A Statistical Study Of The Contributions Of Certain Greek And Roman Mythological Terms To The Modern English Language, Chrysta Richards

Many teachers of English are challenged with the question, "Why do we study these ancient myths?" The most obvious justification is the great contribution of mythology to music, literature, and other arts. However, the modern, questioning student is not entirely satisfied with this answer. A more practical appeal is made in this study of the contributions of mythology to modern language.

During the last half of the nineteenth century, novels, short stories, articles and poems written by John William De Forest appeared in the pages of such popular magazines as Harper's, The Atlantic Monthly, and The Galaxy, along with literary contributions from Mark Twain, Whittier, Longfellow. Henry James. and William Dean Howells. The modern scholar attempting any detailed analysis of imagery in the poetry of Shakespeare may well proceed with caution. The lack of a clear and definite statement of terms, the unwillingness to come first to grips with the problem of definition before proceeding with that of analysis may produce pitfalls for the unwary; and although modern studies - especially those of Miss Caroline Spurgeon and her followers - have cast much light upon Shakespeare’s use of imagery, they do not altogether escape the charge of carelessness.

Thomas Wolfe's literary output includes four long novels and a vast number of short stories and poems. In addition to this he left a great deal of manuscript which is still in the process of being examined and assorted. His four long novels have drawn the greatest attention, for it is in these that he has done his finest and most provocative work. In each one Wolfe is the central figure, and through his eyes we are allowed to see the world as he saw it.
