Calcium Carbonate Precipitation As Influenced By Stream Primary Production, Gretchen L. Rupp, V. Dean Adams
Calcium Carbonate Precipitation As Influenced By Stream Primary Production, Gretchen L. Rupp, V. Dean Adams
Reports
The potential influence of periphyton photosynthesis on calcium carbonate precipitation was studied for the Logan River, Bear River Mountains, northern Utah. The water chemistry, hydrology, and benthic primary production of the river were monitored for one year. periphyton photosynthesis and calcium carbonate precipitation were measured concurrently in laboratory experiments utilizing radioisotopic tracers. These experiments investigated the effects of water temperature, velocity, and macronutrient concentration on photosynthetically induced calcium carbonate precipitation. In these experiments, the biologic induction of calcium carbonate precipitation was not correlated with water nutrient level. It did, however, reflect water temperature, and was greatest at approximately 10 degrees …

The Potential For Groundwater Contamination Along Basin Margins In The Arid West: Alluvial Fans And Lake Features, Calvin G. Clyde, Robert Q. Oaks, Peter T. Kolesar, Edward P. Fisk
Reports
Many towns of the arid west were built upon alluvial fans and upon sites underlain by Pleistocene lake deposits. The objective of this study was to assess the potential impact of these activities of man upon groundwater quality within these geological features. Emphasis was placed on shallow groundwater quality after it was determined that deep groundwater is rarely contaminated at such sites. A reconnaissance of Utah and Nevada was made and four sites underlain by alluvial fans (Willard, Manti, Elsinore, and Spring City) and four sites underlain by lake shore deposits (Hyde Park, Fielding, Providence and Richmond) were selected in …

The Quality Outdoor Recreation Component In Multi-Purpose Conservation Areas: A User Assessment Devised, And Applied To Pinehurst Lake Conservation Area, Gerald Carl Thomas
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Recreational demand for out-of-doors space and facilities continues to increase into the 1980’s. Accordingly, multi-purpose conservation areas, by the nature of their designations, require ongoing assessment of the attributes which determine the quality of the recreational experience they afford.
A problem with the master planning process for these multi-use areas is that in the past, little or no consideration has been given to user-recreationist input in the development stages of the master plans. The purpose of this study is to devise a method of assessing user satisfaction towards the recreational quality available at multi-use conservation areas, and to show how …

This manual contains detailed descriptions of biological, chemical and physical sampling and analytical procedures used at the Lake Mead Limnological Research Center. The manual was prepared in response to requests made by numerous individuals involved in the Las Vegas Valley Water Quality Program. This manual represents what we consider to be a reasonably complete compilation of methods useful in studying both general and specific limnological questions. While each section is sufficiently detailed to be of use to investigators with little experience in limnological methodology, the methods can be used on a wide variety of lakes and reservoirs, with relatively little …

Ratepayer Financing Of Solar Thermal Electric Commercial Demonstration Projects, Mark D. Jarmie, Jeff V. Conopask
Ratepayer Financing Of Solar Thermal Electric Commercial Demonstration Projects, Mark D. Jarmie, Jeff V. Conopask
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
Commercialization of a new energy supply technology requires demonstration of its feasibility to potential customers at each staqe of development. While small improvements of proven energy supply svstems are usually privately pioneered, larger or more uniaue research projects are often delaved as economic and technical concerns are assuaged through public sector R&D funding. For solar thermal central receivers, even though their technical viability has been tested on a small scale, acceptance by utilities will require full-scale field experiments and commercial-sized demonstration plants.

The Gloom Gets Doomier, David A. Summers
The Gloom Gets Doomier, David A. Summers
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
This paper reviews the likely sources of energy in the year 1990. Economic conditions, difficult to forecast, affect short-term consumption, while technological breakthroughs, equally impossible to predict, will control long-term production of energy. For the ten-year period, however, commitments to construction, or feasibility studies, must already be in hand. This allows a prediction of the energy supply for that year, and such a prediction is made. Because this indicates that only about 1 percent growth in supply can occur over this time period, against a requirement for at least 2 percent, the forecast is doomier than it was in earlier …

The Economics Of Metals Recovery From Power Plant Fly Ash Via The Ames Hichlor Process, S. J. Weiss, G. Burnet, C. Y. Chang
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
The disposal of potentially hazardous coal wastes is becoming a significant problem for the payer industry. The Ames HiChlor process, which utilizes paver plant fly ash as a source of aluminun, is proposed as a method of coal waste utilization. In the HiChlor process fly ash is chlorinated in the presence of a carbonaceous reduct ant at 700 to 900°C to produce alumnum chloride and titaniun tetrachloride as salable products. An economic analysis for a plant vhich would process 6,000 tons per day of fly ash is presented. Conditions under which the proposed process will prove profitable are discussed.

