Educational, Sociocultural, And Phonological Obstacles For The Japanese Learner Of English, David Howard Waterbury
Educational, Sociocultural, And Phonological Obstacles For The Japanese Learner Of English, David Howard Waterbury
Dissertations and Theses
Every Japanese high school student studies English for at least six years. However, the results of this study, especially in speaking, are poor. In the present study, educational, sociocultural, and linguistic obstacles to learning for the Japanese student are considered.
An educational system oriented toward passing college and university entrance examinations has distorted English curriculum. Furthermore, English teachers in Japan lack proficiency in the language. The teaching staffs and materials of language schools are poorly regulated.
Concern with relative status, group identification, and loss of face acts as a deterrent to learning. For many learners the wrong type of motivation …
Conscience & Determinism: Mark Twain's Attempt To Resolve The Problem Of Man's Sense Of Moral Responsibility In A Deterministic World, R. Kathleen Raisor
Conscience & Determinism: Mark Twain's Attempt To Resolve The Problem Of Man's Sense Of Moral Responsibility In A Deterministic World, R. Kathleen Raisor
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Beneath the placid surface of books such as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, there are the seeds of a darker, yet more profound Twain than a cursory reading yields. From a point beginning about 1876 until his death in 1910, there is in Twain's major works a progressively darker, more intensely pessimistic view of the human condition, for Twain increasingly saw man as circumscribed and imprisoned by mechanistic determinism. This study provides a chronological examination of Twain's attempt to resolve the problem of man's sense of moral responsibility in a deterministic world. The development …
The Occult Tradition, Blake, & The Kabbalah: A Preliminary Study, Laura Miller
The Occult Tradition, Blake, & The Kabbalah: A Preliminary Study, Laura Miller
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study represents an attempt to explore the occult tradition, in particular the Kabbalah, in an effort to establish a relationship between this tradition and the prophetic poems of William Blake. The Kabbalah is examined to reveal similarities between the kabbalistic Adam Kadmon and Blake's sleeping giant Albion. In addition, a comparison is made of the sexual dichotomies in both sources. Once Blake is viewed as a part of the occult tradition and the kabbalistic similarities are explored, an important aspect of Blake's poetry is clarified, by considering the essential design of kabbalistic thought as it stands in close relation …

An Extension Of Mcguire's Inoculation Theory T8 Controversial Topics, Michele S. Roberts
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the extension of McGuire's inoculation theory to controversial topics. It was assumed that the employment of controversial topics would reverse the conditions described as obtaining with the employment of cultural truisms. McGuire's first study on the inoculation theory was used as a paradigm, and three hypotheses were investigated: Hypothesis One: A supportive treatment will be superior to a refutational treatment in conferring resistance to persuasion. Hypothesis Two: An active participation in developing defenses will increase the amount of immunity conferred. Hypothesis Three: There is an interactive effect between the type of defense …

Choice And Success: The Evolution Of A Modern Hero, Laurence W. Ranstead
Choice And Success: The Evolution Of A Modern Hero, Laurence W. Ranstead
Dissertations and Theses
The phenomenon of modern fantasy is the result of a tradition that originated with romance. It is a tradition that has experienced continual redefinement and utilization over the years. This is evidenced by the rediscovery of certain characteristics of the Medieval Romance and the development of others by the Romantics, William Blake, William Wordsworth, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. These characteristics are identifiable in the works of such later writers as Charles Dickens, William Morris, H.G. Wells, G.B. Shaw, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkein. The concern of these succeeding authors is the same as that of the Romantics, i.e., the nature …
Cruikshank's Fagin—The Illustrator As Creator, Sidney Wechter
Cruikshank's Fagin—The Illustrator As Creator, Sidney Wechter
The Courier
"I am the originator of Oliver Twist." So claimed George Cruikshank in a pamphlet he had published, entitled "The Artist and the Author," in 1872. Cruikshank waited until two years after Dickens's death before putting forth his claim. He also wrote that he was the originator of Harrison Ainsworth's The Miser's Daughter, The Tower of London, and other books by Ainsworth.
It has been proven beyond doubt that all these assertions are without foundation. We have learned that, starting with his first book, Sketches by Boz, for which Cruikshank did the illustrations, it was Dickens's policy first, to write a …

John Cowper Powys: The Autobiography And The Man, Walter Eden
John Cowper Powys: The Autobiography And The Man, Walter Eden
The Courier
John Cowper Powys has become an important subject of critical and scholarly attention. Many of his works have been reissued, and dissertations, essays, and books are devoted to him. Still, one suspects that outside the ranks of specialists in twentieth-century British literature, Powys remains little known. This is particularly unfortunate because he hoped that his work would speak, not to academic specialists, but to a broad general audience.
As Powys's reputation continues to grow, literary scholars will become increasingly aware of the collection of Powysiana in the George Arents Research Library for Special Collections at Syracuse University. It is one …
Unifying Principles In The English Renaissance Sonnet Sequence, Deborah Fairfield Heatwole
Unifying Principles In The English Renaissance Sonnet Sequence, Deborah Fairfield Heatwole
English Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis, the structural and thematic development of the English sonnet sequence during the years of its greatest vogue is examined in detail. The sonnet itself, as the basic unit of the structure of a sequence, is analyzed, and the various characteristics of the sequences themselves are investigated. The sequences of Sir Philip Sidney, Edmund Spenser, Samuel Daniel, and Michael Drayton are discussed in separate chapters.
The basic contention of this thesis is that, while many sonnet "cycles" are mere collections of discrete sonnets, the major sonnet writers of this period constructed sequences that are highly organized along stylistic, …
Samuel Becket's Use Of "Silence", Russell V. Watkins
Samuel Becket's Use Of "Silence", Russell V. Watkins
English Theses & Dissertations
Silence is an important aspect of modern literature. No other living writer has made more adept use of silence in his fictional works than has Samuel Beckett. In this thesis submitted in partial fulfillment for the M.A. degree in English, I provide an in-depth study of Beckett's use of silence both in his prose works and in his plays. Not only does this thesis provide an in-depth study of Beckett's use of silence, but it also provides a brief survey of how Beckets use of silence has gradually evolved in his fictional works, and comments on the significance of …

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Finds commonality between people who search for monsters such as the Loch Ness monster and those who read fantasy. Both appeal to a psychological need to redress the balance in a culture which focuses too much on rational, right-brain consciousness (based on the theories of Ornstein).

Fandom Is A Way Of Life: A Folkloristic Ethnography Of Science Fiction Fandom, David Axler
Fandom Is A Way Of Life: A Folkloristic Ethnography Of Science Fiction Fandom, David Axler
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
A science fiction (“sf”) fan is an individual whose interest in this literary genre has extended past reading into involvement in such things as local science fiction clubs, fan magazines (“fanzines”), and sf conventions (“cons”). Science fiction fandom is the loosely-structured, geographically-dispersed organization of these fans. Drawing on both written sources and field interviews with eight informants, the history, composition and structure of sf fandom is examined from a folkloristic viewpoint. The forms of folklore which serve to bind the individual fan to the larger social entity of fandom are detailed.
Despite its literary orientation, fandom is primarily a social …
