Inter-Provincial Spatial Coupling Of Paddy Fields In China Has Accelerated The Water Consumption, Wenguang Chen, Wencai Zhang, Ming Lei, Ruqian Zhang, Zhenting Zhao, Enyi Xie, Jing Zhao, Xiangbin Kong

I-GUIDE Forum

Rice trade has played a significant role in ensuring global rice consumption security. However, the spatial coupling of paddy fields based on rice trade can also transfer ecological environmental effects and threaten the sustainability of local systems. As the largest rice producer and consumer in the world, as well as one of the countries with the lowest per capita water resources, studying the inter-provincial rice flow in China and its water resource utilization efficiency is of great significance for ensuring national rice security and water resource security. Research has found that, China's rice consumption decreased by 11.97 Mt from 2000 …

Understanding tree transpiration variability is vital for assessing ecosystem water-use efficiency and forest health amid climate change, yet most landscape-level measurements do not differentiate individual trees. Using canopy temperature data from thermal cameras, we estimated the transpiration rates of individual trees at Harvard Forest and Niwot Ridge. PT-JPL model was used to derive latent heat flux from thermal images at the canopy-level, showing strong agreement with tower measurements (R2 = 0.70–0.96 at Niwot, 0.59–0.78 at Harvard at half-hourly to monthly scales) and daily RMSE of 33.5 W/m2 (Niwot) and 52.8 W/m2 (Harvard). Tree-level analysis revealed species-specific responses to …

Irrigation Companies And The Great Salt Lake: Managing Water In Utah Amidst Climate Change, Chloe Francis, Kendall Becker, Matt Yost, Scott Hotaling

All Current Publications

The Great Salt Lake, a key ecosystem and major component of Utah’s identity and economy, is threatened by rapidly declining water levels. This problem has caused widespread and ongoing concern from the public, and the Utah Legislature is faced with making water allocation and management decisions to adapt to the state’s growing population and changing environment. One important group in this discussion is irrigation companies. Here, we examine how irrigation companies receive and maintain water rights in Utah, their significant role in water management, and recent legislative efforts to incentivize efficient water use so more water reaches the Great Salt …

Terrestrial evapotranspiration is the second-largest component of the land water cycle, linking the water, energy, and carbon cycles and influencing the productivity and health of ecosystems. The dynamics of ET across a spectrum of spatiotemporal scales and their controls remain an active focus of research across different science disciplines. Here, we provide an overview of the current state of ET science across in situ measurements, partitioning of ET, and remote sensing, and discuss how different approaches complement one another based on their advantages and shortcomings. We aim to facilitate collaboration among a cross-disciplinary group of ET scientists to overcome the …

Building Community Resilience To Extreme Heat: Lessons Learned From Spokane, Wa Community Conversations, Anna Reed, Brian G. Henning, Marina Cortes Espinosa, Hannah Mckinley, Tania Busch Isaksen Oct 2024

Building Community Resilience To Extreme Heat: Lessons Learned From Spokane, Wa Community Conversations, Anna Reed, Brian G. Henning, Marina Cortes Espinosa, Hannah Mckinley, Tania Busch Isaksen

Climate, Water, and the Environment Research

Heat is the primary cause of weather-related mortality in the United States. The 2021 Northwest Heat Dome highlighted this susceptibility. In Washington State, 159 excess deaths were attributed to the 7-day period of unprecedented extreme heat between June 26th and July 2nd. This impact was felt even in some of the more acclimatized parts of the state, like Spokane County, where 19 heat-related deaths were reported. As climate change increases the frequency, duration, and intensity of extreme heat events, creating and sustaining heat-resilient communities has become an urgent public health priority. On 6 June 2023, Gonzaga University, in partnership with …

Integrated Treatment Of Black Wastewater Using Sedimentation, Constructed Wetland, And Nanoparticles Coagulation, Hussein I. Abdel-Shafy, Mona Mansour, Mohamed A. El-Khateeb, Yang Deng

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The aim of the present investigation was to achieve an efficient treatment for black wastewater for non-restricted reuse. The treatment included sedimentation followed by horizontal flow constructed wetland (HF-CW), and finally chemical coagulation using magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles. For the wetland, the average organic loading rate (OLR) was 42.83 biochemical oxygen demand (BOD)/m2 day and 71.30 g chemical oxygen demand (COD)/m2 day, while average surface loading rate was 0.185 m3/m2 day. The obtained results revealed that removal percentage of COD, BOD, and total suspended solids (TSS) by sedimentation followed by processing through wetlands was 80.3, 81.6, and 80%, which corresponds to …

Comprehensive Lead Exposure Vulnerability For New Jersey: Insights From A Multi-Criteria Risk Assessment And Community Impact Analysis Framework, Gift Fabolude, Charles Knoble, Anvy Vu, Danlin Yu

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Lead contamination remains a persistent and insidious threat, particularly affecting young children and vulnerable communities. This study aims to develop a comprehensive sources-based lead exposure index map for New Jersey municipalities by integrating diverse lead contamination data, including lead-based paint, lead service lines, proximity to superfund and brownfield sites, road density, and gas stations, analyzing how municipality socioeconomic and land use factors impact lead exposure. The research employs Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to create two distinct multi-criteria lead exposure indices. The indices are mapped to understand the spatial distribution and magnitude of lead exposure risks …

Conducting Structure-From-Motion (Sfm) Modeling Of Freshwater Environments Using Unpiloted Aerial Systems (Uas): Challenges And Lessons Learned, Benjamin T. Fraser, Christine L. Bunyon, Russell G. Congalton Oct 2024

Conducting Structure-From-Motion (Sfm) Modeling Of Freshwater Environments Using Unpiloted Aerial Systems (Uas): Challenges And Lessons Learned, Benjamin T. Fraser, Christine L. Bunyon, Russell G. Congalton

Faculty Publications

The pairing of Unpiloted Aerial Systems (UAS) and Structure from Motion (SfM) has provided new capabilities for modeling freshwater environments. Applications of UAS-SfM range from water quality monitoring to the mapping of aquatic vegetation. The models produced provide users with the ability to analyze features at ultra-high-resolutions and across scales not easily achieved through in situ sampling. Despite the demonstrated benefits of UAS-SfM in freshwater and other natural resource disciplines, there remain fundamental technical challenges in the modeling of environments with homogenous surfaces (e.g., water). In this research, the effectiveness of several image collection and processing approaches for the modelling …
