Intergenerational Practices Oral History Project, Christine Marks
Intergenerational Practices Oral History Project, Christine Marks
Open Educational Resources
In this multi-lesson segment, we developed an oral history project on intergenerational practices. We began the semester by framing writing as a conversation to emphasize the dialogical nature of all writing. To prepare students for the practice of deep listening, we discussed an excerpt from Danielle Ofri’s What Patients Say, What Doctors Hear, which highlights the role of the listener as co-creator of meaning. We also discussed the chapter “practice” from Alexis Pauline Gumbs’ Undrowned: Black Feminist Lessons from Marine Mammals, Yiyun Li’s short personal essay “Orange Crush,” and Lily LaMotte and Ann Xu’s graphic novel Measuring Up to …

Honors Theses
Exploring the social media phenomenon, TikTok, and its influence on the community, #Booktok is the newest way readers stay up to date on new books, and what to read. Is this a good thing? A bad thing? And how has this new way of consuming books influenced reading and literature?
Departure From Magical Realism: Female Agency In Latin American Post-Boom Literature, Nicole Darian Llacza Morazzani
Departure From Magical Realism: Female Agency In Latin American Post-Boom Literature, Nicole Darian Llacza Morazzani
Honors Theses
his thesis explores depictions of female agency in post-colonial Latin American literature. I highlight three primary texts: Gabriel García Márquez's (1927-2014) 1967 One Hundred Years of Solitude, a canonical magical realist novel; Isabel Allende's (1942-present) 1982 The House of Spirits, her debut novel and a multi-generational story similar to Márquez's, and Isabel Allende's 2022 Violeta, a historical novel offering an autodiegetic narrative of a woman's 100 years of life in an unnamed South American country, to analyze how female characters evolve in response to changing sociopolitical landscapes and literary movements in Latin America. My central focus is Allende's most recent …

Practically Pooh In Every Way: A Look At Disney's Effect On Winnie-The-Pooh Pre- And Post- Public Domain, Peyton Poitras
Honors Program Theses
On Jan. 1, 2022, A.A. Milne’s willy, nilly, silly old bear entered the public domain, but this paper will argue why Disney's version will most likely retain its longevity despite additional competition. Disney's franchise-ation of Winnie the Pooh has left their iteration of the bear at the forefront of audience's minds. While Disney's version retains its iconic image of the bear, however, the release of the character into the public domain will allow others to utilize the bear in new ways. Such opens the door to a new question: How should characters be treated after entering the public domain? This …

Research Bibliography For Philippine English (2008–2023), Kingsley Bolton, Priscilla T. Cruz, Isabel P. Martin
English Faculty Publications
The research bibliography presented here is intended to complement the earlier research bibliographies from Bautista on Philippine English (Bautista, 2004; Bautista & Bolton, 2008a). It includes 11 sections dealing with book-length studies of Philippine English, as well as book chapters and journal articles on such topics as code-switching, code-mixing and linguistic hybridization; critical linguistics; discourse analysis; language attitudes and intelligibility; sociolinguistic description; language policies; multilingualism and multilingual education; Philippine literature in English; Philippine English features; and summative perspectives. While the bibliography is essentially contemporary in orientation, this article also emphasizes the foundational contributions of earlier scholars in the field.
L1 Thai Learners’ Sensitivity To The Form-Meaning Link Between English Negative Word Pairs Containing Un- And Dis- Prefix Variation, Natcha Limpapattana
L1 Thai Learners’ Sensitivity To The Form-Meaning Link Between English Negative Word Pairs Containing Un- And Dis- Prefix Variation, Natcha Limpapattana
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
English negative prefix variation occurs when different negative prefixes get paired with the same base, hence deriving word pairs (e.g. un/dis-armed). Amidst the blurry consensus on their meaning difference, cognitive semantics (CS), the approach to studying meaning that highlights the mind-context interaction, provides a systematic explanation. Each word is born from its own context-based conceptualization. Different prefixes highlight different facets of the same base, resulting in different meanings (Hamawand, 2009). However, due to their similar appearance (negative prefix + same base), one interesting question arises: Will L2 English learners recognize these nuanced differences? Therefore, the present study investigated L1 Thai …
Linear Distance, Agreement Attraction, And Working Memory Effects On L1 Thai Learners' Processing Of L2 English Third-Person Singular Subject-Verb Agreement, Montira Berteau
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In the realm of second language (L2) processing, agreement processing has continued to attract a considerable amount of attention in the field (e.g., Jiang, 2004; Keating, 2009; Lim & Christianson, 2015). A wide range of factors have been speculated to modulate L2 agreement processing, including first-language (L1) influence, L2 proficiency, long-distance agreement/dependencies (LDDs), agreement attraction, working memory (WM), among others. The present study was carried out to investigate three of these modulating factors, including long-distance agreement, agreement attraction, and WM capacity, on L2 agreement processing of L1 Thai learners. According to Hypothesis 1, linear distance would increase a level of …
Power Dynamics And Oppression: Analyzing Structural Control In Suzanne Collins’S The Hunger Games, Hannah Micciolo
Power Dynamics And Oppression: Analyzing Structural Control In Suzanne Collins’S The Hunger Games, Hannah Micciolo
Capstone Showcase
The Hunger Games is a popular novel universe that describes a totalitarian dictatorship through the lens of the oppressed. Through the book, the viewer is given insight into how Panem operates the way it does even though the majority of its citizens are oppressed by the minority in a much more obvious manner. However, within modern society, the tactics used by the oppressors are much more ambiguous and distorted. This essay will explore the structures put in place by the Capitol in tandem with modern examples to mirror each other and increase awareness of the the tactics governments use both …

