Piers The Plowman And The Building Of Truth, Rose Cothren Anstine
Piers The Plowman And The Building Of Truth, Rose Cothren Anstine
English Language and Literature ETDs
Although some of the problems that Piers the Plowman presents for the twentieth-century reader--authorship, thought, and theology--have been elucidated, the structure of William Langland's fourteenth-century poem still puzzles modern readers and critics. The continuing concern with the structure of Piers the Plowman is evidenced by the works of T. P. Dunning, D. W. Robertson and B. F. Huppe, and Mary Carruthers which have appeared over a period of about forty years. Each of these works is concerned with structure; each uses the works of Augustine as a theoretical basis, but none of the works treats structure as separate from thought. …

Composing And Using Poetry As An Esl Teaching Tool, Roland Caissie
Composing And Using Poetry As An Esl Teaching Tool, Roland Caissie
MA TESOL Collection
It is the purpose of this paper to demonstrate how poetry can be a valuable tool in the ESL classroom, the problems connected with relying on extant verse for work with ESL students, and the consequential preferability of producing one's own poetry. In addition, guidelines and suggestions are offered for creating original and goal-specific works, together with ways in which those works, once made, may be used most effectively in the ESL classroom. Also, sample works, by the author and others, as well as various exercises and a brief bibliography, are provided in an appendix, giving the reader a source …
The Development And Use Of Self-Concept Enhancement Criteria In The Analysis Of Black Biographies, Marsha Gerber
The Development And Use Of Self-Concept Enhancement Criteria In The Analysis Of Black Biographies, Marsha Gerber
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of the study was to develop a list of criteria and a checklist from which to evaluate black biographies for self concept enhancement. The author hypothesized that such a checklist could be developed and used in evaluating black biographies. The checklist criteria were developed and used to evaluate forty black biographies, fifty percent of the biographies about blacks currently on the shelves of the McKinstry Junior High School media center. In using the checklist the author judged twenty percent of the books at borderline level for self-concept enhancement and seventeen percent unacceptable. The checklist seems to be a …

Offences Against One's Self: Paederasty Part 1, Jeremy Bentham, Louis Crompton
Offences Against One's Self: Paederasty Part 1, Jeremy Bentham, Louis Crompton
Department of English: Faculty Publications
This is the first publication of Jeremy Bentham's essay on "Paederasty," written about 1785, The essay, which runs to over 60 manuscript pages, is the first known argument for homosexual law reform in England. Bentham advocates the decriminalization of sodomy, which in his day was punished by hanging. He argues that homosexual acts do not "weaken" men, or threaten population or marriage, and documents their prevalence in ancient Greece and Rome. Bentham opposes punishment on utilitarian grounds and attacks ascetic sexual morality. In the preceding article the editor's introduction discussed the essay in the light of 18th-century legal opinion and …

Structure And Characterization In Popular Adolescent Fiction, Marcia Fox
Structure And Characterization In Popular Adolescent Fiction, Marcia Fox
Graduate Research Papers
For this study the author identified two criteria to be examined in junior novels. These criteria originally came from Stephen Dunning's five categories which he suggested as representative criteria against which the literary quality of the junior novel could be measured. The two categories chosen were structure and characterization in the novel. Each aspect of these two categories was defined and then applied to twenty-one junior novels that were fiction. The twenty-one novels examined were chosen from G. Robert Carlsen's list of popular books depicting adolescent concerns in the 1977 and 1978 English Journal. Each book was then measured numerically …

A Survey Of Mormon Literary Criticism, Colin B. Douglas
Theses and Dissertations
Three general questions concerning literature have been addressed by the writers considered in this thesis: What constitutes a work of literary art? What ought to be valued by Latter-day Saints in a literary work? How should criticism be conducted by Latter-day Saints? To the first question, five basic answers have been proposed: significant form, uplifting thought content clothed in decorative form, typological symbol, ikon (as the word is used by C S lewis in An Experiment in Criticism), and capacity for helping the reader achieve a kind of "negative capability." These definitions also tend to be statements of value, …

The Hollow Of Echoes, Kathleen Danker, Felix White Sr.
Department of English: Faculty Publications
The Hollow of Echoes is the result of collaboration between Mr. Felix White, Sr. and myself. Mr. White, who resides in Winnebago, Nebraska, is knowledgeable in many areas of traditional Winnebago culture including language, history, legends and law. During the spring of 1973, he recounted to me a number of Winnebago legends of which I made recordings. I have incorporated these legends into a fictional account of a present-day Winnebago grandfather using the stories to instruct his grandchildren in traditional ways of viewing situations they encounter in their daily lives. Almost all of the views of the grandfather in the …
