The Isolated Individual In Selected Short Stories Of Katherine Mansfield, Barbara Norris Corson Jan 1970

The Isolated Individual In Selected Short Stories Of Katherine Mansfield, Barbara Norris Corson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study is to approach Katherine Mansfield's work from a thematic point of view, The scope of her themes is actually quite limited, and all are related in some way to the isolation of the individual, Almost all of her eighty-eight stories can be placed in one or another of three categories, all of which deal with this basic idea, One group shows the isolation of individual members within what appears to be a close-knit family, The second group deals with the woman who isolated from the man with whom she should have a meaningful relationship, usually …

An Analysis Of The Marxist Sympathies Of James Farrell As Seen In The Studs Lonigan Trilogy, Carol Richards Durbala

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The years immediately preceding the depression, as well as the depression years, produced an abundance of famous writers. Typically the sensitivity of the creative man led him to feel every pang of hunger, every breath of cold. He was oppressed by poverty when prosperity was flourishing. He cried in rage as big business came into vogue. He despaired at the extreme contrasts existing across the country. When the Marxists of the day took up arms against these problems, the writer armed himself with his most effective weapon -- the pen. Then, as now, the news was colored by the men …

The Church In The Dramas Of T. S. Eliot, Rebecca Ellen Dunn Jan 1970

The Church In The Dramas Of T. S. Eliot, Rebecca Ellen Dunn

All Master's Theses

From the desolation of a sterile Waste Land populated by straw men, Eliot's dramas increasingly portray a world of great meaning and hope. His early dramas portray a hostile and insensible world which must be fought and completely rejected by religious persons who are called to martyrdom and sainthood. Eliot's acceptance of the material world and comfort with its society brings a steady transformation of his spiritual vision when at the end of his dramas the world is one of common people who strive to find meaning and "make the best of a bad job," illumined by a vision of …

The Ironic Dimension In Hawthorne's Short Fiction, Isidore H. Becker Dec 1969

The Ironic Dimension In Hawthorne's Short Fiction, Isidore H. Becker

English Language and Literature ETDs

While Nathaniel Hawthorne's tragic vision has been treated in depth in contemporary critical literature, his comic vision has received scant attention. One result of this trend has been to under-rate Hawthorne as a comic writer. Yet an analysis of his short fiction, both tales and sketches, reveals that Hawthorne was not deficient in the comic mode of writing. This dissertation takes up the problem of assessing Hawthorne as a comic writer, mainly from the point of view of irony. The ironic dimension, however, does not exclude tragedy; hence the area of investigation is not limited to the comic alone. In …