"Her Best Teacher, Comforter, And Friend": The Gendered Politics Of Labor In Louisa May Alcott's Work: A Story Of Experience, Mena Bova
Scripps Senior Theses
"I only ask for a chance to be a useful, happy woman," exclaims main character Christie Devon in the opening pages of Louisa May Alcott's Work: A Story of Experience. Unsurprisingly, much of Work is focused on labor: over the book's span of twenty years, Christie participates in many forms of work, from waged labor to domestic labor to religious labor. While much of the existing scholarship about Work focuses on Christie's experiences in the world of external, waged labor, this thesis contends that Christie's experiences with domestic labor has been a historically overlooked area. Using a social reproduction …
Living In A Land East Of Eden: Non-Teleological Thinking And Steinbeck's Last Theory Of Man, Erika Schwerdfeger
Living In A Land East Of Eden: Non-Teleological Thinking And Steinbeck's Last Theory Of Man, Erika Schwerdfeger
Scripps Senior Theses
This essay undertakes a critical reevaluation of John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel East of Eden, the author’s longest, most ambitious and potentially most misunderstood work of fiction. Drawing on excerpts from the eclectic nonfiction volume The Log from the Sea of Cortez, as well as the writer’s personal correspondence and journal entries, this thesis traces the influence of what Steinbeck called “non-teleological thinking” on this novel and on its peculiar brand of humanism, natural philosophy, religiosity and morality. East of Eden is best understood in light of Steinbeck’s abiding interest in and commitment to the natural sciences, particularly marine biology, and …
Increasing Reading Fluency In Ell Learners, Jennifer N. Patton
Increasing Reading Fluency In Ell Learners, Jennifer N. Patton
Graduate Research Papers
I am creating a project on how to effectively teach fluency to ELL students. To do so, I had to first research. Recent researches have revealed that English Language Learners (ELLs) face certain challenges that threaten their academic success, especially their reading fluency, and as a result, make learning difficult. To achieve the purpose of this research, this chapter is focused on providing a deeper analysis into the problem of fluency and how it affects ELLs. The target with this is to review shared knowledge around reading fluency development in ELLs. This chapter, therefore, entails reviews of the literature on …
Gender Wobbles But It Don’T Fall Down: Feste And The Instability Of Gender In Twelfth Night, Evangeline Thurston Wilder
Gender Wobbles But It Don’T Fall Down: Feste And The Instability Of Gender In Twelfth Night, Evangeline Thurston Wilder
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night appears to some readers as a conservative story of gender-bending, in which all is made “right” in the end. The central character, Viola, disguises herself as Cesario in order to survive. In the final scenes of the play, this character reveals herself to have been a woman all along, and immediately enters a cis-heterosexual marriage with the Duke Orsino. To other readers, the play appears to be an early depiction of what we might now call transmasculinity. In this view, the central character is not just dressing up as a man to survive; he really is Cesario. …

Disability Untheorized: Critiques Of Eugenics, Then And Now, Maren Linett
Disability Untheorized: Critiques Of Eugenics, Then And Now, Maren Linett
Department of English Faculty Publications
Critiques of Anglo-American eugenics from the turn of the twentieth century through today demonstrate that the people swept up by the colossal eugenic broom were not biologically “unfit” without questioning either the notion of biological inferiority itself or the “menace” eugenicists saw in disability. They therefore imply that what was wrong with eugenics was its inaccuracy—that it was only ethically problematic because it did not correctly identify “unfit” people. Such critiques, while offering social models of race, poverty, criminality, and/or gender, leave disability untheorized and neglect the rights of disabled people.
