On The Road With The Philosopher And The Profiteer: A Study Of Hugh Henry Brackenridge's Modern Chivalry, Wendy Martin Jan 1971

On The Road With The Philosopher And The Profiteer: A Study Of Hugh Henry Brackenridge's Modern Chivalry, Wendy Martin

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

MODERN CHIVALRY, the first distinctively American novel, was written in installments in 1792-18151 by Hugh Henry Brackenridge, Princeton graduate and frontier lawyer. In addition to providing extensive commentary on the political differences of the Jeffersonians and Hamiltonians, the novel attempted to establish an apolitical value system for the new democracy which was based on philosophical reflection rather than existing social precedence. Brackenridge's concern with independent thinking in Modern Chivalry foreshadows the themes of artistic isolation, subjectivity, and alienation which preoccupy many nineteenth- and twentieth-century American novelists.

An Analysis Of The Life And Works Of Charles Lamb, Donna Goettsch Jan 1971

An Analysis Of The Life And Works Of Charles Lamb, Donna Goettsch

Graduate Research Papers

Charles Lamb was an essayist held in the highest esteem in the English literary world. He was a man small in stature and fragile in appearance, but strong in character and quick of wit. Colleagues often described him as a shy, gentle man. lamb himself did not like to be depicted as a gentle person, because to him it held Shakespeare's connotation of the word poor spirited. This Lamb definitely was not. When he was among friends, his humor was witty, and puns rolled from his lips the instant they formulated in his mind. He loved life and had no …

Three Illustrators: William Blake, George Cruikshank And Maurice Sendak, Patricia Twait Jan 1971

Three Illustrators: William Blake, George Cruikshank And Maurice Sendak, Patricia Twait

Graduate Research Papers

Children's books have been a source of delight to them; they have evoked both tears and laughter from young audiences. The illustrator has come to be a partner in the creation of hooks for children. The term children's literature now includes the efforts of both illustrators and authors. It was not always so. For many years children read adult books because there was no such thing as a storybook for children. When they came, the books for children were dull fare. They were moralizing with few, if any, illustrations.

Gradually illustrators began illustrating books specifically for children. The literary content …

A Study Of Reflectors And Reflections In Four Stories By Flannery O'Connor, William Leo Maffini Jan 1971

A Study Of Reflectors And Reflections In Four Stories By Flannery O'Connor, William Leo Maffini

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Throughout her fiction, Flannery O' Connor uses character reflections to present mirror analogues. The recurrence of these mirror analogues inspired me to look deeper into her fiction for analogues that might superficially appear to be unrelated and dissimilar. I found that in addition to her more obvious reflections there was another whole set of what I term reflectors that have the same function of pointing up traits or corresponding characteristics between characters by dwelling upon their dissimilarities. For the sake of convenience I have divided the mirror analogues in O'Connor's fiction into two categories: reflectors and reflections.

Symbol And Mood In Tennyson's Nature Poetry, Margery Moore Taylor Jan 1971

Symbol And Mood In Tennyson's Nature Poetry, Margery Moore Taylor

Master's Theses

The purpose of this paper is to show Tennyson's preoccupation with nature in his poetry, his use of her as a projector of moods and symbolism, the interrelation of landscape with depth of feeling and narrative or even simple picturesqueness. Widely celebrated as the supreme English poet and often called the Victorian Oracle, Tennyson may well be considered the best exemplar of the nineteenth century. T.S. Eliot acclaimed his poetic greatness because of his "abundance, variety, and complete competence." In addition to these positive attributes he displayed elements typical of the Victorian Age, dignity, seriousness, industrious application. More importantly, Tennyson …

The Comic Vision Of Samuel Beckett, James Ambrose Walsh Jan 1971

The Comic Vision Of Samuel Beckett, James Ambrose Walsh

Master's Theses

The twin poles of eating and excreting which he mentions point up Beckett's preoccupation with the physical over the spiritual, an interest which stands as a clue to tho understanding of his comic vision, the one element which remains constant and at the heart of his writing throughout bis career. At the center of this interest is a theory of comedy best investigated through his relationship to Henri Bergson, the French philosopher and author of Laughter, a theory of the comic. Though there is no concrete evidence of any direct influence on Beckett from Bergson, the incredible similarities in their …

Sherwood Anderson : An Experiment In Journalism, Carol Senell Ware Jan 1971

Sherwood Anderson : An Experiment In Journalism, Carol Senell Ware

Master's Theses

James Schevill in his Sherwood Anderson His Life and Work describes Anderson's plunge into journalism as "an episode unique in American newspaper history, the first time a mature writer of important stature had been completely responsible for the contents of two country papers." Although it ha s bee n generally acknowledged that Anderson's journalistic experiments are unique and make a significant contribution to the history of American journalism, these areas have never been analyzed in any detail by students of his work. This thesis will explore in depth the nature of Anderson's journalistic experiments and evaluate his achievement in the …

Semantic Constituents Of Constructions Taking That-Clauses, Robert S. Haller Jan 1971

Semantic Constituents Of Constructions Taking That-Clauses, Robert S. Haller

Department of English: Faculty Publications

What this paper has tried to do is to present some data which would have to be accounted for in an adequate semantic theory, and to suggest some of the specific elements of such a theory. A semantic theory must presuppose the existence of modal operators on every utterance, and would explain the meaning of any discourse as the relation among its medals. Logical theory has always done this, in taking every proposition of an argument as an element of the modal relations making up the argument. A semantic theory would have to specify the relations among medals which would …

Mark Twain's Study Of The Effects Of Slavery And Its Relationship To Training, Sharon Faye Nielson Jan 1971

Mark Twain's Study Of The Effects Of Slavery And Its Relationship To Training, Sharon Faye Nielson

All Master's Theses

This paper presents a study of Mark Twain's treatment of slavery, especially in relation to his theory of training. In his novels Huckleberry Finn, Puddn'head Wilson, The Prince and the Pauper, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court Twain portrays the effects of slavery and training on the personality of the slave and the slaveholder. Twain deals largely with the psychological effects of slavery, which tend to dehumanize both slave and slaveholder, deeply and permanently marking their personalities.
