Misery Of Birth And State Essays On The Tragedies Of James Shirley., Elaine Bush Kalmar Jun 1971

Misery Of Birth And State Essays On The Tragedies Of James Shirley., Elaine Bush Kalmar

English Language and Literature ETDs

Of Shirley's almost forty extant plays, five are tragedies. They can be examined fruitfully as windows to their time, as documents in the history of ideas and as literary works of art. The tragedies reveal Shirley's continuing interest in the theme of enforced marriage. That Shirley views parental and royal control of women in courtship and marriage as tragic can perhaps be explained by the unique circumstances of the Caroline years. When Shirley wrote, two puritan doctrines, election for love in marriage, and the social contract in politics, were eclipsing the medieval and Tudor notions that marriage was merely a …

Mrs. Gaskell's Industrial Novels: Mary Barton And North And South, Yvette D. Marambaud

Master's Theses

Since 1910, when Mrs. Gaskell's centenary was celebrated, few articles have been written about her. Except for her Life of Charlotte Bronte, she is not really well known in America. Few people read her tales or her short stories, and her novels are quite neglected. Yet her industrial novels, Mary Barton (1848) and North and South (1855), were very successful when they were first published. Mary Barton was an immediate success - perhaps in part because of the controversies it aroused.

Existentialism As Reflected In The Imagery Of William Styron's Work, Sally Yates Wood Jun 1971

Existentialism As Reflected In The Imagery Of William Styron's Work, Sally Yates Wood

Master's Theses

In Lie Down in Darkness, The Long March and Set This House on Fire. William Styron studies the modern condition of man and his world. Styron describes this situation according to an existential definition of existence. The world of his novels is depicted as a lonely and bleak realm where man finds no external means of support. As a result of these conditions, man flounders aimlessly. The reason for this erratic behavior is that man relies too heavily on finding guidance from the outside world. Styron contends that man will continue to stumble so miserably, until he realizes that he …

The Shifting Voice;A Study Of Robert Lowell's Poetry., Myrna Bouchey May 1971

The Shifting Voice;A Study Of Robert Lowell's Poetry., Myrna Bouchey

English Language and Literature ETDs

This; study traces the development of Robert Lowell's poetic mc1thod from Lord Weary' s Castle through Notebook 1968-69, exclusive of Lowell's translations. Through descriptive analysis, the study pays particular attention to Lowell's alteration of style as he proceeds from book to book, carrying with him the same general themes, but using a variety of voices which reflect his shifts in focus. A major portion of each chapter examines distinguishing stylistic devices that either remain constant in his poetry or undergo major modifications through his experiments with form and voice.

Interaction Process Analysis Of Harold Pinter's The Homecoming: Toward A Phenomenological Criticism Of Drama, Joseph Anthony Hunt May 1971

Interaction Process Analysis Of Harold Pinter's The Homecoming: Toward A Phenomenological Criticism Of Drama, Joseph Anthony Hunt

English Language and Literature ETDs

Much contemporary criticism tends to judge and interpret theater on preconceived grounds peculiar to the critic, rather than in terms of dramatic action--the play itself. In part, the critic who is responsible for clarifying the meaning of often perplexing, "open" forms of contemporary drama has been handed an impossible task, for the playwrights are apparently dedicated to a view of reality that doggedly refuses to follow a set, external pattern capable of resolution into easy meaning. An excellent example is Harold Pinter's The Homecoming, a play which has led critics to elaborate, subjective interpretations in their attempts to resolve its …

In the course of his lifetime, Collier published thirty-four of them either wholly or in part in his Extracts from the Registers of the Stationers' Company... 1557-1570 and, Vol. II, 1570-1587 (Shakespeare Society, 1848 and 1849). Eighteen others are included in his Twenty-five Old Ballads and Songs (privately printed, 1869). Interspersed among the fabrications …

A Great Debate In Poetic Theory: Brooks, Wheelwright, Crane & Olson, Janice Carrell May 1971

A Great Debate In Poetic Theory: Brooks, Wheelwright, Crane & Olson, Janice Carrell

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Elder Olson has said that at the Biblical Tower of Babel the people did not begin to talk nonsense but only what seemed like nonsense. This paper concerns an intellectual tower where important debates are held, but unfortunately the language is not a universal one; therefor, because all too often terms have evolved without adequate definition, disagreement occurs where reconciliation appears impossible.

The very title of this thesis could be misleading to the reader if he considers debate in its formal sense. What is here intended is the controversy in the efforts of respected scholars to understand and establish the …

Thoreau's Argument In "Economy", William H. Hansen May 1971

Thoreau's Argument In "Economy", William H. Hansen

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In the second paragraph of Walden, Thoreau explains that he is going to give a sincere and an honest account of his life in Nature to satisfy the curiosity of his friends who have expressed a desire to know the details of his two-year adventure at Walden Pond. In the third paragraph, he say's that he is also going to write something about the bad condition of his neighbors in and around Concord. These first two statements of purpose are important not only because they indicate what the book is going to be about, but also because they represent …

The Folio Society: Handsome Books At Minimal Cost, Susan Rainey

The Courier

In 1969 the George Arents Research Library at Syracuse University acquired the personal archives of Charles Ede, founder and designer of the Folio Society of England. The archives include all the books published by the Society between 1947 and 1967, a complete run of the periodical The Folio and some manuscript material. The Folio Society was founded in 1947 to produce well-designed editions of classic texts at minimal cost. Its beginnings in post-war austerity determined its continued production of handsome but not over elaborate books. As the founder of the Society said, "The real challenge, we felt, was to equate …
