In this thesis I have given summaries and characterizations of the women characters in Eugene Gladstone O' Neill's plays of more than one act in the order of their writing. At the close of the summarizations and characterizations of the individual plays I have attempted to classify the women characters according to their personality types and their moral traits. All the plays with the exception of six, Bread and Butter, Servitude, Second Engineer or The Personal Equation, Now I Ask You, Ancient Mariner, and S.S. Glencairn are included in this study. In my thesis, I wish to present the story of my maternal grandmother as it is revealed in the lives of her thirteen children. I have been interested in the story since I can remember. My earliest memories are of sitting on Grandma’s lap and listening to tales of Indians on the warpath, of Kansas prairie sod houses and rattlesnakes, and of what my aunts, uncles, and my mother used to do when they were small. Somewhere is most general histories and outlines of English literature, the greatness of the King James Bible and its influence on all of English literature since 1611 have been pointed out. Unquestionably, all men of letters in the English language since that time have known of the King James Bible; and many of them may have been decidedly influenced by its tradition of cadenced prose and its prose figures.

It is the purpose of this thesis to discuss the Bronte juvenilia only in reference to the mature works and to make clear what influences and likenesses there are between the two, and what currents of continuity exist from the childhood writing through the adult accomplisbment. In such an inquiry Charlotte Bronte, of course, provides the richest reward. For only hers and Branwell's juvenile writings remain to us, and of these two only she wrote significantly with a mature purpose.
