The Figure Of Taliesin In Charles Williams' Arthuriad, Richard Woods
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Discusses Taliesin as a historical personage and as a legendary and mythological figure, and specifically the sources for Williams’s portrayal of Taliesin in his Arthurian poetry. Speculates on why Williams chose Taliesin as the “romantic focus” of his poems, how he conceived his role, and why he departed from traditional sources.

Rasselas & Candide: Common Links, Robert Rowe
Rasselas & Candide: Common Links, Robert Rowe
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Many critics have discovered striking similarities between Samuel Johnson's Rasselas and Voltaire's Candide. Yet, most have failed to describe the links that exist between the works which indicate that similar forces may have spurred the authors to write so similar tales, one quickly following the other into publication.
Source studies of the two tales indicate that very little, if any, evidence is available to prove that the works were inspired by the same written sources that Johnson and Voltaire may have relied upon. While source studies of the tales do not reveal any shocking information, they do inform the …

Conversion, Revisionism, And Revision In Malcolm Cowley's Exile's Return, John D. Hazlett
Conversion, Revisionism, And Revision In Malcolm Cowley's Exile's Return, John D. Hazlett
English Faculty Publications
Malcolm Cowley's first edition of 'Exile's Return: A Narrative of Ideas' (1934) was an autobiographical narrative which traced Cowley and his friends on their ideological odyssey from bohemianism to Marxism. Cowley's 'Exile's Return: A Literary Odyssey of the 1920s' (1951) was written because Cowley, like other writers of his generation, was embarrassed by his decade of Marxist enthusiasm and, coupled with a national mood increasingly hostile to Communism, he now perceived his view of history in the first book as a literary flaw. However, once that view was judged inaccurate, it was easy for Cowley to convince himself that "self" …

Hogarth And His Unholy Age, Thomas M. Curley
Hogarth And His Unholy Age, Thomas M. Curley
Bridgewater Review
Samuel Johnson, that eighteenth-century English authority on human learning and life, had a surprisingly low regard for painting. But he knew the first great British artist, William Hogarth, and publicly applauded the first art exhibitions in England. Johnson would have found an equally good reason to applaud Bridgewater State College’s Hogarth Festival in October of 1982. This exhibition of twenty-five, beautifully preserved prints was a splendid sampling of Hogarth’s artistic legacy selected from the collection owned by the Judd Family of New Jersey and on loan from Monmouth College, New Jersey through Professor Vincent DiMattio. All in all, the Hogarth …

The Search For Origins: Some Contemporary Views On Poetry And Possibility, David Franke
The Search For Origins: Some Contemporary Views On Poetry And Possibility, David Franke
Honors Theses
Too often it is the habit of critics to create a realm of philosophy that removes itself from the very subject which it aims to clarify or refine. This paper attempts to avoid that mistake by grounding the philosophical ideas explicated in the first section of the paper in practical applications to the poetry of Mark Strand, A.R. Ammons and others. Briefly, the beginning sets up an idealogical framework that focuses on the poet's introspective search for the origins of his art. Drawing heavily on the criticism of Maurice Blanchot, the phenomonological philosophy of Martin Heidegger , and the philosophical …
