Formula To Build A Better "Rat Trap" Rodenticide, George W.J. Laidlaw Oct 1981

Formula To Build A Better "Rat Trap" Rodenticide, George W.J. Laidlaw

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

In the time that the Pesticides Division of Agriculture Canada has been evaluating rodenticides, it has become apparent that the formulated product's efficacy is dependent on the character of the inert ingredients as well as on the actual active toxicant. The type of food, its level of manufacture, the adhesive-binder, the attractants and preservatives can each affect the efficiency of the active ingredient. Currently, very serious problems have arisen because of the anticoagulant resistance and bait shyness that rodents have developed towards existing products.

Management Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs On The National Grasslands, Greg L. Schenbeck Oct 1981

Management Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs On The National Grasslands, Greg L. Schenbeck

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) occupy approximately 22,800 ha on 11 National Grasslands in the West. Prairie dog control has been implemented on 5 National Grasslands and is planned for 1 additional National Grassland. A unique prairie dog management program in the Conata Basin area of the Buffalo Gap National Grassland is highlighted in this report. Conata Basin is a major prairie dog area and attempts are being made to control prairie dogs while trying to maintain habitat for the black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes). Repopulation of treated colonies has been a major and costly problem in Conata Basin, and it …

A Vertebrate Ipm Project In Nebraska, Robert M. Timm Oct 1981

A Vertebrate Ipm Project In Nebraska, Robert M. Timm

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

An Integrated Pest Management project in Nebraska is assisting farmers, particularly pork producers, in controlling damage caused by Norway rats, house mice, house sparrows, and starlings. This extension program also provides information on control of pocket gophers in alfalfa and on rangelands. Integrated control recommendations include rodent- and bird-proof construction, limitation of food and shelter, traps, and toxicants (rodenticides and avicides). The project is attempting to gather data on economic damage, including structural damage to confinement buildings, caused by these pests. This information will be used to assist producers in deciding when to initiate control.

Prairie Dog Density And Cattle Grazing Relationships, Daniel W. Uresk, James G. Maccracken, Ardell J. Bjugstad Oct 1981

Prairie Dog Density And Cattle Grazing Relationships, Daniel W. Uresk, James G. Maccracken, Ardell J. Bjugstad

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Blacktail prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) were more abundant (P < 0.01) in areas of southwestern South Dakota heavily grazed by cattle than in areas where cattle were excluded. Results suggest that periodic exclusions or reduced cattle stocking rates, in combination with control programs, help regulate prairie dog population increase and expansion as indexed by burrow counts.

Algal Dynamics In A Cypress Stand In The Seasonally Flooded Great Dismal Swamp, Joseph A. Atchue Iii Oct 1981

Algal Dynamics In A Cypress Stand In The Seasonally Flooded Great Dismal Swamp, Joseph A. Atchue Iii

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The dynamics of epiphytic algae and phytoplankton were studied at a cypress stand in the Great Dismal Swamp, Virginia. Mean epiphytic algal biomass was 19.9 g m-2 and mean planktonic biomass was 3.4 g m-2.Nutrient concentrations in the epiphytic algae and the litter were determined. The algae had mean concentrations of 1.67% and 0.18%. They were found to immobilize as much as 0.5 g N m-2 and 0.06 g P m-2. This suggests that the algae are important as nutrient conservers. The phytoplankton were composed primarily of Bacillariophyceae. They exhibited a more or less …

Low Pressure Membrane Separation Process To Remove Heavy Metal Complexes, Dibakar Bhattacharyya, Chin-Shun Cheng Sep 1981

Low Pressure Membrane Separation Process To Remove Heavy Metal Complexes, Dibakar Bhattacharyya, Chin-Shun Cheng

KWRRI Research Reports

The overall objective of this investigation is to establish the rejection behavior of heavy metals in the presence of complexing agents, utilizing negatively charged ultrafiltration membranes. An extensive experimental investigation is conducted with Zn2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, and Cu1+ in the presence of cyanide, ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid, and oxalates, under insignificant concentration polarization condition. The rejection dependence of the heavy metals is found to be a function of feed metal concentration, metal types, complexing agent to metal feed molar ratio, pH and ionic strength. The dependence of rejection behavior of heavy metals and complexing …

Instars And Polymorphism Of Castes In Macrotermes Michaelseni (Isoptera, Macrotermitinae), B. M. Okot-Kotber

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Biometric studies and physiological investigations made it possible to propose a scheme of post-embryonic development and polymorphism in Macrotermes michaelseni. An instar hitherto undescribed has been found and designated fourth instar. This instar is comprised of female larvae which moult into major presoldiers. Minor presoldiers moult from some of the third instar female larvae which are morphologically identical to the female worker larvae. Three instars were detected in the case of both minor and major worker development. Workers and soldiers are sterile castes. Nymphs develop from first instar larvae and moult through five instars before imaginal moult. © 1981 Masson.

