This thesis is devoted primarily to examining existential factors present in Three Soldiers and The Naked and the Dead, but it is evident that naturalism and Marxism make their presence known in both novels. Three Soldiers and The Naked and the Dead suggest through their existential overtones that indeed existentialism is a vital force which is clearly exerting itself in twentieth-century literature.

Ian Watt, in his The Rise of the Novel, has stated that, as a writer of fictions, “[Daniel] Defoe created his own personal genre, which stands wholly alone in the history of literature ….” He has assigned Defoe this distinction, it seems, to preserve for Defoe some stature in the history of the novel, for the primary aim of his discussion of Defoe’s art is to show that Defoe did not succeed in writing a novel as the genre is now defined. The Huntsville Literary Association was founded in 1967 to provide a community for writers, readers, and artists through workshops, readings, and educational programs. One of their key contributions is the literary magazine titled POEM which showcases original writings from both established and emerging writers. This issue highlights the work of Jane Ferrell Gibson and Patrick Gratton. It also uses "Lord Byron shaking the dust of England from his shoes," by Max Beerbohm as its cover art.

The following thesis is a critical study of seven sig­ nificant Victorian pessimistic poets. Having as its basis a seminar paper for Dr. Lewis F. Ball in which four of the Victorian pessimists were discussed, the original study was expanded in order to include the remaining three.

In this critical study, the emphasis has been placed mainly upon the themes characteristic of these pessimistic poets, and the poems that I consider to be the best examples of their various attitudes have been incorporated, either partially or in full, into the text of this thesis. This exclusive pastime was characterized by gorgeous costumes, ingenious sets, imaginative scenery, music, dialogue, and dancing. Dancing was the most important element. It is said that "from the beginning to the end of its history, the essence of the masque was the arrival of certain persons visored and disguised to dance a dance or present an offering," often in the form of a compliment to the monarch. In Lillian Ross’s well known profile of Hemingway, he employed boxing terminoogy to describe his relationship to certain other writers. “I started out very quiet and I beat Mr. Turgenev. Achieving insight through the understanding of a metaphor is not a process of losing one's subjectivity, ego, or selfhood, but is the uniting of that subjectivity, ego, or selfhood with what was thought to be, without insight, an external object.
