Investigation Of Methane Content And Sorption Properties Of Lignite Deposits, Marcin Karbownik
Investigation Of Methane Content And Sorption Properties Of Lignite Deposits, Marcin Karbownik
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Methane is one of the main greenhouse gases (GHG) affecting climate change, and proper quantification of the amount of its emissions to the atmosphere is crucial. The basic parameter for determining the potential amounts of naturally occurring methane in coal for both hard coal and lignite is the methane content. Determination of the methane content of lignite for open-pit mines is not commonly used and required as there is no possibility of its accumulation in the mine workings, as is the case for underground hard coal mines. In this article, two research areas for open-pit lignite mines were analyzed in …
Perceived And Recorded Temperature In Aircraft Cabins During 143 Flights, Matthew Nicholls, Peter Vink
Perceived And Recorded Temperature In Aircraft Cabins During 143 Flights, Matthew Nicholls, Peter Vink
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
This essay reports on the perceived and recorded temperature in aircraft cabins during 143 flights. In each flight, passengers reported their experience. They recorded temperature and humidity after boarding and one hour later. The reports show that fewer than half of the passengers perceived the temperature as “good.” Most passengers (39%) perceived it as hot, and some (17%) perceived it as cold. Comparing the temperatures with guidelines shows that 18% of the recorded temperatures in the cabin were empirically too hot and 2% empirically too cold. The differences between passengers in what they perceive as a good temperature are large, …

Sea star wasting syndrome has affected numerous species of sea star, with populations of Pycnopodia helianthoides (Brandt, 1835) left most at risk. As their populations are struggling to recover, it is important to gain a better understanding of the impacts that the multiple stressors in their habitats can have on their populations. Contaminant stressors in particular are of increasing importance, because aquatic organisms can be exposed to a dynamic range of contaminants from nearby anthropogenic activity that may affect their future recovery efforts. This study is the first to quantify the effects of contaminant stressors on the larvae of P. …

Safety Distances For Fires In Underground Hard Rock Mines, Rickard Hansen
Safety Distances For Fires In Underground Hard Rock Mines, Rickard Hansen
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Preventing the ignition of combustibles in an underground mine will be one of the decisive actions affecting the risk to mining personnel during a fire. This study focuses on the application of safety distances in underground hard rock mines, where a safety distance will ensure that the incipient heat flux upon the fuel surface will not be sufficient for ignition. No earlier study has been conducted on safety distances in underground mines, and where data from earlier fire experiments and studies were applied. Safety distances were calculated using empirical expressions, accounting for influencing parameters. It was found that safety distances …
Developmental Patterns And Formation And Evolutionary Mechanisms Of Surface Cracks Induced By The Mining Of Shallowly Buried Coal Seams, Hou Enke, Mu Jiaxin, Xie Xiaoshen, Feng Dong, Yang Lei, Li Yan, He Tao, Bao Kangguang, Chen Xiaosheng
Developmental Patterns And Formation And Evolutionary Mechanisms Of Surface Cracks Induced By The Mining Of Shallowly Buried Coal Seams, Hou Enke, Mu Jiaxin, Xie Xiaoshen, Feng Dong, Yang Lei, Li Yan, He Tao, Bao Kangguang, Chen Xiaosheng
Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective Surface cracks are recognized as one of the most common geologic hazards in coal mining areas in northern Shaanxi Province. These cracks directly cause damage to surface ecosystems. Furthermore, those penetrating fractures in the overburden act as primary channels for surface water to burst underground, threatening the safe production underground. Methods This study aims to further reveal the developmental patterns of surface cracks induced by the mining of shallowly buried coal seams and elucidate their formation and evolutionary mechanisms. To this end, this study investigated mining face 15218 and 25213 in the Hongliulin Coal Mine in northern Shaanxi. Specifically, …

Utilizing Convolutional Autoencoders For Anomaly Detection And Drill Bit Damage Assessment In Rotary Percussion Drilling, Lesego Senjoba, Hajime Ikeda, Hisatoshi Toriya, Tsuyoshi Adachi, Youhei Kawamura
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Monitoring drill bit wear during drilling improves operational efficiency. Wear in drill bits is influenced by factors related to drilling parameters and rock properties and can be categorized into types based on the cause of failure. Several studies have used machine learning to detect drill bit wear, mainly using classification models. However, these models require an extensive amount of data that includes different possible drill bit failures. This presents a challenge as acquiring data is difficult due to the scarcity of anomalies. This study introduces a novel approach utilizing convolutional autoencoders (CAE) for both anomaly detection and drill bit damage …

Prediction And Control Of Ground Vibrations Due To Blasting Activities In Aggregate Mines, Iddi Ramadhani Bulushi, Geleta Warkisa Deressa, Bhanwar Singh Choudhary
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Predicting and controlling ground vibrations from blasting is crucial for protecting structures and minimizing environmental impacts. This study investigates how explosive quantity and scaled distances affect peak particle velocity and establishes empirical equations to estimate this velocity at different distances from the blast area. The study found that the maximum charge per delay at a peak particle velocity of 10 mm/s was reduced to 13.46% as the delay timing was increased from 0 to 25 ms and 9.99% from 0 to 50 ms delay timing. The reduction of maximum charge with increasing delay timing leads to the reduction of ground …

An Inventory Of Private Well Programs Across The United States, Bethany G. Foust, Ann S. Ojeda, Jessica Curl, Eve Brantley, Stephanie R. Rogers
Journal of Extension
Private well owners comprise approximately 15% of the United States (US) population and are responsible for managing their well water. Management of domestic wells can be burdensome, requires knowledge, and is critical for maintaining clean drinking water. Management resources vary by state and the resource landscape across the US is unclear. Thus, our objective was to inventory where resources exist, while also highlighting geographic areas that may need improved resources to ensure that people have the ability to safely manage their drinking water. Results of this inventory showed that 64% of states have programs; 72% of which were Cooperative Extension.

Towards More Sustainable Oceans: A Review Of The Pressing Challenges Posed By Marine Plastic Litter, Peter Yang
Faculty Scholarship
Marine littering is a global challenge and a significant threat to a sustainable planet, requiring comprehensive and effective mechanisms to address it in a comprehensive manner. This study reports on a bibliometric analysis that has identified the extent to which the topic has been explored in the international literature, by focusing on geographical scope, the emphasis on (micro)plastic litter and on policy measures. Additionally, as a complement to the assessment of the recent literature on marine plastic litter, this study reviews some case studies, identifying some trends on how to cope with this problem. The findings underscore the imperative for …
