The Indestructible Woman In The Works Of Faulkner, Hemingway, And Steinbeck., Mimi Reisel Gladstein
The Indestructible Woman In The Works Of Faulkner, Hemingway, And Steinbeck., Mimi Reisel Gladstein
English Language and Literature ETDs
American male novelists, according to the critical commonplace, have difficulty creating fully human females. Critics indict Faulkner, Hemingway, and Steinbeck as prime examples of this deficiency. Though their works represent distinct styles, focuses, and subject matters, these three writers do have some striking similarities beyond their alleged inability to allow full humanity to their female characters. They all express a pervasive disillusionment with contemporary society and project generally pessimistic world images. However, each author has certain optimistic undertones: mankind’s ability to endure is one of them. A recurrent manifestation of this theme ls the indestructible woman.
The indestructible woman, a …

Metodes Meahta In Six Old English Poems, Mary Relihan
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This thesis, then, will attempt to show that the achievement of unity was the primary concern of the Old English poets, who aimed to use the power of poetry to teach their people how their hope for immortality might be realized under Christianity. Their concern is evident from their poetic diction and themes that have an origin in common values of mankind, from their demonstration of unity within the poems by deliberately chosen connotative language and by forms which represent a progression of thought, and from their objective presentations in dramatic and imaginative settings. Therefore, the poetry is a fusion …

Work And The Family: Themes In The Plays Of Arthur Miller, Sue Parsons
Work And The Family: Themes In The Plays Of Arthur Miller, Sue Parsons
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The study is divided into four parts, the first three having to do with the family and the last with work. The first section outlines the relationships of family members, including their attitudes toward themselves, toward each other, and toward society. The next two have to do with “Responsibility” as viewed by the family, and the need for “Stability” within the home and outside it. The final section examines the jobs held by Miller’s characters, their attitudes toward those jobs, and the extent to which an occupation helps to influence the characters and their familial relationships. A close discussion of …
Sherwood Anderson, Christopher Sergel, And Winesburg, Ohio, Frank Stoddert Johns
Sherwood Anderson, Christopher Sergel, And Winesburg, Ohio, Frank Stoddert Johns
Master's Theses
In 1936, Sherwood Anderson read a stage version of Winesburg, Ohio to his friends Roger and Christopher Sergel. For Anderson the play marked the culmination of his efforts at playwriting. He had adapted his finest collection of stories for the stage, and it would now be the responsibility of the theatre and particularly of his producer, Jasper Deeter, to see that the play succeeded. Deeter produced the play at the Hedgerow Theatre in 1937. Anderson had no doubts concerning the merits of his play.
For Christopher Sergel, however, Sherwood Anderson's reading was only a beginning. Anderson's masterpiece, he felt, had …
Patterns Of The Negative Epic Quest And Three Modern Novels By Andre Gide, Louis-Ferdinand Celine, And Malcolm Lowry, John Robert Greer
Patterns Of The Negative Epic Quest And Three Modern Novels By Andre Gide, Louis-Ferdinand Celine, And Malcolm Lowry, John Robert Greer
Master's Theses
Many critics have approached the subject of modern epic, but like E. M. W. Tillyard, they dismiss "eccentric" literature from consideration on the claim that the execution of epic requires "balance" and "objectivity." It seems unfortunate to dismiss works that--while remaining essentially negativistic and subjective in their impact-uniquely capture the spirit of their milieu and refract in a singular way a "choric" effect (to borrow Tillyard's term); that is, "the unconscious metaphysic of a group." To accommodate the inverted comparison between epic and certain individuated works by modern authors, I here attempt to define a form I call the "negative …
The Questionable Moral Value Of Major Characters In The Later Works Of Henry James, Joseph R. Fiore
The Questionable Moral Value Of Major Characters In The Later Works Of Henry James, Joseph R. Fiore
Masters Theses
Chapter I: Introduction
As human beings, when we cannot see clearly into the workings of life, we call it ambiguous--and rightly so. Judgment of our own behavior and that of others is always suspect. We have a tendency to label this person as "good" or that act as "evil," but there should always be a certain amount of uncertainty as to whether or not our perceptions and our ensuing judgments are correct. Those of us who are literature have also, by habit, come to look at literature as reflecting the same standards of right and wrong, of good and evil. …
A Comparison Of Jane Austen's Early And Late Characterization, Janet R. Moore
A Comparison Of Jane Austen's Early And Late Characterization, Janet R. Moore
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this thesis is to compare an early well-developed heroine, Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, with a late well-developed heroine, Anne Elliot in Persuasion, in Jane Austen's novels to see if there are any changes in characterization and techniques of characterization and to evaluate these techniques.
In Chapter One, I have shown that throughout the nineteenth century from the time of publication, critics commented on Jane Austen's ability to create realistic characters. Not until the twentieth century, however, was Jane Austen's work evaluated critically. Twentieth century critics agree that she was a master at character …

THE WOMEN OF BEN JONSON IN EPICOENE AND BARTHOLOMEW FAIR. This paper compares and contrasts the method variations that cause the women of Epicoene to be less interesting and more stereotyped than those of Bartholomew Fair.
Basically, in the women of Epicoene, Jonson used character types exclusively. The women were all "masculine," and remained that type throughout the play. In Bartholomew Fair, Jonson created versatility in the characters by including more information on the women through rhetorical "places," particularly the consilium or reason behind their actions. The multiplied places in the women in Bartholomew Fair, the changes in the …
Much Deceiv'd, Much Failing, Hapless Eve:Iconography And Eve In Milton's Paradise Lost., Joanne Lewis Cockelreas
Much Deceiv'd, Much Failing, Hapless Eve:Iconography And Eve In Milton's Paradise Lost., Joanne Lewis Cockelreas
English Language and Literature ETDs
Students inquiring into the literary tradition underlying Milton's Eve in Paradise Lost find ready at hand a great body of interpretive works in the writings of the Church fathers and in the imaginative literature that develops into the hexameral tradition. Present also, however, is a second great artistic tradition, namely that of the visual arts. With the development of iconographical programs from the beginning of Christian history, Eve appears frequently and variously to reflect the intE1rests and prejudices of each age. It becomes instructive, therefore, to compare the portrayal of Eve in the visual arts with Milton's depiction of Eve …
Blake's "The Mental Traveller" And The Critics, Ann B. Dunlap
Blake's "The Mental Traveller" And The Critics, Ann B. Dunlap
English Language and Literature ETDs
The problem posed by this study is that of achieving a reasonable understanding of Blake's enigmatic poem, “The Mental Traveller,” through a systematic study of the poem's critics. "The Mental Traveller” was selected for such intensive and isolated analysis because it is in many ways a microcosm of Blake's later, larger works. The method used is simply to take the twenty-seven major commentaries on the poem in chronological order, summarize and analyze them. The results of this survey produced insights into the methodology of Blakean critics as well as ideas concerning the meaning of the poem. The methods of the …

Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.: Apostle To The Disillusioned, Paul Nicholas Pavich
English Language and Literature ETDs
This dissertation deals with the role of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. as a popular literary hero. over the last ten years he has become increasingly significant, especially to the younger, college-age reader. He has branched out into other fields t notably television, the movies and the theater. This study will consider Vonnegut's total image as revealed in his novels and also in his non fiction works.
The introduction discusses the increasing attention which Vonnegut has received from both the popular …