Cogeneration Of Ethanol From I.C. Engine Powerplants: An Economical And Convenient Method To Supply Process Energy For Ethanol Production, Randall Noon
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
I.C. engine power plants have significant and suitable waste heat for the production of ethanol. Such power plants are often located in conjunction with cattle and grain producing areas, two of the important ingredients for ethanol production. Cogeneration of ethanol from I.C. engines will afford significant production of ethanol without requiring more fuel than is currently used.
Agri-Fuel Potentials Of Butanol/Acetone Production: An Alternative To Ethanol For A Gasoline Substitute, Randall Noon
Agri-Fuel Potentials Of Butanol/Acetone Production: An Alternative To Ethanol For A Gasoline Substitute, Randall Noon
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
Butanol and acetone can be produced via a fermentation process similar to ethanol. Whereas ethanol fuels require strict observance of federal and state alcohol laws, butanol and acetone are not so regulated. These and other advantages may make the production of butanol/acetone fuels an alternative choice for a gasoline substitute.

Managing In An Energy Scarce Environment, John Amos
Managing In An Energy Scarce Environment, John Amos
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
Present engineering management principles, operations research techniques, and economic theories were mainly developed dealing with only one scarce resource -- capital. Today, the engineer manager must consider another scarce resource -- energy. In the past, energy was never considered a major factor; i.e., equipment was considered a good investment if labor was reduced, regardless of energy cost. Many other managerial decisions are similar; therefore, the engineer manager must understand why many decisions based on traditional techniques may be misleading. The engineer manager must now utilize more complex engineering management techniques instead of evaluating only one factor or using rules of …
The Regulatory Nemesis, K. Daniel Hinkle
The Regulatory Nemesis, K. Daniel Hinkle
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
Energy sources are truly regulated from the bowels of the earth to the flame tip. Local, state and federal governments, whether by design or blind ineptitude, have created a maze of administrative regulations that affect the development of both current and future energy sources. Rather than discuss regulatory horror stories, it is the purpose of this paper to discuss the impacts of this maze of regulations on current and alternate energy sources.
The first section will review 16 federal acts that make up the regulatory nemesis. The second section will review an example of the maze in action on a …

Use Of Ailerons To Improve Control Of Large Wind Turbines, Melvin H. Snyder, W. H. Wentz Jr., John T. Calhoun
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
Studies have been conducted to determine feasibility of using aileron or spoiler controls as alternates to pitch control for large horizontal axis wind turbines. Results of the study show that either ailerons or spoilers can provide control necessary to limit turbine power in high wind conditions. An aileron system is recommended for the present application, based upon the ability of ailerons to provide self-starting and added power at low wind speed conditions.
The Energy Conservation And Safety Dilemma, Burns E. Hegler
The Energy Conservation And Safety Dilemma, Burns E. Hegler
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
Since the beginning of the energy crisis, efforts to conserve energy often have seemed to be diametrically opposed to the precepts of safety. This is true if conservation is not planned and conducted properly. However, energy and safety can be quite compatible and may work to their mutual advantage if effectively managed.
Correlation Of Bus Ridership With The Trend Of Gasoline Price In A Major Metropolitan Area, Andrew D. Jones, Braja M. Das

This has been correlated with increasing trend of the price of gasoline. Although the study presented is for a short duration, it reflects a general trend of slow but definitely encouraging public awareness for the conservation of energy.
Limitations Of Underground Building As An Energy Alternative, A. M. Hanna, N. Evans
Limitations Of Underground Building As An Energy Alternative, A. M. Hanna, N. Evans
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
Building underground offers a potential for a reduction in heating and cooling loads, in comparison to a similar above ground structure. The resulting energy savings over the life of the structure will be beneficial, both in terms of dollars, and in conservation of resources. However, this mode of construction is subject to technical and economic limitations. The limitations, as well as the potential energy saving processes of underground construction, are discussed with special emphasis placed on the soil properties, structural design and construction techniques... which may unfavourably affect the potential energy savings.
