Uranium Transport In The Walker River Basin, California And Nevada, Larry Benson, D. L. Leach Jan 1979

Uranium Transport In The Walker River Basin, California And Nevada, Larry Benson, D. L. Leach

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

During the summer of 1976 waters from tributaries, rivers, springs and wells were sampled in the Walker River Basin. Snow and sediments from selected sites were also sampled. All samples were analyzed for uranium and other elements. The resulting data provide an understanding of the transport of uranium within a closed hydrologic basin as well as providing a basis for the design of geochemical reconnaissance studies for the Basin and Range Province of the Western United States. Spring and tributary data are useful in locating areas containing anomalous concentrations of uranium. However, agricultural practices obscure the presence of known uranium …

Differentiation Of White-Tailed And Mule Deer Blood And Tissue By Isoelectric Focusing, David Oates, Ken Pearson, Nancy Dent Jan 1979

Differentiation Of White-Tailed And Mule Deer Blood And Tissue By Isoelectric Focusing, David Oates, Ken Pearson, Nancy Dent

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Blood and tissue samples from 66 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginanus) and 69 mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) were examined by isoelectric focusing on polyacrylamide gel slabs in the pH range 6-9. Blood was differentiated via a general protein stain. Tissue differentiation required use of esterase patterns rather than general protein patterns. Esterase patterns of white-tailed and mule deer tissue differed considerably from each other in both number and location of esterase bands. Protein patterns for blood were not as distinctive as the esterase patterns were for tissue, but white-tailed and mule deer could still be differentiated from …

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Some possibilities for reclamation of saltland.

The Causes Of Saltland : A Case Study At Esperance, P R. George, S. C. Bull Jan 1979

The Causes Of Saltland : A Case Study At Esperance, P R. George, S. C. Bull

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

A series of bores on the Esperance Downs Research Station has demonstrated that the groundwater levels change after clearing, and the relatiojnnship between groundwater levels and soil salinity has been emphasised. This pattern of hydrological change leading to soil salinity problems applies widely in the wheatbelt.

A Forest Kingdom Unlike Any Other, Kurt F. Ruppel Jan 1979

A Forest Kingdom Unlike Any Other, Kurt F. Ruppel

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Olympic National Park (ONP), a natural area 15% larger than Rhode Island, located on the Olympic Peninsula in northwestern Washington State, is a land of diverse contrasts and impressive beauty. It is also a land rich in natural resources (e.g. timber, water power, and recreational potential) that are strongly coveted by man. This dichotomy has led to a number of conflicts during the past hundred years over the policies directing the control, management, and use of this area. It is the purpose of this paper to examine the factors that have shaped that policy and to follow the changes that …

Random Differential Equations In Water Quality Modeling, Brad A. Finney, David S. Bowles, Michael P. Windham Jan 1979

Random Differential Equations In Water Quality Modeling, Brad A. Finney, David S. Bowles, Michael P. Windham

Reports

A probabilistic river water quality model is developed with the capability of determinging the joint and marginal probability density function of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and dissolved oxygen (DO) at any point in a river. The one dimensional steady-state model can be applied to a river system with any reasonable number of point loads and diversions and lateral surface and subsurface inflow. The model can simultaneously consider randomness in the intital conditions, inputs, and coefficients of the water quality equations. Any empirical or known distribution can be used for the initial condition. The randomness in the water quality equation inputs …

Modeling The Performance Of The Intermittent Sand Filter, P. A. Cowan, E. J. Middlebrooks Jan 1979

Modeling The Performance Of The Intermittent Sand Filter, P. A. Cowan, E. J. Middlebrooks

Reports

Several models were developed to predict the efficiency of the intermittent sand filter (ISF) in removing algae from wastewater stabilization pond effluent; volatile suspended solids (VSS) was the analytical technique used to identify algal concentrations. The first (ISF model) and second (modified ISF model) models consisted of two distinct portions: a surface algal layer (SAL) component and a sand phase component. In the ISF model, the sand phase component was described in terms of 20 empirical sand filter efficiency terms (20 ^ coefficients); in the modified ISF model, a functional relationship between ^ and filter depth was developed. The modified …

A Mathematical Hydrodynamic Circulation Model Of Great Salt Lake For Resource Management, Gary Z. Watters, Charles T. Kincaid Jan 1979

A Mathematical Hydrodynamic Circulation Model Of Great Salt Lake For Resource Management, Gary Z. Watters, Charles T. Kincaid

Reports

In the Great Basin region of this country, the resource which has always been of great importance is water. In Utah, the proper management of the resources of Great Salt Lake and the watersheds tributary to it, has become a topic of increasing concern. Recently, much emphasis has been placed on developing the recreational and industrial resources of Great Salt Lake. For optimum economic and social benefits from future development plans, the lake and its tributary watersheds need to be considered in terms of a single entity. In this regard, the Utah Water Research Laboratory (UWRL) has conducted several studies …

Studies On Viruses In Water, Rex S. Spendlove, Bill B. Barnett, Dennis B. George, Dennis J. Adams, Stanley F. Hayes, Ronald B. Dean, David Ridinger, Darwin L. Sorensen Jan 1979

Studies On Viruses In Water, Rex S. Spendlove, Bill B. Barnett, Dennis B. George, Dennis J. Adams, Stanley F. Hayes, Ronald B. Dean, David Ridinger, Darwin L. Sorensen

Reports

A new procedure for the detection of viral antigens in fecal material was developed. The test is performed by first diluting a fecal sample with phosphate buffered saline to give a liquid consistency. The pH is then adjusted to 8.5-9.0 and the solids are allowed to settle for five minutes. Supernatant fluid from above the fecal sediment is placed on the upper surface of a well of an inverted Immulon microtiter plate and incubated for one hour at 37 degrees C to allow virus to adsorb to the plastic. The Immulon plate is then washed three times with a Tween …

Cyclic Pressure Tests Of Direct Tapped C-900 Pvc Pipe, Roland W. Jeppson Jan 1979

Cyclic Pressure Tests Of Direct Tapped C-900 Pvc Pipe, Roland W. Jeppson

Reports

Performance testing of direct-tapped PVC pressure pipe was conducted at the Utah Water Research Laboratory to verify and document its capabilities under cyclic pressure conditions. Twelve samples of nominal six-inch diameter, pressure class 150 PVC pipe, manufactured to satisfy the requirements of AWWA Standard C900, were obtained from Uni-Bell Member producers. Five pipe samples were tapped and fitted with ¾ inch corporation stops under a line pressure of 80 +- 5psi. Another five samples were tapped fitted with one inch corporation stops under a pressure of 150 psi. Only corporation stops complying with AWWA Standard C800 were used. The remaining …
