Jack Van Arden, spoiled and rebellious scion of a wealthy and socially prominent Chicago family, gasps at the vision before him on his television screen. The announcer has called Miss Violet Crenshaw to accept the title of beauty queen, and rightly so--for she is beautiful in a breathtaking fashion. Incredibly, before the wispy, blond girl can accept, she is forcefully led away by a stern, forbidding man--her father. Moved by the girl's unearthly beauty, Jack determines on the spot that he will find her and make her is bride.

Conqueror Of The Dark Hills, Rufus Reed
Rufus Reed Literary Works
From the author: Here is the story of the miraculous transformation of Martin County, Kentucky, from a state of abject poverty to a rise to unparalleled prosperity. It's the story of the brave and hardy men who stuck with it, who eked out a bare living, finally passing their hardiness and heartiness to the future residents, those who got it where it is today.
Chaucer's Epic Statement And The Political Milieu Of The Late Fourteenth Century, Paul A. Olson
Chaucer's Epic Statement And The Political Milieu Of The Late Fourteenth Century, Paul A. Olson
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Sets Knight's Tale in the tradition of political verse, and argues that the tale encourages peace in the domestic and foreign affairs of Chaucer's England. The hortatory, heroic style of the tale presents Theseus as a peace-making ideal, pertinent to the French wars of the time. The juxtaposition of the Miller's Tale with the Knight's Tale encourages placid relations with the peasant class.
Several critics, both neoclassic and modern, have observed that) as to kind, the Knight's Tale is an epic fiction. Characteristically, the poems we call medieval epics are what Ezra Pound also says an epic must be in …

Madness And Sexual Politics In The Feminist Novel: Studies On Brontë, Woolf, Lessing, And Atwood, By Barbara Hill Rigney. The University Of Wisconsin Press: Madison, 1978 (Book Review), Nancy Topping Bazin
English Faculty Publications
[First Paragraph] Barbara Hill Rigney's aim in Madness and Sexual Politics in the Feminist Novel is "to reconcile feminism and psychology in the areas of literary criticism" and "to find examples in the major works of four representative feminist writers of the relationship between madness and the female condition." (p. 3). Rigney analyzes four novels, Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway, Doris Lessing's The Four-Gated City, and Margaret Atwood's Surfacing, and finds that "all depict insanity in relation to sexual politics and state that madness, to a greater or lesser degree, is connected to …

Functions Of Menace: A Comparison Of The Room And The Birthday Party, Lee R. Martin
Functions Of Menace: A Comparison Of The Room And The Birthday Party, Lee R. Martin
Masters Theses
An atmosphere of menace surrounds the action of Harold Pinter's plays, The Room and The Birthday Party. Several critics seem to agree that the menace originates in the outer world and threatens to intrude upon the security of a room, where people attempt to hide. But the menace may also originate within the room--from the inner world and not the outer. The Room illustrates how a character deals with a menace that is within, while The Birthday Party deals with agents of menace from the outer world.
Rose Hudd, in The Room, is dissociated from the outer world …
Fielding's Clergymen, Kathleen Marie Puhr
Fielding's Clergymen, Kathleen Marie Puhr
Masters Theses
Henry Fielding presented more clergymen in his fiction than any other major novelist except Trollope, and his non-fictional writings--notably articles in his journal, The Champion--also reflect his interest in the status of the clergy in eighteenth-century England. In his series of articles entitled “An Apology for the Clergy,” Fielding establishes the criteria by which he feels clergymen should be judged and lists the qualities of the “true” and “false” clergymen.
This study reveals that while Fielding in his non-fictional works clearly explains the traits of the true clergyman, his fiction does not contain a clergyman measuring up to his …
From Selflessness To Selfishness: Various Types Of Deception In Four Of Twain's Novels, Kay L. Smith
From Selflessness To Selfishness: Various Types Of Deception In Four Of Twain's Novels, Kay L. Smith
Masters Theses
An interesting feature of Mark Twain's The Prince and the Pauper, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, and The Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson is the use of disguise and deception. The basis of much of the novels' actions concerns people who, for varied reasons, set out to fool other people. Other individuals or groups of people are self-deceived.
Motivations for the deception vary. Some entail selfless concerns of protecting a loved one. Some illustrate desires to maintain one's own safety and well-being. Still others involve negative, base qualities such as greed, …

