"Aunt Sue's Stories": The Use Of Folklore In The Teaching Of Literature, Daryl Cumber Dance Jan 1980

"Aunt Sue's Stories": The Use Of Folklore In The Teaching Of Literature, Daryl Cumber Dance

English Faculty Publications

This poem by Langston Hughes, one of America's most prolific poets, suggests the appeal of folklore to the young. Aunt Sue's stories inspire the response that every teacher of literature aspires to elicit from his students. I would like to suggest that the most natural thing in the world for the teacher is to capitalize on this appeal of folklore to help develop an interest in and an appreciation for recorded literature. Folklore can do much to help the student bridge the gap between his own world and what seems to many to be the alien world of Shakespeare. Our …

Selected Poems, Hazel Hall Jan 1980

Selected Poems, Hazel Hall

Ahsahta Press

Published by Ahsahta in 1980, The Selected Poems of Hazel Hall originally appeared in three published volumes: Curtains (1921), Walkers (1923), and City of Time (1928). Hall had an exceptionally short period of productivity. Born in 1886, she published her first poem at the age of thirty. Her poetry appeared in Poetry, Dial, Harper’s, Yale Review, The Nation, Literary Review, Lyric, Contemporary Verse, and Bookman before her work slipped into obscurity. Harriet Monroe, editor of Poetry, awarded Hall the Young Poet’s Prize in 1921. Hall was confined to a wheelchair from …

No Moving Parts, Susan Strayer Deal Jan 1980

No Moving Parts, Susan Strayer Deal

Ahsahta Press

Susan Strayer Deal’s language is sanded, paint-stripped, and polished to airy and remote simplicity, as though language itself must be kept spare and light to survive the Nebraska landscape from which she writes. But for all the spare language, the poems have a natural weight that keeps them earth-bound and necessary. The poems are not simply about the landscape, or the poet’s experience of it, but about how the mind and soul operate like the prairie: starkly, relentlessly. This was Deal's first collection of poetry, published in 1980 by Ahsahta Press; The Dark is a Door followed from Ahsahta in …

To The Natural World, Genevieve Taggard Jan 1980

To The Natural World, Genevieve Taggard

Ahsahta Press

Genevieve Taggard began writing verse in 1907 when she was thirteen, and went on to publish eleven books of poetry and a biography of Emily Dickinson. Taggard, who died in 1948, published poems in The Nation, The New Republic, Kenyon Review, The New Yorker, and was widely anthologized, but never published a full-length collection. To the Natural World was assembled by Taggard’s daughter, Marcia Liles, especially for the Ahsahta Modern and Contemporary Poetry of the American West series. Taggard’s American natural world spans from Washington and Hawaii to New Hampshire and Vermont. Then she whisks us …

The Development Of An Annotated Bibliography Of Historical Fiction For Use In An American History Course, Patricia Thayer Jan 1980

The Development Of An Annotated Bibliography Of Historical Fiction For Use In An American History Course, Patricia Thayer

Graduate Research Papers

Juvenile literature is an effective and appealing tool to supplement classroom instruction. More specifically, historical fiction can provide supplemental readings to enhance and enrich an American Studies Course.

The purpose of this study was to determine if an annotated bibliography of historical fiction relating to the Civil War era could be developed. The novels to be included were to be of an interest level including grade eight and a reading level range of grades four through eleven. Major social/cultural, political/legal, and economic issues of the Civil War era were attributed to each title in the bibliography.

The researcher had predicted …

Matthew Arnold And Minimum Competency: The Nineteenth-Century British Experience With National Basic Skills Assessment, Patrick G. Scott Jan 1980

Matthew Arnold And Minimum Competency: The Nineteenth-Century British Experience With National Basic Skills Assessment, Patrick G. Scott

Faculty Publications

Discusses the British government's introduction in 1861-62 of the Revised Code, under Robert Lowe, tying government funding of elementary schools to annual examination of the progress made by each child in the basic skills of Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic, and the satiric perspective on the debate given by the poet and essayist Matthew Arnold, himself one of Her Majesty's Inspectors of Schools, charged with implementing Lowe's reforms. Many of the issues about local and national curriculum, state funding of education, the importance of basic or core skills in relation to breadth, and the best means to assess teacher effectiveness have …

"Pianos In The Woods": Emily Dickinson's Imaginative Vision, Steven R. Schindler Jan 1980

"Pianos In The Woods": Emily Dickinson's Imaginative Vision, Steven R. Schindler

Honors Papers

In this emphatically skeptical poem, Emily Dickinson squarely connects with one of the central issues of romantic and modern literature: the individual's alienation from the world in which he lives. This ontological separation had its origins in modern thought in the philosophy of Descartes and Hobbes, and was invested with scientific certainty by the revelation of Newtonian physics. Materialism gave way to mechanism, and the universe was reduced to substance and motion; it was emptied of purpose and value, and was thus seen as separate from the vital world of private experience. Inheritors of this world-view, the Romantics turned to …
