Institutional Arrangements For Flood Plain Management In Ontario An Analysis Of The West Ferris Flood Plain Management Study, Dan Shrubsole
Institutional Arrangements For Flood Plain Management In Ontario An Analysis Of The West Ferris Flood Plain Management Study, Dan Shrubsole
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The intent of this study is to investigate how river basin study delays could be avoided or shortened. Mitchell and Gardner (1983) identified the need for this type of research in order to make watershed planning credible. This study specifically focuses on how the institutional arrangement for flood plain management may be improved to provide more efficient and effective management, present institutional arrangement for flood plain management in Ontario. The research was divided into two phases. The first phase was a literature review pertaining to comprehensive river basin management, institutional arrangements for water management, and general planning. This review led …
The Utilization Of Wood As An Energy Resource In Ontario, Ronald Harvey Walder
The Utilization Of Wood As An Energy Resource In Ontario, Ronald Harvey Walder
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The thesis provides an introductory descriptive analysis of the utilization of wood as an energy resource in Ontario from past, present, and future perspectives. Available quantitative and spatial information was compiled and evaluated for each temporal component. Due to a number of factors including local resource supply inadequacies, resource competition, and technological change, wood energy experienced a rapid decline in utilization during the late 19th century. This decline continued steadily throughout the 20th century until world energy events during the 1970’s promoted a modest resurgence. In the domestic sector “serious” users, who consume wood for the majority of their home …

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 10th (1982)
Thirteen-lined ground squirrels (Spermophilus tridecemlineatus) and other small rodents damage corn (Zea mays) stands by digging and consuming planted seeds and young seedlings, particularly in reduced-tillage fields. The use of reduced-tillage systems such as ecofarming provides greater dryland crop yields, conserves moisture, reduces soil erosion and provides suitable habitat for ground-nesting birds. The habitat available in these fields also allows various species of rodents to thrive. Reduced-tillage farming is expected to increase markedly in the years ahead; thus, rodent problems will increase as well. Seed repellents offer a promising and cost-effective method of controlling rodent damage to planted corn in …

The Role Of Usda In Animal Damage Control, James E. Miller
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 10th (1982)
The impact of vertebrate animal damage on agricultural production of row crops, forests, horticulture, poultry and livestock production, other wildlife, health of humans and domestic animals, and the protection of human interests is a vital concern of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Department recognizes that it is an old and complex problem that does not lend itself to easy answers. Animal damage problems will continue to be a significant concern of USDA and will probably always be controversial, requiring intensive research, educational, regulatory, and assistance programs. The objectives of the Department are to develop and maintain viable programs in …

Through its National Waste Terminal Storage (NWTS) Program, the Department of Energy (DOE) is responsible for providing facilities to permanently dispose of high-level nuclear waste (HLW) in a manner that will ensure public health and safety and that will be environmentally acceptable. The program has placed principal emphasis on developing deep, underground repositories, with efforts targeted toward having the first facility operational between 1999 and 2006. To reach this objective, an extensive program has been developed to find sites that would be suitable for a repository. A draft National Plan for Siting High-Level Radioactive Waste Repositories, recently published by DOE …

Impacts Of Western Coal, Oil Shale, And Tar Sands Development On Aquatic Environmental Quality: A Technical Information Matrix; Volume 1 Introduction And Instructions, Jay J. Messer, Charles I. Liff, Kurt Gernerd, Frederick J. Post
Reports
Introduction: The Upper Colorado River Basin contains vast deposits of coal, oil shale, and tar sands, which could undergo extensive development should oil prices rise or an international situation restrict oil imports. Naturally, the prospect of development of these alternative fossil fuels resources has led to concern over how extraction and conversion activities will impact environmental quality. A thorough understanding of the nature and magnitude of the resulting envionemental impacts is a necessary prerequisite, if the costs and risks of such activites are to be weighed against the economic benefits. When we set out to evaluated these costs and risks, …

Utilization And Land Cover Examined In Two Blue Earth County Streams, Mark Gamm, Robert James Childs
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Examining soil mapping units of the United States Agriculture department's Soil Conservation Service for comparison with land usage In the Blue Earth River valley, this study found that seven of 56 units in the valley accounted for 76.5 percent of the study terrain. Agricultural use or non-use of the land units matched established . designations.
The Le Sueur River flows for about 40 miles within Blue Earth county of south ·central Minnesota. Land cover in the valley, as determined by stereoscopic examination of aerial photographs, shows forest on 65 percent, agriculture on 22 percent, and other cover on 13 percent …