As I began to peruse collections and studies of black folklore, I found that although considerable work had been done from which I was l earning a great deal, there were some aspects of black folklore with which I was personally familiar (from my childhood in Charles City, Virginia, my college days in Petersburg, and my adult life in Richmond) that I had observed as influence in numerous literary works, particularly on temporary works, that were not included in the material was finding, or were not presented in anything even vaguely resembling the versions I knew and saw represented in …
Songs, Charley John Greasybear
Songs, Charley John Greasybear
Ahsahta Press
Songs is a collection of one Native American’s oral poetry captured on paper. A therapy client of the poet and psychologist Judson Crews, Charley John Greasybear told his poems to Crews, who wrote them down and assembled this collection. As J. Whitebird explains in the introduction, “Some of the poems speak clearly of his bonds to his native community, bonds which most of us will never have the good fortune to experience. Some of them cry of his violent and confused efforts to blend in with a homogenized America. But that is the point; Charley John sings openly of his …
The Hearkening Eye, Hildegarde Flanner
The Hearkening Eye, Hildegarde Flanner
Ahsahta Press
Hildegarde Flanner had lived in what she called the “Western Earth” for fifty years when this collection was published in 1979. She began writing in the nineteen twenties and states in her introduction, “It was not necessary to go to Paris to write poetry.” Her verse is replete with the cadences and landscape of the West. Flanner’s poetry has both urban and contemporary themes, but its main emphasis lies with Earth—cicadas, valley weeds, sassafras and Judas trees. Flanner’s imagery takes the reader beyond the surface of description. Her rhymes take a closer view that nudges the reader into the realm …

Over Desoto's Bones, Conger Beasley, Jr.
Ahsahta Press
“An adept mixture of fact, history, surrealism, and mysticism,” says Hugh Fox in his introduction to Over DeSoto’s Bones, published in 1979. The entire collection is an intelligent, ironic, and engaging look at history and its consequences in the desert west. Beasley draws together both arid landscape and cultural tradition, finding union between disparate forces on the page. “Anza Conquers the Desert” is a witty, wry seventeen-poem sequence mixing magic and history, and detailing the 1774 expedition of Captain Juan Bautista de Anza and his men traveling from San Xavier del Bac near Tucson into the Colorado desert. “Zoot …

Black Eve Or Madonna? A Study Of The Antithetical Views Of The Mother In Black American Literature, Daryl Cumber Dance
Black Eve Or Madonna? A Study Of The Antithetical Views Of The Mother In Black American Literature, Daryl Cumber Dance
English Faculty Publications
Within these two extreme views of woman - the mother who brings death and destruction versus the mother who brings life and salvation - where does the Black American mother stand? It seems to me that it would not be inappropriate to look at the literature, not as mere fiction, but rather as an interpretation and compilation of history, anthropology, sociology, psychology, and a host of other areas. Thus the true literary artist reveals life more accurately and with more insight than any historical facts and statistical details, because he deals with the truth of the human heart, with the …

Since time began, mankind has learned to cope with change as a consistent element of life. History is partly a record of man's response to changes in people, in physical circumstances, in social conditions, in moral attitudes. Change, therefore has always been an integral part of living, but in Victorian England, the changes taking place were so tremendous, so numerous and so widespread in their effect as to have a dominating influence on the work of certain authors or the period. The Victorian period, during the decades 1850 – 1870, rife with change and turbulence, saw the rise of Matthew …
