United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Welcome to the National Wildlife Re search Center (NWRC), the primary research facility within the Wildlife Services (WS) program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). NWRC provides scientific information on wildlife, its habitat, and its relationship to agriculture and public safety. Here at the Center and at our nine field stations, specialists conduct scientific inquiries into the problems of wildlife damage and look for solutions to these problems.
A Study On The Uptake And Voltammetric Determination Of Trace Heavy Metals In The Treated Wastewater In Abu-Dhabi Area, Salem Rashed Salem Al-Hassani
A Study On The Uptake And Voltammetric Determination Of Trace Heavy Metals In The Treated Wastewater In Abu-Dhabi Area, Salem Rashed Salem Al-Hassani
Theses
Wastewater reuse has a positive and negative environmental impacts and possibly it can have an important role to play in water resources management, as a substituent for freshwater in irrigation. However, the presence of the toxic heavy metals in domestic sewage and in industrial effluents discharge to sewers, wastewater can create unacceptable health and environmental risks. Therefore, the present work includes the determination of the toxic heavy metals in some treated wastewater samples collected from Abu-Dhabi area using polarographic and voltammetric techniques. Differential pulse polarography and anodic stripping voltammetry are well established techniques for trace determination of heavy metals content …

Development, Reproductive Capacity And Survival Of Amblyomma Variegatum And Boophilus Decoloratus In Relation To Host Resistance And Climatic Factors Under Field Conditions, G. Solomon, G. P. Kaaya
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
To determine the developmental periods, fecundity and survival of Amblyomma variegatum and Boophilus decoloratus and the effect of host resistance, a study was carried out in the field at Abemossa ranch in Ethiopia using three breeds of cattle: Arssi, Baran and Baran X Friesian crossbreed. The investigation took place between October 1991 and September 1992. The developmental periods of both tick species were recorded. The hatching periods of larvae, engorgement, larvo-nymphal and nympho-adult moulting periods during various climatic seasons in shaded and dry areas were also recorded. While the engorgement periods recorded on the animal were relatively constant for each …

National Model: Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators' Regulations, Draft - Version 3.0
Other Publications in Wildlife Management
Some people who want to become involved in nuisance wildlife control activities may not have the appropriate education or training for such endeavors. Therefore there is a need to establish a training program that will include most of the situations that control operators may encounter. This national certification model is submitted as a guide to help ensure that such training will be reasonably standardized and embrace most of the nuisance and urban problems commonly encountered.
Note: This draft document was developed by a committee of NADCA members, chaired by Clarence "Ki" Faulkner, over the past year. It is distributed as …

Biological And Management Implications Of Fire-Pathogen Interactions In The Giant Sequoia Ecosystem, Douglas D. Piirto, John R. Parmeter Jr., Fields W. Cobb Jr., Kevin L. Piper, Amy C. Workinger, William J. Otrosina
Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences
An overriding management goal for national parks is the maintenance or, where necessary, the restoration of natural ecological processes. In Sequoia-Kings Canyon and Yosemite National Parks, there is concern about the effects of fire suppression on the giant sequoia-mixed conifer forest ecosystem. The National Park Service is currently using prescribed fire management and prescribed burning as tools to reintroduce fire as a natural process. However, there are questions about the positive and negative effects of reintroducing fire in the giant sequoia-mixed conifer ecosystem. Reintroducing fire in the Sierra Nevada forests needs critical evaluation with respect to the pathogens that affect …

Breeding Ecology And Behavior Of The Hawaiian Hawk, Curtis R. Griffin, Peter W. C. Paton, Thomas S. Baskett
Breeding Ecology And Behavior Of The Hawaiian Hawk, Curtis R. Griffin, Peter W. C. Paton, Thomas S. Baskett
Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications
We studied the ecology of the endangered Hawaiian Hawk (Buteo solitarius) on the island of Hawaii for three breeding seasons. Their breeding strategy is a prime example of a K-selected species characteristic of many birds in tropical environments: clutch size was one and brood-rearing was among the longest reported for any diurnal raptor. Twenty-eight nests were found in a variety of native and exotic habitats. Incubation lasted 38 days, nestlings fledged after 59-63 days, and parents cared for fledglings for an average of 30.2 weeks, which was 2.5 to 10 times longer than similar-size temperate zone raptors. Males …

Environmental Assessment Caribou Timber Sale, United States Forest Service
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
One of the decisions made in the 1985 Bighorn National Forest Land and Resource Management Plan (Forest Plan) was that timber sale offerings would be made. The Caribou timber sale was proposed in order to implement that Forest Plan allocation decision. The selection of this sale area was based upon several factors, including: Past forest management decisions and silvicultural prescriptions; the existence of a road system, which will minimize impacts upon wildlife habitat and water quality; the opportunity to change the forested vegetation to improve, or at least maintain within the Forest Plan standard and guidelines and other legal requirements, …

Beaver Dam Wash Instream Flow Assessment, United States Bureau Of Land Management
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
This report documents findings from an instream flow assessment conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) on Beaver Dam Wash in Mohave County, Arizona. The assessment, which focused on resources located at the mouth of Beaver Dam Wash from 1991 through 1994, provides a scientific basis for relating flowdependent resources to streamflow levels. Natural resource values, methods of data collection and analysis, and flow requirements are presented in this report.

The Colorado River of the American West supports a mainstream fish community that is classified as the “Big River” fishes. Four of these fishes are listed as endangered under provisions of the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended. Three fishes (i.e., Colorado pike minnow Ptychocheilus Lucius, humpback chub Gila cypha, and bonytail G. elegans) have been listed for over 10 years, and they have recovery plans that were prepared prior to designation of critical habitats. Recently the Colorado squawfish was renamed by the American Fisheries Society and hereafter will be refered to in this document as the Colorado pike …

Invasive Plants: Changing The Landscape Of America, Federal Interagency Committee For The Management Of Noxious And Exotic Weeds, Randy G. Westbrooks
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
In the 1950s, the American public became aware that certain chemicals endanger human health and the environment. In response to this threat, new rules and regulations regarding chemical manufacture, use, and disposal were developed under state and federal law. Today, the public has a much better understanding of the chemical pollution problem and generally supports management efforts. The 1990s have brought us face to face with another serious environmental threat: The invasion of the American landscape by aggressive nonnative plants. While farmers have always fought a battle with weeds in crops, invasion of these and other formerly weed-free lands has …