Land Degradation In The Fitzroy Valley Of Western Australia, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia. Rangeland Management Branch Aug 1981

Land Degradation In The Fitzroy Valley Of Western Australia, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia. Rangeland Management Branch

Resource management technical reports

The report reassesses the condition of formerly valuable grazing lands of the Fitzroy River valley frontage lands. It is hoped that the submission will promote discussion on the problems of degenerated pastoral land and increase the resolve of all concerned to take the necessary action for their restoration. The frontage lands flank the major rivers of the area, the Fitzroy, the Margaret and the Meda and their tributaries. The frontage is capable of supporting the best pastures in the Kimberley, but unwise and uncontrolled stocking has profoundly degraded and eroded the most productive parts. There are about 5,800 square kilometres …

Diagenesis Of Organic Matter In Las Vegas Bay And Bonelli Bay, Lake Mead, James W. Murray, Carolyn J. Jones, Kathy Kuivila, Jeff Sawlan Jul 1981

Diagenesis Of Organic Matter In Las Vegas Bay And Bonelli Bay, Lake Mead, James W. Murray, Carolyn J. Jones, Kathy Kuivila, Jeff Sawlan

Publications (WR)

The interstitial water chemistry of the sediments of Las Vegas Bay and Bonelli Bay in Lake Mead has been studied as part of a comprehensive water quality study of those locations. Pore water and solid phase analyses were completed from four stations in Las Vegas Bay and two stations in Bonelli Bay. At both locations the pore water compositions and organic matter diagenesis in the sediments are dominated by sulfate reduction. This major role of sulfate reduction is unusual for lake sediments and reflects the fact that SO4 is the major anion in the lake water. In addition, gypsum …

The Potential Of The Port Of New York In The Export/Domestic Coal Trade, Jane E. Mccallion May 1981

The Potential Of The Port Of New York In The Export/Domestic Coal Trade, Jane E. Mccallion

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This paper researches the potential of the Port of New York in the Export/Domestic coal trade markets. The Port is faced with short-term and long-term proposals in order to enter these markets. On a short-term basis, the Port will be able to offer an advantage to export markets because of the backlog at the traditional coal ports of Hampton Roads, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. A modest export trade can develop this way. In the domestic trade, substantial inroads can be made due to the conversion of power plants in New England to coal-fired. In the long-term, the Port is faced with the …

Lifestyle As A Determinant Of Participation Among Dispersed Forest Recreationists, John R. Butler May 1981

Lifestyle As A Determinant Of Participation Among Dispersed Forest Recreationists, John R. Butler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study assesses the usefulness of lifestyle as a determinant of outdoor recreation behavior. Two objectives of the study are: (1) develop an operationalized concept of lifestyle that is based on theory, and (2) apply this concept in a model which uses lifestyle as a variable influencing recreation behavior.

The first objective was approached through an integrative review of the literature. Lifestyle was set in context of cultural theory. The basic postulate of the proposed theory of lifestyle is: If an individual's lifestyle is similar to that of another, certain social psychological processes are similar. Therefore, their patterns of needs, …

The Rhode Island Quahogger: Candidate For The List Of Endangered Species?, James M. Korney

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

It is the hypothesis of this paper that today the livelihood of the independent Narragansett Bay quahogger is faced with two potentially dangerous threats; water pollution in upper Narragansett Bay and the prospect of an expanding aquaculture industry in the lower bay. Unless the state of Rhode Island properly interprets and enforces existing state legislation to protect the quahoggers interests, his very livelihood will be jeoprodized. This paper will examine the legal, political, economic, and environmental affects of water pollution in upper Narragansett Bay and an expanding aquaculture industry in the lower bay in their relation to the Rhode Island …

Municipal Sewage Treatment: Problems And Considerations, George R. Johnson

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The coastal areas are vital to the economic and physical well being of the United States. Virtually every facet of our way of life is related in some fashion to these coastal areas. Ocean borne transportation moves not only vast quantities of raw materials, but also many of the intermediate and final products that are then manufactured to their related market areas. Fisheries provide vast amounts of food and employment for many of our people. In addition, the coasts are a continuing source of enjoyment and recreation for millions of our citizens. Coastal waters provide much of the water necessary …

The Viability Of Imported Liquified Natural Gas As An Energy Resource, Richard L. Dick Apr 1981

The Viability Of Imported Liquified Natural Gas As An Energy Resource, Richard L. Dick

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

As the United States enters the 1980's, the need for secure and efficient energy sources is rapidly moving to the forefront of our foreign and domestic policies. It is apparent that our existence, as well as that of our allies, is closely tied to the ability to secure energy resources. The importation of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), by specially designed ships, from oil exporting nations to energy consuming nations has been a highly touted energy resource. United States importation of LNG is not a cost effective energy resource due to: (1) dependence on foreign sources, (2) transportation costs including "hidden" …

Decision Analysis: A Systematic Approach To Environmental Impact Assessment, Richard E. Dodson Apr 1981

Decision Analysis: A Systematic Approach To Environmental Impact Assessment, Richard E. Dodson

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The creation of the national Environmental Policy Act of 1969 was an explicit recognition by the congress for the need of a better management system to be used in environmental matters by all federal agencies. Section 102(2)(A) of the Act directs that a systematic, interdisciplinary approach be used in the planning and in the decision-making if the planned action may have an impact on the environment. While the council on Environmental Quality, which was created under the Act, has revised its regulations recently pertaining to the structure and format of Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), it has yet to articulate how …
