My Seasons, Haniel Long Jan 1977

My Seasons, Haniel Long

Ahsahta Press

Famed as a writer of prose, Haniel Long’s poetry was discovered almost twenty-one years after his death. In her introduction to this volume, his friend poet May Sarton wrote, “The tone can be wry; it can tease a little; there is often a smile hovering about as in Robert Frost, and you have to sense the smile to understand what is being said. It can be pretty tough. But the toughness is part of the music.”

The Old English Riddles Of The Exeter Book, Craig Williamson Jan 1977

The Old English Riddles Of The Exeter Book, Craig Williamson

English Literature Faculty Works

The "Exeter Book," a late tenth-century manuscript of early Old English poetry, is an anthology of religious homiletic verse, elegiac poetry, and ninety-one lyric riddles. The riddles are of particular interest to students of Old English poetry and Anglo-Saxon culture, to archeologists, anthropologists, and folklorists. This volume will supersede all earlier editions of the riddles as the text contains many new manuscript readings, and a summary is given of the scholarship on each riddle.

Ibsen And Shaw: A Comparison, Katherine Waldbauer Jan 1977

Ibsen And Shaw: A Comparison, Katherine Waldbauer

Honors Papers

It is the intention of this paper to demonstrate that, above and beyond such purely historical evidence, Shaw and Ibsen cannot and should not be classified together, or even seen as particularly similar apart from the fact that they dealt with some of the same themes, because they had in fact two completely different world-views. This difference in viewpoint also accounts in large measure for Shaw's distortion, and in some cases downright misunderstanding, of Ibsen.

In The Beginning: A New View Of Black American Etiological Tales, Daryl Cumber Dance Jan 1977

In The Beginning: A New View Of Black American Etiological Tales, Daryl Cumber Dance

English Faculty Publications

A substantial number of Black folktales may be designated as etiological "myths" in that they tend to focus on the world as it evolved and to frequently portray the role of God in explaining why the Negro is, to quote from one tale, "so messed up," why he is black, why he has big, ugly feet and hands, why his hair is kinky, and why he must remain a poor laborer in a rich society. The causes of all of these "inferior" traits of the Negro appear to be certain alleged defects in his character-his tardiness, his ignorance, his disobedience …

Characterization Of Asian Americans In Children’S Literature, June S. Talbott Jan 1977

Characterization Of Asian Americans In Children’S Literature, June S. Talbott

Graduate Research Papers

This study was designed to determine how Asian Americans have been characterized in children's fiction. The questions investigated were: (1) what are the identifiable physical, social and personality stereotypes attributed to Asian Americans, (2) how have characterizations of Asian Americans changed between the periods 1945-1965 and 1966-1976, and (3) how have Asian American authors and illustrators characterized Asian Americans as compared with non-Asian American authors and illustrators. The time periods were chosen to test the impact of the Civil Rights Movement and the growing consciousness of the importance of ethnicity.

A total of 34 books and 219 characters were analyzed. …

Howells, Marriage, And Swedenborg: The Influence Of Swedenborg's Teachings On Howells' Portrayal Of Marriage In His Novels, Nancy Danner Marlow Jan 1977

Howells, Marriage, And Swedenborg: The Influence Of Swedenborg's Teachings On Howells' Portrayal Of Marriage In His Novels, Nancy Danner Marlow

Masters Theses

Over one-half of Howells' novels are concerned with marriage and courtship. Like many other aspects of his thinking, Howells' ideas of marriage were influenced by the teachings of Emmanuel Swedenborg, an eighteenth century Swedish scientist and theologian. The bulk of Swedenborg's teachings regarding marriage are found in his The Delights of Wisdom Concerning Conjugial Love, published in 1768. Howells showed the influence of Swedenborgianism on the marriages in his novels in three major areas: the actual marriages in his novels, matters relating to marriage, and marital failures.

