Any work of art, by definition, is so designated because it speaks to all generations, irrespective of time or place, and regardless of artistic, political, economic, or ideological fads. To accept a work as art with anything less than these universalities is blind acceptance and pure idolatry. Each generation must determine the validity of the label art by determining the relevance of the work to its own generations. Unless a work of art can successfully meet such a test, the label is no more than a gentleman's agreement among self-designated arbiters of taste. Two recent critics, writing on the philosophy …

Two things essential for the development of experimental science are the cooperation of many workers and the keeping of careful records of their work. A major problem for the experimental scientists of the seventeenth century was the lack of both cooperative effort and systematic records. The scientific work early in this century was scattered, intermittent, and recorded, if at all, haphazardly. The purpose of this paper is to show how Henry Oldenburg, during his first five years as secretary to the Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge, developed patterns of communication which brought the experimental philosophers together to …

The problem with which the dissertation deals is this: does the Journal offer a possible alternative to the conventional novel form in the twentieth century literature. The problem entails a study of the process by which a form meant for purely private uses becomes, through successive steps, a public form of art. The procedure employed involves keeping distinct six different types of Journal. The first and second chapters deal with the problems of making discriminations between these six different types. Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) published six novels in the 1870’s: Desperate Remedies (1871); Under the Greenwood Tree (1872); A Pair of Blue Eyes (1873); Far from the Madding Crowd (1874); The Hand of Ethelberta (1876); The Return of the Native (1878). Musical metaphor so permeates the poems of George Herbert's The Temple that no critic can afford to ignore it; yet no one has thus far attempted a full-length study of the relationships between music in the late Renaissance and The Temple. This dissertation proposes to fill this gap in Herbert criticism by presenting three aspects of the musical milieu which shaped the poet's esthetic: first, the tools of the artist; second, the parallels between Herbert’s poetry and affective music; and, third, the use of dialogue in music and in The Temple. A study of Johnson's part in the Swiftian tradition begins with his Life of Swift, because his portrayal of Swift's life and work indicates the extent he is able to accept the permanence of Swift's work. His picture of Swift is not damaging as many believe. Johnson made use of earlier eighteenth-century biographical sketches, such as those written by Orrery, Delany, Pilkington, and Hawkesworth. In his synthesis of the early sketches, Hawkesworth is objective, sympathetic, and often close to Johnson's own style and sentiments. Previous studies of Paradise Lost and The State of Innocence have been concerned primarily with the question of rhyme and blank verse. Although the difference in versification is important, there are other areas of comparison which might also be profitably studied. The purpose of this paper is to examine the plots, characterization, and themes of these two works and to suggest several reasons for Dryden’s innovations. The plot of Dryden’s opera consists of incidents similar to those found in the epic. Dryden arranges his material in strict chronological order, discarding the “in media res” technique of Milton.
