From Space To The Streets: Leveraging Satellite Data For Air Pollution, Health, And Justice, Gaige Kerr Mar 2023

From Space To The Streets: Leveraging Satellite Data For Air Pollution, Health, And Justice, Gaige Kerr

Sustainability Seminar Series

Ambient air disproportionately affects marginalized and minoritized communities in the United States. Satellite remote sensing provides crucial data needed to assess air pollution at a high spatial resolution and further understand the drivers, extent, and impacts of this form of environmental injustice. I provide a few vignettes to highlight how recent advances in remote sensing can inform and improve our understanding of environment health. First, satellite measurements and datasets that incorporate satellite data demonstrate the inequitable distribution of traffic-related pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter and how disparities have changed during recent years, including during the COVID-19 …

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Harmful Algal Blooms are a collection of algae in a body of water that can cause serious environmental issues and health problems in both people and aquatic organisms. Dinoflagellates are microscopic, unicellular, and eukaryotic organisms that are well known for forming harmful algal blooms because of eutrophication. Coastal Virginia suffers from HABs in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. A common species of dinoflagellate, known as Margalefidinium polykrikoides exists in the Chesapeake Bay. The purpose of this study is to determine if sediment resuspension produced by wind generated surface gravity waves cause cysts (dinoflagellate resting stages) to be suspended into …

Assessment Of Air Pollution Levels During Sugarcane Stubble Burning Event In La Feria, South Texas, Usa, Sai Deepak Pinakana, Edward Robles, Esmeralda Mendez, Amit U. Raysoni

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Agricultural stubble burning is the third largest source of air pollution after vehicular and industrial emissions. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and black carbon (BC) are some of the pollutants emitted during such burning events. The Lower Rio Grande Valley (RGV) region of South Texas is a major hub of agricultural activity, and sugarcane farming is one of them. Unfortunately, this activity results in episodic events of high air pollution in this low-resourced, Hispanic/Latino majority region of the U.S.–Mexico border. This study presents results from a sugarcane site in La Feria, …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Baldcypresss (Taxodium distichum (L.) Rich.) forests are crucial to the Southeast coastal region for the trees’ ecosystem services. Many organizations have been trying to restore the ghost and dead forests found throughout the Gulf region through restoration events. Baldcypress seedlings and saplings face several abiotic and biotic stressors, including but not limited to elevated levels of salinity, nutrients, temperature, and light intensity. These stressors can be the limiting factor in the success or failure of these massive planting efforts.

To assess which stressors were of most concern to the restoration efforts, we conducted common garden experiments with baldcypress seedlings …

The mathematical study known as queueing theory has recently become a major point of interest for many government agencies and private companies for increasing efficiency. One such application is vehicle queueing at an international port-of-entry (POE). When queueing, fumes from idling vehicles negatively affect the overall health and well-being of the community, especially the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents that work at the POEs. As such, there is a need to analyze and optimize the border crossing queuing operations to minimize wait times and number of vehicles in the queue and, thus, reduce the vehicle emissions. For this …

This paper analyzes the end uses—food, feed, fiber, fuel, and exports—of biomass production in the U.S. in 1997, 2002, 2007, and 2012. They are also analyzed at the state level in 2012. Biomass production is measured as human appropriation of net primary production (HANPP), an ecological footprint measured as carbon fixed through photosynthesis, derived from data on crop, timber and grazing yields. HANPP was allocated to end uses using publicly available sources from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and internet-based sources publishing data on agricultural trade. HANPP was 717–834 megatons (MT) of carbon per year, which comprised 515–615 MT of …
