The decline of the professional theatre in Wisconsin, and in this country as a whole, has brought with it the rise of what is known as the Little Theatre Movement. This decline of the professional theatre has been brought about by the distraction of modern life, the cost of railroad transportation as it affects traveling companies and especially the diversion of the masses to the motion pictures. In approaching the subject of Coleridge's Revolutionary Philosophy, one finds that the scope of the problem necessitates dividing it into different periods. This division is made not for the purpose of classifying Coleridge's ideals within set limitations, but of viewing his philosophy from varying perspectives. Throughout his life, regardless of age, he was a disciple of Liberty. His pursuit of this ideal furnishes the continuity that we seek throughout his political philosophy.

Coleridge is generally recognized as a highly imaginative poet. Students are too prone therefore to regard his poetry as directly the product of his active imagination. It is the object of this study to show instead that his poetry is based largely upon his actual experiences. I have attempted to demonstrate this fact by giving supply the facts of Coleridge's life, as fully in detail as I have been able to ascertain them, and by correlating them with certain references and materials in his poems. Every American knows some of Stephen Collins Foster's songs, but not everyone who sings My Old Kentucky Home and Old Folks at Home realizes that it was he who wrote those songs. Of the two hundred songs and compositions which Foster published, at least fifteen are constantly sung. Since these songs voice emotions which are fundamental to mankind, they have become more important than the composer himself. For this reason they may be called folk-songs, and because they voice so truly the spirit of America, America is proud to claim them as her own.

It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the anti-romantic attitudes of Jane Austen. Her novels are realistic, almost wholly free of the element of Romanticism which claimed so large a part of the literature of the period (late eighteenth and early nineteenth century). It is obvious at the first casual reading of Jane Austen that, although she lived during the period of the great Romantic movement and was writing Northanger Abbey at the same time that Wordsworth was writing "Preface to the Lyrical Ballads," there is no suggestion that she knew or cared to know the impulse that …

The term, Negro poetry, has several interpretations. In its most general sense, the one in which it is used in this paper, it means poetry written by Negroes on any subject. Probably no other period in American history has been more productive of romance, strife, bravery, aggressiveness, and conflicting ideas of thought than the period from 1850 to 1865.

One who was fortunate enough to be born in the early years of that period, would have been old enough by 1865 for those various experiences to have branded his future life. Young E. Allison was so fortunate. He was born in Henderson, Kentucky, on December 23, 1853 and was named after his father, who was county judge and county clerk.

The purpose of this thesis is to make a study of the pioneer theatre in the early days of Kentucky with emphasis laid on theatrical life in Lexington, Frankfort and Louisville. The end of the first half of the nineteenth century marks the approximate close of the period studied. Theatrical activity first thrived in Lexington and Frankfort, but soon Louisville became the most important scene of dramatic performances and more attention is given the latter city in this study.
