of P.L. 566 Stream Channelization On Wetlands In The Prairie Pothole Region, Ronald E. Erickson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Wild Rice Creek Watershed project, in North and South Dakota was constructed under authority of the Small Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act (P.L. 83-566 as amended). Structural measures included 24.7 miles of channelization and four floodwater retarding dams. To measure the degree that channelization influenced drainage of prairie wetlands, drainage rates in a channelized tributary were compared to rates in an unchannelized tributary of Wild Rice Creek. Channelization had a direct impact on wetlands by channel drainage reduction of overbank flows, and by providing drainage outlets. Indirect (secondary) wetland losses are believed to have occurred outside of the …

Capability Of Integer Programming Algorithms In Solving Water Resource Planning Problems, Trevor C. Hughes, William J. Grenney, A. Bruce Bishop, Calvin G. Clyde, Rangesan Narayanan, Paul E. Pugner
Reports
The feasibility of optimizing large regional water resource planning problems by means of integer programming algorithms is analyzed. Two types of integer programming models are developed: (1) A water supply model including 23 separate but geographically related community systems; and (2) a river basin water quality model including 15 point sources of wastewater, 4 types of pollutants, 6 surveillance points, and 7 alternative treatment processes. The water supply model was structured as a mixed integer problem (some continuous variables included) while the water quality model was an all integer problem. Four integer programming algorithms were tested on the sample problems …
The Effects Of Boating Upon Lead Concentrations In Fish, David Oates
The Effects Of Boating Upon Lead Concentrations In Fish, David Oates
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
The concentration of lead in fish muscle tissue from lakes where boating is heavy and where it is prohibited was measured. The lead levels ranged from less than 0.05 to 1.35 ppm but did not differ significantly between those in the controlled and non-controlled boating lakes. Lead levels apparently pose no public health hazard.

The Sharp-Tailed Grouse In Nebraska, Leonard Sisson
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
The plains sharp-tailed grouse (Pedioecetes phasianellus jamesii) is one of four species of grouse (Family Tetraonidae) found in Nebraska. The other species are the greater prairie chicken (Tympanuchus cupido pinnatus), sage grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus), and ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus). The plains sharp-tailed grouse is one of six subspecies of Pedioecetes found in North America (Aldrich 1963). Closely related to the sharptail, the greater prairie chicken occupies similar habitat. Although in different genera, the two species hybridize where their ranges overlap Oohnsgard 1968). Because of the similarities, the two species were often confused …

Application Of A Hydrologic Model To The Planning And Design Of Storm Drainage Systems For Urban Areas, George B. Shih, Eugene K. Israelsen, Robert N. Parnell, Jr., J. Paul Riley
Reports
A generally applicable hybrid computer program is developed to simulate runoff from urban watersheds, and is applied to represent the outflow hydrographs of three urban watersheds located within Salt Lake County, Utah. The gaged outflow of the watersheds provided a means for comparing the observed and the simulated final outflow hydrographs. Each of the three watersheds was subdivided into spatial units or subzones, and the outflow hydrographs for each subzone were obtained by abstracting interceptions, infiltration, and depression storage from the rainfall hyetograph of each subzone. The resulting hydrograph outflow of each subzone was routed to the Jordan River, the …

An Economic Appraisal Of Reuse Concepts In Regional Water Supply Planning, Rangesan Narayanan, Bartell C. Jensen, A. Bruce Bishop, Kenneth S. Lyon
Reports
Using a conceptual model of a water supply firm, the necessary conditions for production and market efficiency are derived when renovated wastewater is considered as a potential water resource. The nature and extent of the supply augmentation due to recycled reuse is demonstrated using classical optimization techniques. Three stages of short-run supply corresponding to no recycling, partial recycled reuse and complete recycling of all reclaimable water are identified through appropriate Lagrangian Multipliers as well as graphical techniques. A mathematical programming model is structured to determine the optimal water resource allocation and pricing policy for Salt Lake County. By maximizing the …

Colorado River Basin Modeling Studies: Proceedings Of A Seminar Held At Utah State University Logan , Utah July 16-18, 1975, Calvin G. Clyde, Donna H. Falkenborg, J. Paul Riley
Reports
Preface: Computer modeling is an important and valuable tool for water resources planning and management. In recent years many different modeling approaches and techniques have been developed. Some have been applied in the Colorado River Basin. A brief and incomplete search showed over fifty reports on modeling in the Colorado River Basin alone. The main motivation for this Seminar was the indication that (1) much duplication of effort is occuring among Colorado River modeling studies due to lack of information and (2) much of the knowledge now available on modeling is not being effectively applied to real problems. The overall …