An important element in Swedenborgianism is the belief in marriages in heaven. …

To Be Prosecuted, Banished, And Shot : Motives, Morals, And The Modern American Hero, Anna Tuttle Villegas Jan 1977

To Be Prosecuted, Banished, And Shot : Motives, Morals, And The Modern American Hero, Anna Tuttle Villegas

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn contains three character types which serve as models for the protagonists of certain twentieth century writers. The distinguishing characteristics of Tom, Jim, and Huck reappear in the central figures of later American novels, novels dealing explicitly with the relationship between human perception and consequent behavior. The contrasting perceptions of Mark Twain's characters provide his novel with thematic tensions that, in distinct and enlarged forms, become basic interests of major twentieth century writers. The tragedy of fixed perceptions in a world of constant flux concerned William Faulkner in Absalom, Absalom! and F. Scott Fitzgerald in …

The Use, Function And Importance Of Kilgore Trout In The Novels Of Kurt Vonnegut, Junior, Rodney Drake Jan 1977

The Use, Function And Importance Of Kilgore Trout In The Novels Of Kurt Vonnegut, Junior, Rodney Drake

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

An essential trademark of Kurt Vonnegut's fiction is the constant cross-over of characters and settings. Both reappear again and again in the mythical universe Vonnegut has created. But it is Kilgore Trout that emerges as the most important and functional cross-over character that Vonnegut utilizes. He has attained this status because of his demonstrated significance in the three novels he appears in. First, as a supporting character in the novels God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater and Slaughterhouse-Five Trout becomes the central figure in Breakfast of Champions. He also is used as the key linking agent between the characters, plots and …

English Literature As A Liberal Study In Primary Teachers' Colleges., D. M. Murison

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

In 1972, in a survey of literature teaching in Victorian primary teachers' colleges, all but one had a year of compulsory adult literature. At the time, most English lecturers considered this to be essential. However, now much has changed, and literature lecturers, faced with offering courses which are no longer compulsory, have thought again.

Tales From The Tracting Book, Donna Christine Allen Ackerson Jan 1977

Tales From The Tracting Book, Donna Christine Allen Ackerson

Theses and Dissertations

My original idea for the book was to do a picturesque-type novel, with chapters that would practically be short stories in themselves. But as I got into the writing of it, I decided to pursue one main theme--Sister Harper's conflicts regarding her missionary calling--working them out to a climax and a resolution. I still intended to give the book a picturesque flavor, however, by embellishing it with digressions, sidelines, and banalities that are always a part of missionary life.

The Gospel Influences On Dickens's Art, Jan Douglas Hodge Dec 1976

The Gospel Influences On Dickens's Art, Jan Douglas Hodge

English Language and Literature ETDs

One of the most important and least regarded influences on Dickens is the New Testament. Despite his many statements of veneration for the Gospel text, the nature and depth of the Christian vision in his writing has been underestimated. Dickens, not a systematic thinker, distrusted doctrine and dogma, but appreciated profoundly both the example of the living Christ and the Gospel narratives which record His "beneficent history" and the reality of the Christian caritas community. In them he found confirmation for many of his beliefs: the essential goodness of human nature, even though "the shadows of our own desires stand …

Narnia And The North: The Symbolism Of Northernness In The Fantasies Of C.S. Lewis, Nancy-Lou Patterson

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Reacting to a description of Narnia as analogous to Southern France, argues that “for Lewis, the way to God lay through the North,” and Narnia is a Northern landscape. Discusses at length the symbolism of North and South in various mythologies, and touches on the significance of Northernness in Tolkien and Williams as well.

Little Epics: More Lively And Choleric, Nancy Conrad Martinez Dec 1976

Little Epics: More Lively And Choleric, Nancy Conrad Martinez

English Language and Literature ETDs

The number and diversity of works in the mock-heroic mode have long made meaningful discussion difficult. The mode has been and continues to be a glittering, shapeless mass, obscuring all but the brightest or best-known stars in its blur of confused origins, purposes, and relationships. Setting down useful boundaries for one variety of mockheroic, the little epic, is the purpose of this study. Represented most notably by MacFlecknoe, The Dispensary, The Rape of the Lock, and The Dunciad, the little epic constitutes a small but dazzling genre that perfects the mode and epitomizes an age.

The theory of …
