The Glory Trail: The Great American Migration And Its Impact On Natural Resources, Ernest Swift Jan 1958

The Glory Trail: The Great American Migration And Its Impact On Natural Resources, Ernest Swift

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

Surprisingly few Americans have any definitive or comprehensive knowledge of the history of their country, although many are under the delusion that their school book history taught them all they needed to know.

They were indoctrinated with a smattering of dates which included the voyage of Columbus and the landing of the pilgrims at Plymouth. They learned what Priscilla said to John Alden, gloated over the Boston Tea Party and memorized part of Patrick Henry's speech; they were briefed on Bunker Hill, Washington crossing the Delaware and the Surrender of Cornwallis. And that just about completed that era.

Daniel Roone's …

2. An Agricultural Revolution, Robert L. Bloom, Basil L. Crapster, Harold L. Dunkelberger, Charles H. Glatfelter, Richard T. Mara, Norman E. Richardson, W. Richard Schubart

Section XIV: The Industrial Revolution, Classical Economics, and Economic Liberalism

While capitalism was making rapid strides toward dominating English industry, changes were taking place in agriculture which made it more efficient and productive, and which prepared it to be fitted eventually into the industrial capitalistic pattern. Actually, changes in the direction had been occurring in English agriculture since the revival of trade discussed in earlier chapters. [excerpt]

Age And Growth Determination Of The Black Bullhead From Soft Fin Rays, James W. Sprague Jan 1958

Age And Growth Determination Of The Black Bullhead From Soft Fin Rays, James W. Sprague

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Knowledge of the age of individuals comprising populations of fish is essential to the fishery biologist. From such information he is able to calculate the rate of growth, determine the age at which sexual maturity is attained and the longevity of the species. These calculations and determinations can be applied in the management of populations and in setting fishery regulations. There are numerous methods being used to determine the age of an individual fish. Of these, the scale method is the most important means of age determination being utilized with species of fish possessing scales (Cooper, 1951). This method …

Evaluation Of Walleye Fingerling Plants In Lake Darling, North Dakota, George L. Van Wyhe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The walleye, Stizostadion vitreum vitreum (Mitchell) is the largest American member of the perch family (Peraidae); it represents the subfamily Luciopercinae in our waters. The walleye has a wide range of distribution which, according to hubs and lagler (1949), extends “From Great Slave Lake, the Saskatchewan River system and the Hudson Bay region to Labrador; southward on the Atlantic slope to North Carolina, and west of the mountains, to the Alabama River system of Georgia to the Tennessee River drainage of Alabama and to northern Arkansas and Nebraska. Common through the Great Lakes and many of the inland lakes and …

Field Techniques For Sexing And Aging Game Animals, Donald R. Thompson Jan 1958

Field Techniques For Sexing And Aging Game Animals, Donald R. Thompson

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

The purpose of this booklet is to provide a ready field reference for identification, sexing and aging of common game species. It has purposely been kept in simplified form, presenting only those techniques which can commonly be applied in the field and avoiding those which would require special equipment and skills. Untrained personnel should be given demonstrations of the techniques, and thereafter this reference should serve as a reminder. It is not expected that the reference could successfully be used without such demonstration. Certain of the techniques such as cloaca! examination of waterfowl may require considerable practice by the individual. …

Industrial Wastes: Bio-Assays For Control Of Industrial Effluents, Croswell Henderson, Clarence M. Tarzwell Sep 1957

Industrial Wastes: Bio-Assays For Control Of Industrial Effluents, Croswell Henderson, Clarence M. Tarzwell

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Waste effluents from many industries are toxic to fish and other aquatic life. The control or treatment of these wastes for safe release into receiving waters presents a problem of consider able magnitude.

Much effort has been expended by some industries to solve this problem, primarily through chemical analysis for possible toxic components and then generally by a search of the literature to find out how toxic a particular component may be. Unfortunately, this approach has not been successful, nor can it be expected to be productive of satisfactory answers.

The Use Of Branchiostegal Rays To Determine Age Of Lake Trout Salvelinus Namaycush Walbaum, Ross Vivian Bulkley May 1957

The Use Of Branchiostegal Rays To Determine Age Of Lake Trout Salvelinus Namaycush Walbaum, Ross Vivian Bulkley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Any method used in aging fish must fulfill certain requirements to be satisfactory. If the method is inaccurate, naturally little reliance can be placed upon its use. If considerable study of the method and much practice are required before accurate readings can be obtained, the method will not come into widespread use. The requirements of an aging method, then are that it must be accurate and comparatively easy. The scale method for aging lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush Walbaum) unfortunately does not fulfill these requirements. It has always been difficult to tell the age of lake trout by the examination …

Thing We Need To Do, Mel Steen Jan 1957

Thing We Need To Do, Mel Steen

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

Nebraska has great need to preserve and develop her wildlife and recreational resources. We have reached that paint in our history when we can no longer rely on yesterday's measures in this field. For our own social and economic good, we must now do things we have hereto considered unnecessary.

We face problems that a few years ago were unknown. The complexity and rapid growth of modern civilization, a civilization that has reached heights never before attained by man, create new and growing problems on the wildlife and recreational front. We have great need to preserve that which we have, …

Biological Indices Of Water Pollution, With Special Reference To Fish Populations, Peter Doudoroff, Charles E. Warren Jan 1957

Biological Indices Of Water Pollution, With Special Reference To Fish Populations, Peter Doudoroff, Charles E. Warren

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

A number of investigators have very recently published discussions having to do with biological indices and biological measures of water pollution (1) (2) (7) (13) (14) (15) (16) (26) (27) (28) (29) (30) (36) (38). Fjerdingstad (12) has discussed some of the pertinent European literature. The fundamental concepts presented by these authors are not original, for the idea that aquatic organisms can be useful "indicators" of environmental conditions, and particularly of the degree of pollution of water with organic wastes, has a long history (12). Because of certain novel features and the relatively wide scope of the studies, and the …

Nebraska Deer, William Bailey Jr., George Schildman, Phillip Agee, C. G. Pritchard Jan 1957

Nebraska Deer, William Bailey Jr., George Schildman, Phillip Agee, C. G. Pritchard

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

IN COMMON with the experience of most states, Nebraska's deer herds were reduced to a very low level by excessive harvests in our early history. Most American big-game animals were overharvested in the early history of this nation because of commercialization. Buffalo were killed for their hides, deer for their meat. This slaughter continued as long as the hunter (or poacher) could sell his take at a profit. Modem game management and public opinion reversed this trend. Deer are on the way back all over America, and in some states the protection-complex was so strong that deer were restored to …

Range Liverstock Nutrition And Its Importance In The Intermountain Region, C. Wayne Cook Dec 1956

Range Liverstock Nutrition And Its Importance In The Intermountain Region, C. Wayne Cook

Faculty Honor Lectures

It has been estimated that about 728 million acres or about 76 percent of the entire land area in the West is used for grazing (Stoddard and Smith 1956). In Utah about 93 percent of the land area or 48,900,000 acres is considered range land (Reuss and Blanch 1951). Although some of this range land is forested, a large area of it can be used only for grazing. Therefore, range livestock production is an important segment of western agriculture.

Before 19'00 most of the animals in the West grazed on the range all year. However, irrigation crop production has expanded …
