The Impact Of Policy Design On Willingness To Pay For Ecosystem Services From Prairie Strips, Karina Schoengold, Badri Khanal, Taro Mieno, Lisa Schulte Moore
The Impact Of Policy Design On Willingness To Pay For Ecosystem Services From Prairie Strips, Karina Schoengold, Badri Khanal, Taro Mieno, Lisa Schulte Moore
Cornhusker Economics
Ecosystem services from farmland conservation are public good benefits. The value of these benefits is primarily measured using methods that determine the willingness to pay (WTP) for those benefits. Prairie strips, a farmland conservation practice, provide ecosystem services such as improved water quality, soil health, and biodiversity (Schulte et al., 2017). The state of Iowa is a major corn producer and contributes significant amounts of nitrogen and phosphorous to the Gulf of Mexico (Alexander et al., 2008). The development of conventional agricultural systems has also resulted in a significant loss of biodiversity, including a dominant land cover of tallgrass prairie. …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
Aerosols play important roles in modulations of cloud properties and hydrological cycle by decreasing the size of cloud droplets with the increase of aerosols under the condition of fixed liquid water path, which is known as the first aerosol indirect effect or Twomey-effect or microphysical effect. Using high-quality aerosol data from surface observations and statistically decoupling the influence of meteorological factors, we show that highly loaded aerosols can counter this microphysical effect through the radiative effect to result both the decrease and increase of cloud droplet size depending on liquid water path in water clouds. The radiative effect due to …

Occurrence Characteristics And Ecological Risk Assessment Of Heavy Metals In Fly Ash Of Ningdong Energy Chemical Industry Base, Zhang Zhiguo, Tan Yuning, Hu Youbiao, Zheng Yonghong, Chen Denghong, Cai Weiqing, Li Yating, Lu Jiangwei
Coal Geology & Exploration
In order to expand the resource utilization of fly ash, research was conducted based on the fly ash of Yuanyang Lake Power Plant in the Ningdong Energy Chemical Industry Base. Specifically, the physical and chemical properties of fly ash were characterized and analyzed by means of scanning electron microscope, energy spectrum analysis and X-ray diffraction. Besides, the total amount, effective state and content in different forms of Pb, Cr, Ni, Cu, Cd and As in fly ash were determined through acid digestion, DTPA extraction and 5-step Tessier sequential extraction. In addition, the ecological risk of heavy metals in fly ash …

Distribution Characteristics Of Trace Elements In Different Density Fractions Of High-Germanium Coal From Wulantuga, Inner Mongolia, China, Duan Piaopiao, Wang Wenfeng, Ma Mengya
Coal Geology & Exploration
The exploitation and utilization of critical metals in coal measures is of great significance to alleviate the shortage of strategic mineral resources in China. In addition to the critical metal germanium (Ge), the low-rank coal from Wulantuga Coal Mine of Shengli Coalfield in Inner Mongolia, China is enriched with the toxic elements Be, F, As, Hg, Sb and W. Considering the extraction and utilization of key metals and environmental protection, the coal in the study area must be washed. As shown in the previous study, flotation is relatively good for the removal of As, Sb and W inWulantuga coal, but …

Quantitative Experimental Study On Time-Varying Characteristics Of Bleeding Of Cement-Based Grouting Materials, Zhang Runqi, Xu Bin, Yin Shangxian, Li Shuxia, Chang Yongwang, Lian Huiqing, Cao Min
Coal Geology & Exploration
Cement-based cementitious materials are the most common grouting materials for grouting engineering. This type of material has obvious water separation effect, and obtaining the quantitative formula of water separation thickness will be helpful to improve the calculation accuracy of slurry diffusion radius. By observing the water separation process of three admixtures, namely pyrophyllite powder (0%-35%), polyvinyl alcohol (0%-8%) and fly ash (0%-90%) in cement-based slurry, the water separating rate, stone formation rate, final water separation time and water separation thickness of the three admixtures were obtained. It is found that the water separation thickness of the slurry varies regularly with …

Data-Driven State Estimation For Improved Wide Area Situational Awareness In Smart Grids, Md Jakir Hossain
Data-Driven State Estimation For Improved Wide Area Situational Awareness In Smart Grids, Md Jakir Hossain
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Wide area situational awareness (WASA) in smart grids includes automatic monitoring, perception and detection of anomalies in these systems. The goal of WASA is to make smart grids aware of their physical and operational state for more effective operational decisions and control. As such, tracking the system's state or state estimation is one of the key objectives of WASA. The extensive integration of cyber elements into smart grids, such as large deployment of various monitoring and measurement devices, provides new opportunities to improve WASA. However, the tight coupling of power grids with cyber components introduces vulnerabilities to cyber and physical …
Drought‑Stricken U.S. States Have More Comprehensive Water‑Related Hazard Planning, Theresa Jedd, Kelly Smith
Drought‑Stricken U.S. States Have More Comprehensive Water‑Related Hazard Planning, Theresa Jedd, Kelly Smith
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Despite the devastating impacts of droughts, the United States lacks a national drought plan. This leaves states to address droughts in water, hazard, and stand-alone plans which are designed to reduce drought vulnerability and to prepare government, industry, and society to cope with the impacts. Yet, there is limited empirical research that evaluates the comprehensiveness of these plans, specifically in terms of whether they include preparedness and mitigation measures or triggers for action and response. To fill this gap, this study’s first aim was to establish an evaluation framework based on principles from the drought mitigation literature. The study then …
Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment For State Wildlife Areas Surrounding Humboldt Bay, Northern California, Robert M. Sullivan, Aldaron Laird, Brian Powell, Jeffrey K. Anderson
Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment For State Wildlife Areas Surrounding Humboldt Bay, Northern California, Robert M. Sullivan, Aldaron Laird, Brian Powell, Jeffrey K. Anderson
Local Reports and Publications
Humboldt Bay has the highest rate of sea level rise (SLR) in California (47.2 cm/century). Due to compaction and tectonic subsidence, former tidelands and pastures behind dikes surrounding Humboldt Bay are lower in elevation than bay waters at high tide. Adaptation to future climate change and SLR requires that resource managers understand vulnerability and risk to each wildlife area at a local level, because adaptation to SLR is a risk-based management strategy against an uncertain future requiring site-specific solutions. We conducted a vulnerability assessment of the shoreline of three State wildlife areas surrounding Humboldt Bay: Elk River (ERWA), Fay Slough …

Climate Change Curricula In Alberta, Canada: An Intersectional Framing Analysis, Greg Lowan-Trudeau
Climate Change Curricula In Alberta, Canada: An Intersectional Framing Analysis, Greg Lowan-Trudeau
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
This article is comprised of a climate change-focused framing analysis of proposed revisions to Alberta, Canada’s K-6 curriculum as an ideologically motivated manifestation of curricular epistemicide. Eisner’s three curricula—the explicit, implicit, and null—and scholarship related to intersectional climate and environmental justice, education, and communication provide the theoretical framework. This inquiry concludes with a critical discussion of and possible alternatives to the revised curriculum with further consideration of the implications for those involved with similar endeavours in other jurisdictions across Canada and around the world.

Cities face intersectional challenges implementing climate adaptation policy. This research contributes to scholarship dedicated to understanding how policy implementation affects socially vulnerable groups, with the overarching goal of promoting justice and equity in climate policy implementation. We apply a novel framework that integrates social justice theory and the advocacy coalition framework to incrementally assess just climate adaptation in Boston, Massachusetts in the United States. Boston made an ambitious commitment to address equity as part of its climate planning and implementation efforts. In this paper, we evaluate the first implementation stage over the period 2016–2019 during which Boston developed coastal resilience …
